Motorola promises to upgrade all devices to JB

Upvote 0
From what I understand, that's only if you buy one of the three new phones they announced today, which are all Verizon exclusives. It doesn't do much for us.
I was just going to edit that post to say that would be great if they were coming out w/ new phones for Sprint. Unfortunately all we're hearing from Sprint's end of things is crickets! :(

LOL...$100 bucks doesn't mean squat, considering the only Sprint Moto phone being offered is the MoPhoQ...well, my response is PhoQ, Motorola for having a love affair with Verizon...hahahaha.

Motorola promises developer phones, Jelly Bean, and an incentive for those left behind

Now, if they offered the Razr Maxx HD (w/ different branding) for Sprint as the "successor" to the MoPho, then I might've been okay with it, especially if the SIM would still be unlocked just like the MoPho.

I seriously hope Google is looking into getting away from that Motorola/Verizon exclusivity because I think that's hurting Motorola the most, when it comes to competing with other OEM's.

And it'll likely remain crickets until Google starts to throw more weight around and get rid of that Verizon exclusivity. Verizon can keep the Droid branding (which is a marketing gimic anyway). I just want to have all of the best options available to me on the provider that I choose to stay with. So frustrating. It's no wonder that, for the first time ever, I'm actually considering a Samsung (Galaxy Note 2, if it does in fact come to Sprint) and a LG (Optimus G/Eclipse) as my next phone.

Drex, well put! I feel the same way about Photon Q. Succesor my...well anyway!
I'm SO disappointed with Sprint & their lack of new phones! I don't want a miniature tablet but with the lack of options I'm considering the Note 2 if it comes to Sprint. I like everything about the Galaxy III but it's big. I was in the Sprint store over the weekend & without a case it's not bad but by the time you add a case I don't know that it would fit in my pocket.
GRR Sprint!

Boo. Just wishfull thinking I guess.

I actually love my photon so much that I would be happy keeping this thing until it can no longer run....it just fits for me - international capable, kick ass car dock.... i just love the damn thing - favorite phone ever.

Rooting is great and all, but without a truly unlocked bootloader, the CM10 roms are not fully functional. I had the CM9 ROM install and I liked it but not having a working video cam and 4G is a bit of a deal breaker for me.

Anyway, I'm pretty novice when it comes to the android updates etc.... was thinking that maybe since the ICS update is not complete(and so late), it wouldn't be that hard to push it up to JB at cost of an extra month or something....

Rose colored glasses again I suppose.

So just to be even more optimistic - I did some snooping around and at this link.....

https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/ci/documents/detail/2/motorola-jelly-bean-rebate_en-US

...it says in the fine print: "1. Applies to United States sales of Android Motorola smartphones first offered in 2011 or later"

Also, in the drop down list of devices when you request to be notified of news via email, you see the photon in the list.... promising? Better than NOT seeing it in the list?

I mean, I'm not getting rid of my photon ANY time soon, so I guess I have no reason to not just remain hopeful and wait.

The Photon was scheduled to get its ICS update in Q4. Are they going directly to JB? That would be awesome, but I'm honestly not holding my breath at this point. Taking a year to release the next version of the OS is ridiculous, and even more so when that version isn't even the latest one. I love my Photon too, and plan on keeping it even after I upgrade (whenever that is), but I've come to accept that it will be a GB phone only unless I unlock its bootloader.

My next phone will almost certainly *not* be a Motorola. They've just broken my heart one too many times (lack of push for the Photon, the laughable successor to the Photon, new phones all Verizon exclusive, terrible update schedule, etc.)

I love the mopho too. So disappointed there wouldn't be a true successor and even disgusted that there still seems to be a verizon exclusivity with the best motorola phones. I'm not giving up on moto entirely because they're a Google company now. A year from now they could possibly shock us all and come out with a best seller. Just like Samsung made a comeback, no reason motorola can't, especially with Google at the top of the umbrella.

My guess is the MO'PHO & any other phones that are scheduled to get ICS will get JELLY BEAN & those who have phones released in 2011 who were not on the MOTOROLA timetable to get ICS will not get JELLY BEAN.

For those of us w/the MO'PHO who have invested $100's in WEBTOP/LAPDOCK devices,this, IMHO, is a win/win situation :

If we should see JELLY BEAN : A resounding WIN!, we'll have the latest & greatest O/S, w/the only downside being that WEBTOP will also (most likely) be bumped up to v3.0.

