Honest opinion of Nexus One?

I'm currently a T-Mobile customer who uses a Jailbroken iPhone. I started out last year with a G1 but moved to the iPhone and sold the G1. I've grown tired of not being able to access 3G speed on the iPhone and want to move to a Android phone.

Currently I can get a discount on the Mytouch 3G (and CLIQ but I've heard bad things about them) that brings the price to about $150. I can't get any incentives on the Nexus one but I have seen them for sale on Craigslist for $400 - $500.

If I were to get a Mytouch 3G I'd most likely root the phone and install a custom version of Android on it (2.1 if it's available. Is it available?). I understand that this will speed up the phone a bit.

So, my question is this: Is the Nexus One worth the extra money if you can't buy it at a discount?

For people who have owned both the Nexus One and the MyTouch what are some things that each phone does better than the other? Any huge complaints about the Nexus One or the Mytouch that could be "dealbreakers?"

Thanks for all the help, I know that messages like this are often tedious.

Honest opinion of Nexus One?
Its an awesome phone. I havent expirienced any of the dust/3g problems/rumors you read on these forums.

worth not having bloatware or restrictions from att/tmobile/verizon and no contracts, maybe.

love/hate with the Nexus and T-Mo.... Love the great pricing, love the hands off approach of T-Mo (tethering to my hearts galore), and the Nexus overall is a great phone, awesome OS, a pleasure to hold, fast processor, superb looking screen indoors... but... the RF of the phone sometimes sucks (susceptible to signal weaking if you cover the bottom of the phone for example - not always, but a problem in weak signal spots)... T-Mo signal penetration sucks (thanks for 1700 Mhz *).... the Nexus screen in sunlight is an disaster...

* (I just wonder how the Europeans dell with the signal penetration issue, as it must be even worse for them at 2100 Mhz)

i'm not sure if i could justify spending an extra 250-350 dollars for a phone thats going to give you the same basic functionality. i love my nexus, but i must say if i was in your situation i would go with the cheaper option. it's still a smart phone, still 3g, still plays music, still runs android, etc.

just my .02

btw, i came over to tmobile from att for the $179 subsidized price :)

I received my N1 monday. Im still in the "wow i got a new toy" phase. I was using a BB 9530 before this for about the past year and a half. My favorite part of the phone right now is live wallpapers. It'll wear off soon im sure ..........Not yet though!!!! lol.
I havent tried to root the phone...yet. First Android phone. Not accustomed to rooting at all........yet. My honest opinion right now about the phone is that its done really well. Graphics are really good . Im no expert by any means but i dig what Google did here. Couldnt be happier as far as havin a PC/PHONE.

I have the new mytouch 1.2 and it has more RAM than the original one plus 300MB internal storage w/3.5mm headphone jack. The Nexus is a better phone no doubt but the drop off from the Nexus to 1.2 isn't as significant as it would be on the old mytouch.

With the huge price difference it's definitely worth it.

I'm rooted running a 2.1 rom and I haven't experienced any lag. Aside from BT and 3D games everything works fine. Live wallpapers is fast ... wi-fi is a go ... 2.1 apps in Market (check).

If you're not willing to break the bank for a N1, the Mytouch 1.2 is a nice consolation prize

Then again if I was you, I would use my discount on the HTC HD2. I hear they're close to porting a HTC EVO 4G rom for the HD2.

To clarify, you're running a Mytouch 1.2 rooted with a 2.1 rom?

I'm using a jailbroken iPhone too on T-Mobile and am also getting tired of Edge only. I tried a Nexus One and like mi_Canuck had problems with its RF performance. I dropped calls in places where the unlocked iPhone is fine. Funny thing is with the iPhone on ATT I dropped calls in the same spot that the Nexus One on T-Mobile dropped calls. But the iPhone on T-Mobile was loud and clear. At my house, the iPhone gives me adequate reception on T-Mobile, the Nexus One shows no signal. So, from my perspective, as a phone, the Nexus One did not work very well. I am anxiously awaiting the N1 on Verizon (will it ever happen) and maybe try it on their network.

I just bought the At&T version to use on Telus (not my first android phone).

Much faster the Hero and Magic-like night and day faster

I find the reception as good as the 3GS (probably a tad better) and better than the Hero.
Battery life is the same as the 3GS or slightly worse-sort of hard to conclude that

Keyboard is much easier to use than the Hero and Magic but it still no where as easy/fast as the iPhone.
I tried putting in the HTC keyboard but it is really buggy and crashed a bunch of times.

Rooted and running Cyanogen.

To put it simply, the Nexus One blows the mt3g away. If price is a factor, looks at it this way, I'm not sure what plan you're on but:

MT3G $150 + $80/month plan for 2-years = $2070 over those 2-years
N1 $530 + $60/month plan for 2-years = $1970 over those 2-years with the same exact plan but it's $20/month cheaper with an Even More Plus plan since you bought the phone unsubsidized.

Since the iPhone 3G is considered a poor phone due to its radio performance, does that make the Nexus worse than poor?

I never had a single issue with radio on the iPhone in the UK. Now that O2 have seemingly fixed the mast in my area (a problem I reported as my BB Curve behaved exactly like the N1 in terms of radio) I find the N1 works flawlessly.

I also have no dust, I've dropped it (badly), don't care about the AMOLED argument, can see the screen in the sun, have a battery which easily lasts a day... so I'm happy.

When my contract upgrade is due soon I'll get the HTC Incredible (hopefully on O2) and eBay the Incredible.

Dropped calls on the iPhone are legendary here in the US. My daughter had (I emphasize had) an iPhone she used for business in the DC area (lots of car travel) and she felt that she was dropping a lot of calls. A trip to the Apple store revealed she was dropping more than 50% of her calls! She's now using the iPhone as an iPod touch and making her calls on a Droid Eris via Verizon. The dropped calls have virtually disappeared.

I know many folks who have done basically the very same thing here in the Austin area.

I jailbroke and unlocked mine and went to T-Mobile and my dropped calls were cut by 90%.

And the weird thing is that according to the ATT map I live in an area with great coverage!

I wish the N1 had a better radio. When I tried one I had the same issues as I had with the iPhone: random dropped calls in areas where I should have good service.

All I hear about from the US is dropped calls on this network, that network. Nobody seems happy with their coverage over there!
I've literally not had 1 single dropped call on my N1 (o2) since I purchased it. Saying that, the same goes for all the iPhones I had as well though.

I guess the UK has a much more stable cellular network than the US.

As per my opinion of the N1. I used an iPhone 3G and 3GS for 2 years (1 year each phone) and find the N1 to be some what more suiting to me. I like the freedom to do what ever I want on it and not be controlled by something like iTunes for backups or music.
The fact I can use it like an external drive anywhere I go is something I really missed with my iPhone. What use is carrying around 16GB of memory if you cant use it!

Also I haven't 'suffered' any of the reported dust problems, I have no issues with using the N1 in daylight, sunlight, lowlight, no light etc.
The possible only issue I do have with it is the software keys (back, menu, home, search) They're so awkwardly missaligned it's not even funny.
If you don't press them with the entire end of your finger they don't work, if you don't press slightly above their icon, they don't work.
That may only be me but it is sometimes quite annoying. Don't get me wrong though, they're still very usable once you adjust to how they work.

Hope this helps.

That's probably the only minor niggle I have. Although I have learned to swipe up the software keys slightly and it is now no longer an issue as I do this naturally.
