Programs Opening By Themselves??

OK, I am fairly new to the Eris, and have had pretty good luck with battery life, until a couple days ago.

I take it off the charger, and an hour later I am down to 80%. No WiFi, no GPS on, etc. I check with ATK and find Browser, Music, Mail, etc etc all open. I could have SWORN I killed them.

Soooo, today after I took the Eris off its charger, I reboot it, then check ATK, kill any open programs, and go about my day.

2 hours later, I look, and my battery is at 74%! WTH!? So I open ATK, and there is all these programs open again, and all I have done in that 2 hours is send a couple texts.

The only change I made recently is I installed PandaHome, didn't really like any of the themes, and uninstalled it all. Could it have left something behind that is opening programs?

Thanks in advance for any advise!

I think the consensus is that task killers actually do more damage than they do good. Im not sure if thats your problem, it IS ok for programs to be running in the background and alot of them dont really waste any battery. You should check your awake time percentage and if its at 100% then that is not a good thing. Also check the battery saver tips thread located at the top of the forum.

well, there is a great debate on task killers. the main thing is... the system does turn on apps randomly but it knows when to turn them off. If you use the "back" button/touch this typically kills/closes programs. If you use the home button/touch that leaves that app open. You can use a task killer effectively (yes its very possible) but you have to use it with the knowledge that some apps will always turn themselves on in the background and turn themselves off as well as understanding what each app/process does (so you dont kill things you shouldn't or plain just can't heh). The question you need to figure out is pretty easy.

install Spare Parts from the market, check your battery history, and what the Partial Awake usage is... feel free to explore the option usage options but the partial awake usages should help you figure out what is keeping your phone active at all times.

That will tell you for sure what app is draining your juice! uninstall it, or check its settings to reduce its "refresh activities".

Like right now, Voice Dialer, and Music are running and I haven't used the phone for anything today but texting, and DLing Spare Parts...odd

(according to ATK, I just used it to quick check the programs, not kill them)

Correct those are the stock apps that come with the Eris and will always be running in the background, this is normal. Yes you can use ATK to kill them if you wish. I do not use task killer anymore and found my battery life improved.

Gotcha. Thanks.

It's just weird that my battery life suddenly got worse after a couple weeks:thinking:

Oh well, we will see how it goes today...

I've noticed the same thing, and not just with stock apps. MixZingLite, Astrid, SportsTap, Bloo, and MLB Headlines are all running; and I didn't start any of them. Odd.

Nah, I don't think it has anything to do with task killers. My phone has a ghost to.

I will have rebooted my phone, opened nothing, and have had it charging for hours when things happen. My phone will start playing music. I go to check the phone like wtf and its got the music app running in the background playing a random song off the sdcard. If its not the music app sometimes its rockon. Then sometimes pandora will start up by itself at 4 in the morning while I'm asleep.

Something else weird is when I haven't even opened Pandora since I've rebooted phone and I listen to Slacker radio, if I listen to a song all the way thru on Slacker, Pandora will open and start trying to play over top of Slacker resulting in a remix of songs between Slacker and Pandora. It only happens if I listen to a song all the way thru tho. If I skip the song it works fine.

And before everyone starts saying I've got alot of apps or a task killer. Nope and nada. Never had a task killer and I've got Pandora, Rockon, Slacker, My Verizon, and Ak Notepad as my apps. Its the ghost in the machine x_x.

BTW this started happening when I installed the first 2.1 leak. I have yet to update to the new leak since I am not gonna take another chance on losing root.
