Hi everyone. I was trying to root an inspire for somebody and ran into some problems. I don't have the phone on me at the moment so I can't give you all the info. All I can remember off the top of my head is that it was hboot 2.0.0.xxx

I can't remember the last numbers. I believe he has taken all OTA's so it is probably the most current hboot and radios.

I thought it would be simple. I unlocked HTC Dev. Easy enough. The problem is that I cannot boot into recovery. I have looked all over for a recovery that works and have tried 3 different ones. They flash fine but then sit on the white HTC screen when trying to boot into it.

Is there anyone out there that knows which recovery will work for sure? Or is there extra steps involved because he has updated too much? I'm not involved in the inspire forums and don't know much about the phone.

I thought I could just unlock, flash recovery, flash superuser patch and be done. He just wants to stay stock so thought it would be a breeze...

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I can link you a.recovery wen I.get.home in.a coupke hours :)

Thank you Scotty!!! You rock! Unfortunately I will have to dig deep for at least one of the links. I can name the ones I used to start.

4ext Recovery (obviously :p)

cwm-4.0.1.4-shooteru (from complete newbs guide gsm for 3vo)

recovery-clockwork-3.2.0.1-speedy (from some site I can't remember but was specifically for rooting the inspire)

That was it. Then he had to take his phone. Only had about a half hour or so to play with it.

here is a clockwork for ace: cwm-5.0.2.7-ace.zip

and ext 4: PD98IMG_ace_recovery_ext_4.zip

ext 4 is a very nice touch recovery, and what i personally use on my inspire.

current software build number for the att inspire is 2.47.502.7. htcdev hboot for that is 0.85.0024,and changes your main version to 2.52.0.0.

as you know, htcdev has its limitations, make sure your friend understands that if he wants to flash roms(have him read this: http://androidforums.com/rezound-all-things-root/587430-s-want-flash-roms-read.html)

i would pretty strongly recomend to give up on htcdev, and either manually,or using the "AAHK",downgrade and s-off/superCID. that will make the phone much more fun to own and flash.

if you just want to root the stock rom,you can use superuser 3.0.7 or [29.08.2012] SuperSU v0.96 - xda-developers

i personally like superSU but either will root gingerbread just fine :)

thank you scotty! I use 4ext recovery as well. I love it! So the phone doesn't have to be s-off to use the PD86IMG.zip method? For some reason I thought you had to be to flash recovery that way. I have been wanting to ask this question for awhile but didn't want to start a whole thread just for that.... Thank you very much for the links!!!

He is not phone savvy. He doesn't want to flash or do anything. I told him about free wireless tether which he uses the tether a lot so he wants it basically just for that...

Well unfortunately I won't be able to do this until tomorrow afternoon. Was looking forward to getting it done but he has to leave in 15 minutes so that doesn't leave enough time for the nandroid backup. I will post my results tomorrow afternoon!!! Thanks a lot Scotty

It was the first one I tried!! Unfortunately it didn't work. I will try the PD86IMG.zip method and see if it works better..

But just to clarify, you don't have to be s-off to flash that way?

Told you 4EXT is the way to go. And I also figured that downgrading would be the best way to go on the inspire, but if he only cares about tethering, then it is not needed. ;)

there are a couple of reasons why it didnt flash:
1)it needs to be an inspire specific image
2)it needs to be named PD98IMG
3)the android info document may not have had the correct info.

But just to clarify, you don't have to be s-off to flash that way?

technically, you can be s-on and flash PxxxIMG files. if the file is a full, signed by htc ruu,the bootloader will need to be locked or relocked

to flash unsigned files, the bootloader must be unlocked, however, you are limited to boot, system, and recovery images. no radios,no bootloaders,no splash images,no downgrading firmware without trickery(or at all on newer phones )

with an s-on,unlocked hboot, the text on the android info document is now important. it must contain a version that is the same as the main version on the phone or newer.

htcdev,honestly,is a huge PITA.

i would recomend you use the fastboot flash command to install the recovery,so the android info document does not come into play.

unzip one of my downloads, and put the image into your adb/fastboot folder. plug in,enable usb debug, disable fastboot. then:

adb devices (should return serial number)

adb reboot bootloader (will take you to fastboot)

fastboot devices (should return serial number)

then flsh the recovery with this:

fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img (where recoveryname is the name of the image inside the folder)

example,image named ace_ext_4_recovery:
fastboot flash recovery ace_ext_4_recovery.img

after it flashes, reboot the phone with
fastboot reboot

you can then enter recovery thru
adb reboot recovery

or thru any other means that youre used to. just make sure he realizes this permantly installed recovery is worthless for flashing roms. :)

I was using the fastboot flash but I must not have had a version meant for the inspire. I will extract that 4EXT img and try flashing it this afternoon when I have the phone back. The resources seem limited for the inspire. I literally looked all over and couldn't find a recovery that would work.

How do you guys find all these versions of 4EXT? Twrp hosts their own recoveries on their website. I've looked around for 4EXT recoveries and had no luck. DonB pointed me to one yesterday but for the Evo.

Anyway thanks so much for all the great information. I will let you know how it goes.

Well, the 4ext recovery you gave me booted! I'm making a nandroid backup now so it should be smooth sailing from here. Thanks again! I'll let you know if for some reason there is a problem flashing the supersu patch but I don't think there should be!

ETA: Yep all finished. Wifi tether is good to go!

The resources seem limited for the inspire.
thats what i thot when i first got my inspire. however after some research and figuring out that the desire HD is almost exactly the same device, there are suddenly alot of resources available.

the desire HD is a world wide GSM phone, and is used in alot of regions by different carriers with branded and unbranded roms. heres a few different RUUs,all of wich will work onthe inspire/DHD as long as the device is superCIDed and s-off: FileFactory Folder View - Ace

you can also look thru the DHD forum here(where youll see posts from me ;)) and on xda for roms.

as long as you do not tryand mix and match radios and hboots, you can basically treat the inspire like a DHD,for which there is an abundance of roms, recoveries, etc. i am currently running unofficial cm10 on my inspire(for the DHD)

since the useage is so broad, there are still alot of grreat devs in the DHD forums, and they are a devoted bunch! they were one of the firs ones to get jellybean up and running after its release. my inspire was actually running JB before my sensation!

there are a bunch of good roms,no matter what your preference. GB,ICS,JB,sense 3.6,sense 4.0,or AOSP.

my inspire is actually my second favorite phone(right behind the sensation)

lol if we told you wed have to kill you

actually i have no idea where i initially got it. i remeber installing a rom that for some reason automatically installed it  at that point,i may have pulled the image out of a nandroid,or i may have found a download on xda somewhere. i have the link i gave you because i packed up the image and uploaded it :D anymore i really hate to give out links i dont have control of. it causes alot of fustrations down the line when folks find older threads in searches and the links have disapeared

the clockwork i linked,i remember stealing from the AAHK. if you instal it youll even see the AAHK logo in the background :)
