Help MTP driver issue

Same for me.It's the one thing that really spoils what would otherwise be the best phone in the Universe. Someone in Samsung needs their head smacked.

Ignore my previous post. I just tried the simplest thing I could think of, and it WORKED!

Since nobody has asked I unplugged my GS3, turned off Windows Firewall, then plugged the phone in again. It connected INSTANTLY and I didn't get any message about drivers etc! After playing with it awhile to establish it was working properly I disconnected the phone and turned Windows Firewall back on again....it now connects as you'd expect it to, maybe 20-30 seconds. :smokingsomb:

Maybe whatever firewall or AV you are using then? I'm guessing that what have happened was the firewall was blocking the Driver for some reason. Once the Driver is through and installed it works correctly.

I have been trying to connect my GS3 to my computer for 2 weeks now an have failed miserably. Every time i connect it kies starts up and the MTP drivers start installing but always fail so the phone is definitely recognized. Im using a 32GB model and interestingly enough my brothers 16GB GS3 had no issues when i hooked it up to my computer, it is recognized and the MTP drivers installed for it. I have tried uninstalling kies, samsung drivers and MTP drivers from my computer and restarting and even reset my phone only to have the same results. I already have all my apps setup and i dont want to return it unless i really have to, can anybody help me figure this out?

Really weird, I tried everything ( including removing ALL usb drivers, reinstallations, restarts... reg clean.. and nothing worked ).. then I manually selected driver in devmgmt.msc to "Digital Camera" ( NOT the samsung driver option it was showing ) .. and it installed correctly.. and now I can open the camera from My Computer!

I don't get why it works using Camera (PTP) but not using Media Device (MPT)

Ok. After trying everything drivers related (uninstalled, kies installed, windows installed, bla bla), I finally saw people attributing MTP problems to the cable. So I swapped my el cheapo (dx.com) cable for my old HTC cable, and all works perfectly.

That wasnt the case for me since I was using the official Samsung cable , connected to a USB 3.0 port. Was the cheap cable USB 3 or 2? It is bizarre that there can be several different solutions to a similar problem!

For me, I got the USB connection working as follows:

1. Swapped the Samsung cable for a thicker, more solid cable (think it came from an old Sony Ericsson).

2. Installed latest drivers from KIES.

3. Made sure that I have unlocked the screen BEFORE I connect the phone to the PC. This makes sense from the security perspective because it doesn't make sense if the lock screen on your phone can be bypassed simply by plugging the phone into the PC.

BTW Kies also doesn't register a connection with my phone if the lock screen is on at the time I connect the phone to the PC.

4. Use the "Caffeine" app from Google Play. Caffeine keeps your phone awake when the app is enabled. I have discovered that the lock screen coming on may stuff up a USB connection.

I am not sure which of the above did the trick. I don't usually do item 4 (i.e. Caffeine) since item 3 seems more relevant to me getting things working.

Long time reader first time poster

I got a great deal upgrading from my S2 to an S3 so I jumped on it as I was happy with the S2 and looking forward to newer features

Got the phone

Plugged it in charged fully

Installed kies

Wtf MTP error??

After nearly 2 hours of installing/uninstalling kies, all access (from samsung website) and rebooting my phone multiple times with factory reset (i didnt even do anything with it yet i just opened it!) I finally stumbled upon something that worked

Go to microsoft website and find

Microsoft_User-Mode_Driver_Framework_Install-v1.0-WinXP (for windows XP)

There are newer versions, but once I installed this BAM everything worked

I was ready to return this phone before finding the Microsoft User Mode Driver Framework

I was finally able to get my MTP driver installed properly. I tried all of the tricks (uninstalling Samsung drivers, installing the latest, rebooting the computer, restarting the phone, etc>).

Ultimately, as soon as I plugged it into the BACK of my computer, it started to work and showed up in My Computer. When I had it plugged into a USB 3.0 slot on the front of my machine, it repeatedly failed. I am on Win 7 64 bit with a Galaxy SIII (Verizon).

