Hi,
This is my first smart phone (bought it on Google play w/o contract - have a no data T-mobile account and depend on wireless for using it) and I have had it for a week - I still haven't figured out basic features and the most important one for me is to handle this phone when I step into a meeting. Any help will be appreciated. Also, any other tips on this phone will be welcome.

Thank you

Athavan

The simplest way is to unlock the phone and hold the down volume button until you're in silent. I'm not on a stock ROM so I'm not sure, but you may be able to hold the power button and it will bring up a Silencing toggle. For faster ways, you'll need a lock screen app like Widget Locker or be on a custom ROM that allows you to silent the phone at the lock screen.
Also, welcome to the forums!

Am I the only Nexus user having problem awaking my Nexus when silent mode is turned on by power button/screen? I mean, no problems turning silent on, but I just can't turn off the silent mode tapping on same button!

Android version 4.0.4, from Brazil. Here is called Samsung Galaxy X, but it's the same phone. Band version: I9250UILE1.

Edit: GOOD LORD! Just noted there's a "silent icon" and a "awake icon"!!!!! Hiding my face of shame..........

I use Widget Locker to replace my lock screen. Swipe up toggles silent/ vibrate/ normal. You can change the order and take out vibrate if you want. Right is unlock, left toggles my flashlight, and down brings up my camera app.

In the screenshot, I had already touched the middle, so the icons appeared. Otherwise, I just see the middle part of the lock until I touch it.

There is the ghetto trick we used with laptops in class to make sure. Cut the connector off of a cheap pair of headphones. Insert connector into headphone jack and voila! Instant foolproof silent mode.

To be fair, that won't work if you get a notification or phone call. Both the external speaker and headphone jack play the notification sounds on mine.

I use Power Toggles (its free - no ads) and it works really well for me. I set up a widget bar that has Silent Mode, Screen Lock, Airplane Mode, Screen Timeout and Brightness. That way I never have to press the Power button or go into Settings to do any of those things. Every fewer press of that button helps...

I've actually been working on making my phone that little bit smarter with a 'no-use' mode, which puts my phone into silent mode and shuts off the radios at the same time (mostly for saving power). It automatically comes out of it when an alarm goes off, too. As well as the power saving thing, and not disturbing you in the night, that means that you're informed of any e-mails, texts, etc that were sent in the night as soon as you wake up.

I don't know if anyone uses Locale, but it's a great app! You can create situations and in those situations you can put in how you want your phone to behave. Ringtones, Silent, Vibrate etc, you can also change the background which is great if you have nsfw photos as your background. It automatically changes as soon as your in an approximate distance from wherever the situation is. Definitely an app worth taking a look at!

you could set up an app like Tasker to silence your phone whenever you plug in a headphone jack lol although I can see how that could be annoying too.. >.>

There is a more quick way. I recently found an android app named as Profilo. This app has a lot of features to silent phone quickly. Even you can just shake your mobile to silent and shake again to undo. This is only one feature you can check others. Here is the link:
