Best video format/res for N7?

I download a lot of my movies and was curious what the best resolution and format would be to produce the best quality videos. Should I start with 1080p and convert to something else? No real issues with space as I'm using an OTG and large USB stick for media storage

N7 has resolution of 1280x800 which is 720p No real need for 1080p(1920x1080) movie there. If you had Asus Transformer Infinity or iPad then 1080p would be the right format.. or if you decide to stream 1080p from you tablet to flat screen(smart tv)

720p is way to go.. smaller size and believe smaller bitrate which is better for your battery

Btw in which format your movies are? i find converting so inconvenient takes me back to 2005 when apple relieved ipod with the video so much work and pain.. same goes with iphone.

With android it's much easier i download mkv movies and stream them from my computer to N7 by my home network ... no converting needed.

Mostly AVI's which MX Player plays well. I was just curious as I'm looking for an overall very good video depth and clarity when watching movies on it. The free copy of Transformers (while may not be the best movie) is extremely vibrant and looks very good

Which video codec are your AVIs? Mine are xvid and MX Player has trouble with them so i have to use BS Player instead. The weird thing is MX Player on my Atrix with Tegra 2 plays the exact same videos with no problems.

And HB has an android setting which works great once you configure the audio to stereo, it tend to process a little more slowly than the iPad format but it compresses it a little smaller. Most DVD movies are only 720 horizontal so not too much use blowing them up bigger because they just take up more room while the display will stretch it for you out to the edges of the screen and still look great without taking space or rip time.

Probably not, unless you are seriously short of space. Every time you transcode a movie, there will be a loss in fidelity, due to decompression and recompression. No amount of smart interpolation can get around that fact.

I take the view that devices are only going to get higher resolution/fast processing/batter battery , so I may as well keep my library in the original source format. Transcoding takes almost as long as watching the movies in the first place, so I just grin and bare the space issue.

Are there any advantages of converting mp4s to Android setting on Handbrake?

E.g. further compression with minimal loss in quality...

This is what I tried to ask originally and have yet to be answered.

What is the most ideal way to get my movie collection (currently 720p .avi's) to an ideal format for my N7? Or is the 720p .avi just fine.. I know they play, but is it possible to increase the compression at all without ruining the video quality.

You would have to convert one and see if it gets smaller ... I create my mp4 android format files from the VOB files from DVD so they definitely get smaller the problem is I can't tell if the android settings is shrinking any more then the ipad settings I used to use but I do know that the picture quality is much better without any pixelization on the android. It seems like every movie converts with hb differently and results in different sizes with the same length of movie play times.
