keeping unwanted apps from popping up

New here, and new to android. just got a galaxy SIII(Verizon). I have become annoyed with the accuweather app. would rather have the Weather Channel. Figured I would just delete it. Couldn't do it. after some research, found that you cannot delete apps which came on the phone (system apps) unless you "root" the phone. Since I have no idea what that means, I have figured that I shouldn't try to do it. and even if I could, i read it may void the warranty.

SO, is there some way to tamp down unwanted apps like the accuweather so they don't pop up? like maybe put a big rock on top of them? Anything?

I suspect this or very similar questions have been asked in the past, so i apologize for being repetitive.

Check the settings within the app. Most will have a tab for notifications.

This. Also if you want you can use a launcher from the playstore and it should have an option to hide the app if you want too.

What do you mean, pop up? Just drag it off the screen to the trash bin.

You can't delete apps that are in system/apps since they came with the phone(bloatware). Unless you root the phone.