Should we be left w/GINGERBREAD 2.3.5: A win, but, by the thinnest of margins, w/the silver lining being we get to keep the original, true WEBTOP experience. For those of us who prize WEBTOP,let MOTOROLA keep the $100.

Those who aren't heavily vested in WEBTOP & may feel left behind (should ICS or JELLY BEAN never arrive), the $100 w/trade-in towards a new device may not seem like much of a consolation, but, at least it's something, unless you can get more than $100 for your MO'PHO on eBay, Craigslist, etc....

Either scenario looks good to me, as I see MOTOROLA/GOOGLE providing more timely support for their future ANDROID devices, the only piece left in the puzzle is for MOTOROLA/GOOGLE to offer the devices on ALL the major carriers (& the regional carriers for that matter as well).

I would think now that Google is in control, the carrier scope would widen..... Let's hope. Photon Q looked great until that slider peeked out.....

I'm so hoping for this. I'd have been perfectly content, if the Photon successor were the Razr Maxx HD (renamed).

I would've even been happy with the Razr M (renamed) w/ a kickstand. Can you imagine how awesome the Razr M w/ an integrated kickstand would be? Obviously, HTC accomplished keeping the phone thin while also making an integrated kickstand, so no reason Motorola couldn't accomplish it as well.

Maybe I'll come back to Moto once the Google influence is strong enough to show, but for now I just can't see myself buying another one. A shame, too, because the Photon really is a fantastic phone.

Can't say I blame you for the sentiment, especially if 4G LTE w/SPRINT is available in your area.

As I stated in my previous post, I see myself in a decent set of circumstances. I've got a great phone in the OG MO'PHO, w/WIMAX available, w/the possible upgrade to JELLY BEAN. I can wait it out until a RAZR-ESQUE phone lands @ SPRINT, provided the existing 3G/4G WIMAX doesn't continue to degrade. If the network degradation continues, I'll be looking @ VZW, or perhaps T-MOBILE, should MOTOROLA introduce the RAZR line, or, something very similar, to Carly & Co. :D

Definitely inderstandable. If there is one thing that I whole heartedly believe about moto now, it's that they are hands down the best OEM at making accessories for their phones. Nobody does it better...just like 007.

I'm giving google a year and a half (just enough time until close to my next upgrade) to right the Motorola ship.

alll i can say is....

when i fix things on my old photon...(now my daughters) it feels TINY....

compared to this s3....which even with this ballistic case (which was handy when i dropped it yesterday) it fits in my little side pocket of my shorts....and the clip is actually pretty easy to unhook when needed.....

plus its an easy enough case to take off when i dont need or want all that bulk...or to wipe down the phone...

As much as I have enjoyed my MoPho, as soon as Miami gets LTE, my MoPho days are over so whether I get IC or JB is mostly irrelevent at this point. As far as exclusives are concerned its all about money and who is willing to pay for it. If you want sprint to keep being the less expensive option then you have to be patient and get the phones after the exclusivity runs out. I hate to wait too but I don't want to pay an extra $100 a month just to be the first. That razr maxx hd looks sweet though!

It matters very little to most people if the phone is exclusive to their network, but they do care if they can't get it on their network. The only company that is doing exclusives at this point is Motorola (maybe LG "tailoring" the same phone to specific networks can be considered "exclusive" but I don't.). Samsung, HTC, LG have their high end phones on all networks, Motorola is the only one tied to big red at the hip (it's making them money so why break the streak I guess). Last quarter was the first time that Motorola has had the top selling phone on Verzion in along time.

Very good point, edlex, and likely part of the reasoning behind Sprint not necessarily offering all the "best" from the OEM's. They have to be more selective without the $$ to truly pay for exclusivity. So, in that respect, keeping the consumers' costs down is fine as long as the monthly costs for service stay lower than the competition.

with a little bit of work, a decent internet connection, and about 12 hours time i was able to get a photon 4g from sprint onto verizons network... wouldnt the reverse be possible as well? Id buy the one from verizon and program it onto sprints network. >.<

Care to share how you did this? I'm sure this would be of interest to quite a few here in the forum.

If it's a lengthy process, which I suspect it is, you may want to post this in the ALL THINGS ROOT section of this forum.

I know I'd be more than interested, especially if the opposite could be accompished (VZW phone to SPRINT, namely the RAZR MAXX for moi).
