Gmail; Mark as Read and more frequent updates possible?

Like the title states, looking to update more often (Get emails as they arrive) and to have the option of Mark as Read. Possible?

Just so to be clear you mean "Mark as Read" not Mark as Unread"? I haven't tried to mark as read before but I do know if you long press on a read email it'll show the option for mark as unread. You make be able to do the same with a new email.

Solved that one, thanks though. Looking at quicker notification on incoming mail still!

Gmail uses IMAP IDLE which is as close to push email as you can get. I do find it is dependent on you mobile connection. I also have a few gmail accounts set up in K-9 email client (free from the market), and it is the same, mostly instant notification, unless my connection is weak. The latest google voice app also supports this standard.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE! I don't have a dataplan. My email is running through with the normal sync that woks when disconnected from data. Would these alt. apps work without data?

So I had a similar situation... when i got my phone, I was testing the gmail functionality the first night (last night), before calling and getting on a data plan. It worked, but was slow. Today I added the data plan to my account and the notifications _appear_ to be coming much faster (just tested 2; the first took about 15 seconds the second a couple of minutes, but in fairness, my connection is zero bars right now).

So while I'm not sure, as this is only my second day with the phone, it certainly appears having a data plan makes a difference.

(somewhat related - I couldn't get Google Maps to work at all until I got the data plan)
