Any new phone rumors for Sprint?

I really hope the only reason Motorola isn't given more love on Sprint is because of Verizon exclusivity:

That rendering looks awesome and would not mind a device like that. Here's to hoping there's a Moto Nexus device in the pipeline, otherwise I'll giving LG or Samsung a spin.

Commit to a nearly-impossible-to-meet volume to get the iPhone, and dump Motorola because of deals they make with Verizon?

I really haven't had either as my primary phone before, so I couldn't even say from personal experience, but all the oem's have stepped up enough for me to give them a fair chance.

That's reasonable, I suppose, so I took a look...

I left out an important bit: I require a world (aka: international) phone. It turns out the Photon Q is currently Sprint's only Android world phone, and that phone is definitely not acceptable.

For the life of me I cannot imagine what they're thinking. For what little good it's likely to do, I'm currently formulating a polite "what the hell?" email to Dan Hesse. (Which, of course, probably won't actually be seen or read by him, but...)

I don't know for sure that I'm going to move to a smartphone and data plan, soon, but, if I do, it looks like I'll have to change carriers. That would be a shame.

Totally understandable, Jim. I totally agree. Even with the photon q as the only world phone, Sprint locked the SIM on the q, instead if keeping it unlocked like on the original Photon. There's no reason people wouldn't just buy a prepaid phone and minutes while traveling internationally vs. using their sprint phone. Businesses might encourage the use internationally, for purposes of tax shelter (due to high cost international use), but to the general consumer, it's not a great selling point.

I still love my original photon, which is why I'm keeping it as my dedicated music player/backup phone/international phone, but I'm not exactly sure sprint is making all the right decisions in order to garner new customers. I'm starting to wonder if it really is a goal to get close to att/verizon or remain where they are and be content with that.

That annoys the bejesus out of me. They're essentially saying "You're bound to us, no matter where you go, until the end of time, even after you've met your subsidization commitment."

Yeah, but now they need to carry two phones around: One they can actually use, and the other containing, essentially, their digital lives.

Sprint continues to give me fewer and fewer reasons to stay with them.

Garner new customers? I wonder if they're making the right decisions to keep the ones they have. They're certainly on the verge of blowing it with this one.

They're losing money. They cannot remain where they are.

Per the "How a Sprint Phone is Born" slides, it showed a 5.5 phablet 1H 2013. Sprint knew about this Note 2 a while ago, huh? I'm hoping they will release it this December 2012 and not make me wait longer.

I read this before. This was a great read. Highly informative. I saw 5.5 in one of the diagrams and haave been salavating ever since. THIS is what I;m holding out for,

Dont be mislead...the q is not a world phone. It has international roaming capability.

All things considered, at this point, I'm pretty much reluctantly coming to the conclusion I'll be switching carriers. If that happens: When my wife's contract is up: She'll be switched, too. Unlikely we'll be back, unless VZ (it'll probably be VZ) really annoys me. Being as the vast majority of my friends, colleagues and business acquaintances are on VZ, and find them acceptable, odds are we will, too.

I honestly do not understand Sprint's "thinking."

You have to pick which carrier meets your specific needs. That being said, do plenty of research. Your best world capable phones are going to come from gsm carriers...and its still not as easy as just popping in a sim from local carrier while abroad.

Your words don't exactly look the most positive, so they come off as if you have a big gripe towards Sprint, which you have every rite to feel, but just wanted to make sure that you're not angry with any of us for some of the things we've said because even your answers or quotes for some of us are a little negatively charged...at least, that's how your words come off.

I am curious of whst you have seen thst you like Jim for phone offerings on other carriers. Currently the offerings from lg samsung and htc are identicsl on 3 of the 4 majors.

Ok so as for sim....all carrier phones are sim locked...or locked specific to thst carrier.

Verizon and sprint do this via esn database
Tmo and att through programming and sim card.

For example. I buy blah blah blah on att..go to england....i cant just buy a pre paid sim and throw it in the phone. A sim unlock code is required. That unlock code is tied to the imie of the device.

Att refuses to give out unlock codes for typically up to 6 months. Most likely to prevent fraud. This gives users only two options...pay an online company to obtain the unlock code or in some cases root or jailbreak the device.

Little known fact...the sprint iphone can be used on almost any carrier and overseas. It just has to be jailbroken

Lol...everyone has the same phones ..att sprint tmo..even verizon. Verizon has one line the others do not carry and I fail to see anything superior in the droid branded line.

Hmmm... I guess just the Motorola brand. I guess it seems that Sprint's lacking, to me, because they don't have what I'm looking for, whereas VZ does.

Ah. Okay. Thanks for the info. Now that you mention it, I think I saw a complaint about this in another forum, related to either VZ or "AT&T."

I suppose it makes sense. Prevents a user from getting a subsidized phone, then taking it to Europe or some other GSM area, bailing on the contract and stiffing the provider that subsidized the purchase.

Does Sprint eventually, after some time, unlock the SIM? If not: I see no point in a world phone. A sticky or FAQ entry here might be handy.

Some Moto phones are built a bit more robustly than many other phones. VZ' 'Droids, for example, have the Kevlar shells, Gorilla Glass fronts and, IIRC, titanium or high-strength aluminium internal frames. ISTR the Photon was built similarly?
