"OMG, you started ANOTHER 2.1 thread?!?! Epic FAILz!!!!"

I just feel like venting about this... Please take the time to read it and let me know if you agree or disagree. Civil responses only please ;)

I've seen so many people say stuff like similar to this thread title, and I personally think it's getting ridiculous. This is one bandwagon that just doesn't make sense to me. No one ever complained about this before... "OMG another 1.5 thread???" No, of course not, because there are MANY things to discuss about it. Trying to restrict everyone to having 1 or 2 threads devoted to the 2.1 update is just absurd. Using the same thought process that these types posts portray, then the Eris forum should've just been it's own single thread to begin with, amirite?

People create new threads to ask questions, discuss certain topics, etc, and the 2.1 update is a VERY BROAD topic. Trying to navigate the hundreds of pages in those threads is just absurd.

I personally LIKE when threads are about a single topic. It makes the forums much easier to navigate, especially for people who don't live and breathe this site. Especially when people include 2.1 in their topic, it makes it very easy to pick out interesting threads. I come on every now and then to read some stuff, and those ridiculously long threads are just completely useless to me. The topics change so often and there are so many useless posts that it's nearly impossible to find anything meaningful without spending hours wading through all of the crap. Yes, "use the search" will be touted by many, but what if I don't know what I'm searching for? I often just scroll through the thread titles and come across an interesting topic that I might not have thought of before. This can't happen within a single 2.1 thread, because there is nothing to separate the topics of discussion.

Now, if 2.1 were its own sub-forum (like root), that might be helpful... but the people who bash people for not posting in the giant 2.1 threads are just not being helpful at all, and just come across as arrogant know-it-alls.

Thanks for reading. Thoughts/comments?

Repetitive threads are a completely different issue... Those are actually shown to you while you are making a thread. But it's the people who start new threads about something that might've been mentioned in the giant thread, or maybe something slightly different, or still had a question about it... stuff like that.

That being said, I agree that there is no reason to keep starting threads about when the 2.1 update will be released... those should just stick in one thread. But that should be it.

For example, when the 2.1 originally leaked, it was posted in the middle of that giant thread. I didn't find out until the next day, and I had to go back over a dozen pages to find the link. That should've been its own thread (I believe someone did finally do that). Same with talking about all of the "changes" and what's different and stuff...

I'm just saying it's nice to have everything neatly organized, instead of having it all piled up in one place ;)

Imagine if your computer didn't have ANY directories/folders, and EVERY SINGLE ONE of your files was just in your root C: drive. Now you want to go look for something specific, or find something you may have forgotten the name of... Good Luck! That's how I feel about the 2.1 topic in general... I've been enjoying the multiple threads about different topics, because it feels more organized to me, that's all :D

It's not everyone's fault that Google has updated their OS at an unprecedented pace. This thread should probably have a sub forum for those who want to talk about 2.1 versus everyday questions.

Some people freak out but they are gonna freak out anyway because they love to be an ass in a virtual world. For the rest of us, we only get annoyed when a new person signs up and comes running in with some news as if they just discovered America. Even then, many of us simply don't open the thread. That solves an issue right there. Don't open it and you won't be bothered by it.

There are two types of threads that absolutely piss me off. 1)When a person posts an unrelated topic to bait people into their thread. 2) When people start a thread stating that they have 2.1 in order to be funny. If someone is telling the truth, it is funny because their thread will go on for about a page or so before people realize that they are the real deal.

Forums live and die based on people posting threads and others replying to those threads. Have you ever been to a forum where nobody posts? You don't stay too long do you?

I can understand people running 1.5 getting a little frustrated with all the 2.1 talk that is going on right now. However, dividing this forum and making a 2.1 sub forum doesn't make any sense. We will all be on 2.1 eventually and the forum will go back to normal. At that point the threads about 2.5 or 3.0 will start up too. The root subforum makes sense because there are plenty of people that will never root their phone, but eventually even Frisco will have to install 2.1 or go crazy from the reminder screen.

Everyone that is getting upset about new 2.1 threads, repeat threads, zombie threads or the like may just want to find a new forum to visit. It isn't going to stop and things aren't going to change. Just deal with it and move on.

With all that said, the only threads that really annoy me are the "When are we getting OTA?" threads. Those are just silly.

When are we getting 2.5 OTA? I spoke to a Verizon guy and he said they will be rolling it out very soon now.

