[Verizon] Google Wallet Guide: Avoid Secure Element Brick [Updated 5/25/13]

I want to make a backup so I can dirty flash a ROM update. But IF things get screwy, I will have to restore my nandroid. Okay, here's MY question:

Can I restore a nandroid backup - Wallet data included - without bricking the secure element? Or should I wipe Google Wallet before MAKING the nandroid so it restores at a zero state?

If so, that's gonna complicate things a little...

I've done both. Wallet still works. I usually make a nandroid right before I flash a new ROM, so wallet is already prepped.
But I also make nandroids once a week in case I mess something up. I don't prep wallet for these.

Uh Jova, what exactly do you mean by "prepping" Wallet? Are you referring to the process of wiping it?

So what I am understanding from you is: restoring a nandroid - with Wallet data intact - will NOT brick the secure element.

But a TiBU restore of data WILL. So I always restore my Wallet backup in TiBU that has ZERO data.

Is that accurate?

Yeah, wipe data from in app = prepping for a new ROM.

But the first time I flashed a ROM while I had Google wallet, I forgot and restored from TiBu. Didn't brick it.

Okay,

Been away for almost a week...my bad...here is my experience.

Follow directions when fresh installing.

When going dirty there is no need to follow instructions in my experience.

If you forget to follow instructions, and I have done it, do this: Open Wallet. Go through the motions. Then reset Wallet in app. Then clear data from within settings. Now go back to Wallet and redo the process. Works every time. Yes you reenter you card info but this protects your secure element.

Sorry for the delay!

Hey folks, I thought I'd let you know that Wallet released an update to v12 today.

I am running a Jelly Bean ROM and had restored Wallet v5 from TiBU (zero data), then logged back in to the app and set it all up.

Instead of going to Play on my phone, I went to play.google.com on my PC, logged in, and searched for Wallet. Sure enough, v12 update: and the option to install to phone!

I hit "install", selected "Samsung Galaxy Nexus" and hit okay. Google pushed the app to my phone and updated the app! :D

So you don't necessarily have to run all over the place looking for apk's to sideload. Try this method and see if it works for you.

I wonder if this is a JB thing. I didn't have any luck with this on AOKP. I have Wallet R67-v4 installed now. Say, anyone have the apk floating around for the latest?

Does this work with the Jellybean update? I have still been getting the unsupported device message.

I'm running the CM10 preview build and have had no issues so far. I didn't touch Google Wallet when I reverted stock or when I flashed the ROM. I think they may have changed something because it works fine straight from the Play store. I was able to add the Google Prepaid card as well as my debit card. I haven't actually tried paying yet (since flashing) but it should work.

Edit: I have the unsupported device message at the top, but I've had it say that before and still work perfectly.

Is it really necessary to follow all steps in first post? I have read that all you have to do is simply go to menu->settings->reset google wallet......and then you are ready to flash.

anyone had success with this method?

I am getting ready to flash the new Bugless build (download times right now are insanely slow), but want Wallet to work.

I think it used to be an issue where if you don't clear Google Wallet data from within the app you wouldn't be able to use it after wiping/flashing/etc. I am assuming that this is no longer an issue because I have never cleared any Google Wallet data and have not had any problems.

Also, I'm not sure if this affects the Google Prepaid balance or not, but since you can add almost any card to Google Wallet now (and don't have to keep reloading the prepaid card for it to work), it's not really an issue anymore.

Did anybody else get this email recently? I just got it today and was wondering if anybody has updated yet.

satellitez, is the one you linked the one the same as this update?

I got the email but I think the email came out after the update because I already had my card set up at least a few days before I saw that.

Up to date google wallet if anyone needs it: http://db.tt/4Xm1Y6ro

Look in [mods] apk

I noticed it's with other modded apk's. This isn't modded is it?

EDIT: What is lockrings? do they replace the lock-ring on the lockscreen? That's awesome! Are they flashable. Sorry, I started browsing around and found amazing wallpapers and "lockrings". Sounds cool.

Are you using a Visa/ any card other than MasterCard (ie. The update that that email I got was talking about?)

TIA.

EDIT: FYI I installed the apk that is posted above and it installed and set up fine. I've got my Visa debit and credit cards loaded up, now I'm just waiting for opportunity to use them.

I only use mine at PetCo and Walgreens. I don't know where else they have the PayPass reader, Lol.

My card is actually a MasterCard, but I think the update still affected it. I think before only Citi MasterCard credit cards were allowed. I added my Debit MasterCard and it still assigns a virtual MasterCard number to it.

Is secure element still brickable after the update for any credit card?

I go through the reset/clear process described in the first post everytime I clean flash, so I'm not sure. I have dirty flashed at least 5 times on the old version without doing the reset/clear process and haven't had any issues. I haven't had a chance to dirty flash anything since updating Wallet, but if I do I'll let you know.

Can I get a clear answer on this....

I have not used GW since I rooted because i was afraid of bricking GW/secure element.

So if set up GW, and I dirty flash the new version of a ROM, do I have to wipe GW everytime?

I understand wiping if I'm clean/wiping data on the phone for a ROM.

But do I really have to do this everytime I upgrade my ROM to the newest version, i.e. Xenon v9 ---> dirty flash Xenon v10?

Thanks!
