Help Any way to change sound notifications for different apps?

When mail arrives, my phone alerts me with the Android whistle.

When CNN alerts are pushed to my screen....same whistle.

I want to change that. There is no option in the CNN app to change notification sound.

Is there an app or setting that allows you to assign specific alert sounds to apps that push notifications?

you can allways use third party apps. most of them have custom settings for changing led and sound. like k9 mail.

Yeah, CNN setting only has a box to check to send push notification but no choice in sound, so it uses the same sound the rest of the system is defaulted with.

I thought you just wanted to change the Notification sound not change the way the notifications work altogether

My default email app has a setting for the notification sound.
-Open Mail
-Go into Settings
-Click on your email address
-Scroll down to the "Notification settings" section
-The "Select Ringtone" option lets you pick the ringtone to use

GMail App has it too:
-Open Gmail
-Go into Settings
-Click your email address
-Second option is to turn on email notifications
-Once that is selected "Ringtone & vibrate" turns on below it.
-"Ringtone & vibrate" has the Ringtone option to pick the ringtone you want.

What he means is if you change the Gmail notification, it will be different to CNN because Gmail wont be using default.

If you want gmail to be whistle, change Gmail to whistle and default to whatever you want CNN to be

I am still on my first week with this phone so, certainly, there may tweaks I am not aware of.

The CNN news app uses the default sound. You can't assign it's own notification sound.

I am really enjoying NOTIFIERPRO. It allows me to customize alert sounds and sends notification banners to the home screen for just about any program I have.

With the S3 in my pocket, I rely on sounds to tell me exactly what is coming in.

Oh right. Yes so what I said before the edit applies. It was the "using Gmail"that threw me

I use LightFlow, it gives me diff. notification LEDs for diff. apps + allows me to choose a separate notification tone for every app

I've been using BeBuzz on my previous BlackBerry for years and now LightFlow and it never affected the battery

use it, it gives u the best of both worlds

notification LED for diff. apps / events and diff. sounds for every event easily configurable

EDIT: I jumped straight in and purchased the pro version. So far so good. Is there any way to make a notification flash different coloured LEDs?

I installed it, and it lets me give a notification sound to apps by checking them, but they are all the system default notification sound. It does not seem to have a way to specify a different sound for each app. What am I missing?

You can go into menu settings where you check off all the apps you want to be notified of. Click on the app you checked and there should be SOUND SETTINGS where you can change the default sound to whatever you would like.

It is the "ringtone" I want to change? Only available in the paid version. Not that I have an issue paying the mere pittance of the price, but I ganerally like to see software actually work. Still, for the price of tea with dinner, it isn't a bad risk. I'm splurging.

Yeah, I apologize. I am using Notifier Pro.

I am still rather new to Android so I am not certain of everything, but I would suspect that most programs that send out notifications allow you to go into their menu and change the sound. You might also be able to do it just from the SOUND configuration under Android's general settings.

Let me know how you make out. Very interested to see if you get it to work as you wish.

Looks like it will work. I have noticed that if I set the notification in Notifier Pro (& probably Plus), and have a notification in the object app, both sounds are played.

I'll report back after I work with this a bit.

Notifier Pro Plus (paid version, not Notifier Pro - free version) does allow you to pick any installed app and set a notification for it. If the app has it's own notification, it plays both, unless you turn off the app's notification. For apps that either have no notification, or do not allow you to change the notification tone, Notifier Pro Plus allows you to set any app with any notification you have available.

I have installed Zedge, which has TONS of free ringtones and notifications. However, it does not have some of the things that I wanted to be able to really customize the ringtones I wanted for certain people.

I have also installed Ringtone Maker. This little app allows me to take any sound file, edit it to only have the exact sounds I want, amplify it to be loud enough to be heard, and save it for access by an app or Notifier Plus Pro.

So, I have made a couple of notifications & ring tones that I really like. For example, when someone calls that is in my address book, it plays a few loud guitar riffs from a Chuck Berry tune. When my girlfriend calls, it plays the opening vocal from James Taylor's "Whenever I see your smiling face, I have to smile myself, because I love you!" When my ex-wife calls, it plays the Mission Impossible Theme. When my Doctors call, it plays a siren. My lawyer's calls are announced with the opening bars from Pink Floyd's "Money." Family calls are announced with the Pointer Sisters singing "We are family." My sms messages are announced with the whistle from the Old Spice commercial (downloaded from Zedge). Facebook messages have another whistle notification. Breaking News from CNN & USA Today are announced by a few notes from one of those "breaking news" tunes you hear on TV or the radio.

I have managed to set up all my communications so that I recognize the source without having to look at my phone, and THAT is exactly what I wanted. So, I heartily recommend Notifier Pro Plus as the path to setting a ready tone for any app, Zedge for downloading tons of ringtones and notifications, and Ringtone Maker for tweaking any sound file to fit the length and volume you want.