When troubleshooting any sort of USB problem, your choice to try plugging directly into the motherboard ports on the back of your PC is a good choice. Lots of USB issues can be caused by case front ports or USB hubs. I think the reason is because some of those do not carry the full power supplied to the ports on the motherboard itself.

For me the problem was solved by using my PC's USB 2.0 port instead of the 3.0 port. Once I did that it all worked fine.

My PC has 9 USB ports, 3 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 which connect directly to the motherboard. I have tried 2 different stock GS3 cables and 3 cables from other phones on EVERY port. I uninstalled/reinstalled kies and the standalone drivers as well as all the USB host drivers on my PC yet nothing works. My PC installs every driver for my phone except the MTP one but it has no trouble with my brothers GS3. Everything else I've tried just leaves me back at square one.

Have you tried rebooting your GS3? I've seen times when I needed to do that with my GS3 and my Iconia A500 tablet to get their USB connections to work correctly. Is you GS3 running the stock ROM and Recovery?

i had this issue last night. i found 2 sets of instructions, but i don't know which one could have fixed it.

one guide- i forgot where i found this set of instructions, but i followed it to manually remove drivers from Device Manager (i'm using Windows 7 64-bit).

and the other guide said to power off the phone, plug it in to where you'll see the charging battery symbol, then turn it on.

after doing this, Windows started installing the drivers, and i was able to see my phone in MTP mode again.

I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S2. I can access the phone in MTP mode on my PC at home, which is Windows 7. What I can't do, is access it on my work PC, which is running XP3 Professional SP3. Everytime I get the "MTP Device Driver Failed" during installation. I've tried reinstalling Kies, installing the standalone Samsung USB driver, setting my phone to USB debugging mode, switching of the firewall during installation, applying the "Microsoft_User-Mode_Driver_Framework_Install-v1.0-WinXP" fix, all without success

Anybody got any more ideas ? I would appreciate it.

I have just upgraded to an S3 from an iPhone 4 yesterday. My S3 won't connect to any of 5 computers: My W7 64b laptop, not my work's W7 64gb desktop, not my Acer XP netbook or our older Vista desktops.

I bought the phone from Costco, and I might return for exchange if I can't get it to work.

These are some of the things I've tried:

1. Connect simply as the Samsung video shows. Plug it in and it's just supposed to connect. NOT!
2. Turn on the USB developer debugging.
3. Reboot the phone.
6. Hard reset the phone, erasing everything on it.
7. Find the appropriate Windows drivers at the Samsung website and install them.
8. Reboot the PC.
9. Tried connecting on another Windows 7 computer.
10. Began a root program install on my laptop which was recommended by another user here, but clicked to cancel before committing to actually starting the install. (Nothing was installed from the Root program)
11. Successfully connected and transferred files with Kies Air.
12. Downloaded and installed Kies from Samsung.
13. Ran the Kies connection diagnostic program.
14. I tried connecting with any of the 5 computers previously mentioned earlier.
15. Disabled Norton Antivirus firewall and ensured the Windows firewall is disabled.
16. Tried connecting the cable in safe mode on my main computer, the Win7 laptop.

I have a question for all of you having or who've had this problem.

It is my understanding that for those having this issue, you plug in the cable, Windows recognizes "something" is plugged in, tries to find and load the drivers and fails for some reason, or recognizes the S3 as a camera.

In my case I plug the cable in and ---nothing--- happens. There is no notification of anything in Windows and no connection notice in the S3.

Imagine plugging in a USB cable while nothing, no device at all is connected to the other end. Just an empty connector. Yea, just like that.

Well, actually something does happen. The phone beeps a chime and begins charging just as it would if connected to the wall/car charger. That's all.

Am I the only one who's PC acts as if nothing is connected to the other end of the cable? I'd try another cable but I don't have one.

^ mine was doing exactly that yesterday. check your Control Panel to make sure that "Samsung Drivers" (or something close to that name) is installed. then try the following:

Yep I tried rebooting the phone and my phone is 100% stock.
