Root It's been too long since I changed ROMs

Hi everyone!

Its been a while since I posted, I have been busy with life. For the past several months I have been using CM7 (it was the first and only ROM I have used since rooting my phone), I also am using a LoRD Kernel.

Anyways, I really want to try out IceColdSandwich 8.5 AOKP, but I am really unsure how I switch ROMs on an already rooted phone. I bought Titanium Backup Pro months ago, but it seems that this program is not very good from what I read on various forums, so I'm okay with not restoring any data with it. all of my phone numbers have been synced with a google account, and thats the only thing I don't want to use.

Can someone please explain to me step-by-step how to switch from CM7 to ICS 8.5? It appears that flashing ROMs on already rooted phones is common knowledge, but unfortunately I really am lost.

Thanks for any help!

forgot to mention I have a Telus Desire HD...not sure if it matters, I saw it listed in the FAQ, but the link goes to a 404 for me. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21520840&postcount=4

You flash new ROM's by installing it from a .zip file which you copy to your SD card. Am a newbie but i am on my 4th ROM. Pick a ROM, and would love to help you flash a new one. scotty85 and D-U-R-X will drop in too I think. They thought me everything I know.

- Enter recovery
- Back-up current ROM
- Verify md5sum of backup
- Full wipe
- Install new ROM

Takes about 10 minute :)

It works well for me, but I use it to restore, apps only and not apps + data.
I also use it to freeze system apps I do not use.

So, lets pick a ROM.

If you like CM, I think you will be happy with Ice Cold Sandwich 8.5. Everything works except for 720p video recording. I find it task management a bit aggressive.

If you want to give Sense a go, I am using Blackout ICS Incredible 3.0. A few minor bugs (One non-working shortcut is quick settings, FM Radio, no Dolby, no compass in Google Maps). Everything else works fine.

It's absolutely fine to restore user apps + data. If you do that everything will be like it was on your previous ROM, including a lot of apps that use logins will be logged in again automatically.

What you should not do however is restore any system apps or data (anything in red) which will cause a lot of headaches :(

Ah thanks for the replies!

Maybe i'm just doing a terrible job searching for the information, but I am still really unsure about the step-by-step process for me from literally backing up before flashing all the way to installing the new ROM.

I used AAHK to root my phone months ago and I'm currently on CM7 with a LordMod Kernel. I have Titanium Backup installed but it has been doing its own auto backups a few days a week. I hate to be a such a pain in the ass, but can someone tell me step by step how to back up just what i need in Titanium Backup, and then step by step how to install IceColdSandwich 8.5?

I really do appreciate everyones help and i'm sorry for being such a clueless noob haha.

I am still really unsure about the step-by-step process for me from literally backing up before flashing all the way to installing the new ROM.

First, download the ROM you want - check the MD5 sum, to make sure it matches what the ROM Dev says it should be (I never used to do this, but have been told that I should have been... I guess I was just lucky).l

If you want to keep your text messages/call logs, you can download apps from Google Play that you can back them up with.

Make sure that you have backed everything up with Titanium Backup (this backs your apps and their data up).

Put a copy of the ROM that you have downloaded on the root (not in any folders) of your SD card.

Next, reboot in to recovery (from memory, I think that it is one of the reboot options when you hold the power button down in CM7).

When in recovery (ClockWorkMod), you would be able to use the volume keys to navigate and the power button to select.

First thing to do in ClockWork would be, as ral said, make a backup of your current ROM - this is so that, should anything go wrong (which it shouldn't), you can get back to where you are now.

Next, you can verify the MD5 sum of the backup (I never have though).

Perform wipes (again using the volume and power keys) - there are menu options, but it is obvious. You would want to do a "factory reset" and wipe cache.

Once wipes are done, you would install the ROM... this is done with the volume/power keys again. I think it's "install from zip" and then "select zip" (or something like that... doing this from memory).

Let the phone do it's thing and then reboot... you should be good to go!

If, on the first time you boot, it seems to be taking a while, don't worry... first boots can take a little longer. If it appears to hang and not get any further, do not worry... pull the battery and, after waiting a couple of minis, insert and try again (should all go according to plan)!

What music apps are you using? I only ever use Winamp so I'm not sure about the default music app, but it should scan and pick up music automatically so that's a bit strange that yours won't work

I'm using the two programs that came loaded in ICS. I tried CM9 tonight as well, and even though the from installed properly, same issue with the music. Should I just re format my sdcard and give that a shot? Its actually not seeing any media that I have on the SD card unless I go into fike manager or I plug into my pc, then I can see the files.

Ah ha! I think I've found the problem -

ROM Manager updated to unhide your media files - Root - RootzWiki - RootzNews - RootzWiki

ROM Manager, in its 5.0.1.3 update, placed a file called .nomedia on the root of your SD card, which causes the media scanner to skip the entire SD card when it scans your phone for media at startup. This will not only hide your ringtones, but also all of your other media files (don't worry, they're still there on your SD card, only your phone doesn't know it).
