Apple Inc. is developing a new iPhone to debut this summer and also appears to be working on a model for U.S. mobile phone operator Verizon Wireless, say people briefed on the matter.

While Apple has unveiled a new iPhone every June or July since launching the product in 2007, the new model with CDMA capability, the cellular technology used by Verizon, is notable because Apple and AT&T Inc. have long had an exclusive relationship with the iPhone. That has given AT&T a competitive edge over other carriers including Verizon for the last three years.
The people briefed on the matter said one of the new iPhones is being manufactured by Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., which produced Apple's previous iPhones. The model that has CDMA capability, used by Verizon Wireless, is being manufactured by Pegatron Technology Corp., the contract manufacturing subsidiary of Taiwan's ASUSTeK Computer Inc., said these people.
One person familiar with the situation said Pegatron is scheduled to start mass producing the CDMA iPhones in September, but it was unclear when Apple might make the model available.

Spokespeople for Apple, Pegatron, Hon Hai and Verizon Wireless, which is majority owned by Verizon Communications Inc., declined to comment.
CDMA is a U.S. wireless technology adopted by Verizon, Sprint Corp. and a handful of operators in countries incuding South Korea and Japan. The vast majority of carriers world-wide

Second iPhone I've owned.

First bought a 3G when it released, used it for a about a year, loved it in the beginning but I just got bored of it. I just like getting new EVERYTHING all the time, not just phones.

After I got rid of my 3G, I got a Pre (returned in a week) Bold (used for a few months) Droid (liked it, but returned in a week) then a Bold 9700 (used for a few months) and then back in January, I bought a 3GS.

Honestly, it really is a great phone, and with the App Store, you can do just about everything.

But, I just have gotten bored with it, I don't use it as anything but a phone/twitter client/GPS and I'm ready to get more in-depth with a different OS.

There is a reason it is so popular with everything it can do, but as a true nerd at heart, I need something more "tech" and the stale iPhone OS just isn't doing it anymore for me.

Why would you even buy an iphone in the first place? There's nothing interesting about the OS at all.

1) When I got the 3G, pretty sure that the only Android device out was the G1 and I was not interested in that version at all.

2) I genuinely like most Apple products (except the iPad)

3) I like having a phone that syncs with my computer seamlessly. The reason I stopped using BlackBerries was that desktop manager crashed on my Mac every time I opened it. I'm not going to use a smartphone that can't sync with my computer.

i'm coming from a Centro - been using Palms for 10+ years. i tried the Pre for a weekend at launch and returned it and went back to Centro.

my concern with Android is the PIM Apps - Contacts and Calendar. i hope they will be as easy to use as PalmOS (or reasonably close).

i don't care to do a lot of tweaking and customizing - so iPhone's closed OS wouldn't bother me so much. i would consider it if it was on Sprint with 4G. i've never bought an Apple product in my life (except for an Apple headset for my Centro) but i give them credit for making great quality products.

Being on a 2G iPhone I would consider it if it could give the EVO a run for it's money, aka 1Ghz, better HD video camera, 4G, bigger higher res screen, and front facing camera. Also iPhone OS 4.0 would really have to bring some new innovations. I'm just kind of bored of my iPhone now having it for 2 years.

The PIM apps are good because if you have a G-Mail account, you can upload your contacts and calendar into there, and they will 2-way sync between your device and your desktop whenever there is a change.

yes i know about the Gmail Mail/Contacts/Calendar OTA Push Sync which is a beautiful thing BUT i'm concerned about the usability of the actual PIM Apps vs. the old PalmOS/Treo/Centro Apps that were so easy to use. i've posted a thread in the Apps forum asking for possible suggestions.

I would consider it. I've been using a Touch for several years and really do like it's tight integration. But for me to actually take the plunge, Apple would have to fully implement Bluetooth for both calls and media. Not the crippled thing it is now.

It would also have to be offered on Sprint. Sprint seems to provide the best overall coverage in my area and I haven't had any issues with them in ten years.

That's completely understandable. I myself don't use Apple products. It's not that I hate them. I just never got into them.

i love Sprint too. $99 Unlimited Everything is great. so is coverage/service/technology.

Yes, pretty much all HTC Android devices, save the N1, have Sense on them.

I can't say they are necessarily better than other Android applications, however the EVO uses the Sense UI.

Also, you have to consider, that I am sure there are 3rd party apps you can download from Android Market.

Yep, The Hero has Sense.

Actually considering how data intensive the iPhone is, I don't think that would be a good idea for Sprint now. After the full roll out of 4G, well now that's another story entirely.

No iPhone for me. can't replace the battery and I use up batteries really fast. I am in sales and need GPS/Google maps a lot for my customer visits, plus I am always syncing my corp email and multiple personal email accounts, plus I usually talk about 5+ hours a day = needs 2 batteries and swapping of said batteries, regardless of what phone I have.

Ive been an iphone owner since day one. At this point, im really bored with and tired of the OS/Itunes. Im ready to play with and enjoy a new more open OS. The ONLY thing that is so very tempting about buying an IphoneHD will be the insanely awesome apps that it will have available to it versus android apps. Ive never owned an android device, but just from browsing the market it seems severely limited in the app dept, which in reality is one of the most important aspects to a phone. What good are all these awesome specs on the Evo if there are no apps to take full advantage?

Oh and the music player is awful on android compared to iphone, but thats not really a deal breaker to me since im sure thre has to be some sort of replacement if you root

For starters, I do not see how that article indicates that Sprint might get a iPhone.
Second, the EVO will still in my opinion be a better phone than the iPhone HD.