Interesting note on that. It appears that Google is trying to avoid future fragmentation by separating the OS into individual downloadable parts from the market. This is supposed to help keep everyone running the latest and greatest OS all the time. Kind of what they have done with Maps. When they update it, you just install the update for that single part. If it has problems, then you don't have to update.

Pretty ingenious if you ask me.

I thought of the same thing regarding the sub-forum being pointless after the update, but really that was my whole point... All 2.1-related discussion doesn't need to be consolidated into a single area, because it's no different than people posting questions about 1.5-related stuff. I just welcome the separated topics ;)

You are right, it won't stop though... It is just annoying to see people say "why didn't you post this question in the 2.1 thread?" and stuff. Why? Because it'll be nearly impossible to locate the answer in the middle of the multiple conversations going on...

I don't even know why I feel so defensive, since this hasn't even happened to me, haha... I just like being able to quickly browse information

Anyway, OTD you are one of the most helpful people on here... I wish more people were! :p

As annoying as the 2.1 threads can get (either in the form of a billion related threads, or as a set of "megathreads"), this is Droid Eris forum, and 2.1 is kind of the biggest thing happening with the device, so I don't think the threads need to be filtered or moved.

In general, what would be nice (as others have mentioned) is if folks took a second to decide whether their topic is different or significant enough to warrant an entirely new conversation, and then either start a new thread or add to an existing one as appropriate.

It would also be nice if people would exercise some self-restraint and not make comments that serve no other purpose than to whine, or to back off of a position once it's clear that the rest of the world disagrees with what they think.

But neither of those is realistic. That is one of the inherant downsides to an open forum like this - but that very openness is what allows the forum to succeed.

I think everyone is just tired of the new users making threads that ask questions that have already been answered elsewhere, but I think the problem is when someone just makes fun of them or threatens them for crying out loud, instead of just linking them to the thread (or post) where it was answered. OR, people just post for the heck of it without really answering the OP's question, if that's the case, just don't post at all, because it only adds to the mess :)

I agree 100%.

I agree to an extent... Wading through an endless thread can be difficult when looking for a specific answer, but I do think people should search before they post. I was more focused on the single-thread idea being useless to casual forum-goers. I definitely agree about the useless posts though...

Yeah, we need more threads talking about too many threads.

I think I'll start a thread thread; we'll talk about threads.. what they are, what we do with them, how we feel about them, where they go at night, their mating habits, and most importantly, how long they live.

Too many threads??? No, no, no... my whole point was that we need MORE specific threads, lol... rather than big generic threads that cover 20 different topics ;)

Not to stoke the fire, but they are going nuts over in the Moto Droid section as it looks like the OTA has started and some people are getting the update pushed now...

Yeah, there are a couple of THREADS talking about it here in the Eris area too.

Older THREADS, but still alive THREADS.

lol, etc.

You're welcome.

"I feel like venting" is a great THREAD beginning and quite worth of the very best constructive help available.

It is also sort of a disclaimer so you know what the post will be like. I feel that I had some valid points, and it seems that some have agreed as well as made other valid points. If you have no interest in this topic, then posting (and revisiting) is unnecessary, and is nothing more than trolling ;)

You're that guy who comes into an elevator and releases intestinal gasses then smiles, aren't you.

And stop winking at me, it's almost as bad as the leg-humping thing that another guy in here does whenever he's busted.

I would gladly release flatulence in the direction of an elitist such as yourself. No one asked you to come in here and act all high-and-mighty, whether you agree with the topic or not. If you have nothing positive to contribute to a thread, don't bother posting. People like you are the ones who drive away other forum users, as described here: http://androidforums.com/site-updates-announcements/43824-zero-tolerance-policy-all-members-read.html

You've clearly got issues that go beyond any behavior of your cell phone. You're a sick puppy, ok.

Welcome yourself to the ignore bin.

When was my cell phone even mentioned? But harassing me unnecessarily, then placing me on ignore (if that even happened) is interesting though... Sounds good to me.

Maybe someone else actually has something worthwhile to contribute, unlike Frisco :)

I agree completely with the subforum for 2.1.

However, trying to stop repetitive threads and saying how much you hate them is like complaining about people who just hold up traffic in the left lane on the highway. They're not going away.

Hey the left lane is for traveling too .. I pass everybody! :p

I hate when people go to pass from the right lane infront of me doing 55, besides that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. So logically the people that travel in just the right to pass in the left are wasting more gas by swerving in and out of lanes  You guys just compensate for going so slow.
