Speed dial question

Maybe this question should go in the app area but I need to know specific to the Motorola Droid.....does anyone know of a simple little app that will let me long press a number on the touchscreen keypad and speed dial a phone number from it.

I am using the Dialer One app and love it. It has speed dial for numbers 2 - 9 and T9 search for contacts, it's fairly customizable as well. It's free and works for me.
Speed Dial Old School is $1 and has speed dial numbers 1 - 99, seems to get decent reviews, I have not tried it.
You can make shortcuts and add them to your home (or any, even a folder) screen too.

I also use dialer one and love it. It will do exactly what you say. I personally don't even use the speed dial on it, I use it because I love the T9 search and the way the call log will list a person just once with a number In parentheses indicating how many times that person has called or been called. It cleans up the call log a lot.

As for what speed dial I use, I prefer quickdial. It's an app I put on my home page so you can access up to 36 people real easily. I know you asked for a speed dial in your dialer, but I though I would mention this one because I found it to be easier than the number speed dials.

I'd like to know the answer to this as well. My dad is considering getting an Android phone but he won't be able to make do without the regular old number speed dials, especially since he's been using regular old dumbphone cell phones for probably about 15 years now. Speed Dial Old School sounds promising; does it integrate with the regular Phone app or does it have a separate dialer?

Do you folks realize that you can put a shortcut to a phone number on your home screen? Just touch the shortcut and the number automatically dials. This is a built-in. You don't even need to be in the phone app to make it happen.

I have been using Speed Dial Old school for a while and love it. I to was so used to the old style phones and love this app. It uses the stock phone pad. just tap the number 1-99 and thats it. I like it better than the shortcut which I also use for some contacts. Its just personal preference. If your dads "old school" like me. this is it.

My man, you're wasting your breath. In dozens of threads, this feature of stock Android has been mentioned over and over. People just hate change. I mean, it must be EASIER to 'remember' that speed dial 2 is for Tom Jones instead of just pressing the 'Tom Jones' speed dial shortcut on the home screen.

It's not that I hate change, I just prefer to use the dialer to call someone. If there were better icons that were easy to read I'd be all over icon-dialing! For now I'll stick with what I like.
Anyway, Dialer One was just updated, it now has speed dial through 99. This is a welcome update for me and my old fashioned ways.

I don't understand why you are so sure I need to do things your way. Really now, this is the fun of Android...different ways to do the same thing and no one way is better or more 'right'.
I will use my speed dial and you will use your short cuts and we will both be happy.
Although I don't have to, I will explain again. I just LIKE speed dial. I don't like a bunch of icons on my screens. I don't want to make a folder for all my contacts. I like a dialer and I like speed dial.
Good Lord man, what's the big deal?

Clemetine - Any assistance in getting Dialer One speed dial to work. I see where it says to create speed dial in context menu of the contact? That's about where I get lost? Thanks in advance.

Long press the contact, select speed dial, assign a number.
After you have them set you can use the menu to view/delete them.

I don't see the "select speed dial" option - are you under stock Droid contact list or the Dialer? Either option I don't see that choice.

Do you have Dialer One set as the default dialer? Click the green phone icon and it will bring up contacts, you should then be able to long press and get the options.

If you use more than 16 speed dials you'd need to take up two screens to use the shortcuts and this makes it even slower to make a phone call. Some people have had their phones for so long that they have totally memorized dozens of contacts' speed dial numbers. It's also much faster to dial one number you have memorized and press send than it is to look for the contact you want to call on your home screen. So yes, it is easier to 'remember', thanks for pointing that out.

I'm pretty good at memorizing numbers though, so it works out for me. I remember when I first found the "Recite Pi" app in the Market and memorized 100 digits in two days.

I dunno, I think most people have also been using standard number speed dial for so long that they're used to it. It just seems to me that it would be muscle memory by now.

i just DL'd DIALER ONE and NUBDIAL.

both are free.. Dialer One is pretty nice. I have it set as default dialer for now..

Dialer One~ Searches contacts by NAME only, not by number.
Options to text, call, save speed dial, share, add event when you long press a contact. One touch Speed dial up to 99 numbers. Weird quirk~ speed dials ending in 1, ~11, 21, etc ~ all end up dialing voicemail.

NUBDIAL~ Searches by name AND number. No Speed dials, options to text are redirected thru stock contact app.

DIALER ONE is by far more advanced with options, just wish it would search by number as well.

i had contacts saved on my home screen, but true~ if you have more than 4, you are taking up a lot of room, and looking for names, rather than just opening phone and holding a button. i tried putting the contacts in a folder, but then i had to open a folder, find the contact.... a lot of steps just for calling..
Fortunately, i remember numbers easily. before cell phones were an everyday item, i memorized everyones numbers i would need to call. it just came easy to me. So for speed dials, i use facts/memories as to what number i set a contact as... Ex~ my sister was born is 84, thus speed dial 84. friend's number began 68, so she became speed dial 68.....
My husband was speed dial #8 for years on every phone i have has since 2002, so its nice to just hold down the #8 finally!

Glad I found this forum. In my job I always saved my co-workers by badge number for easy dialing, and with my BB I couldn't do it. This just sealed the deal that Android is the sweetest thing going for phones!
