Apple is screwed... lol

If the iPhone 5 used Andriod I would buy one. :p

They've finally gone for a more widescreen friendly screen ratio and increased the screen size.

It appears to have the same GPU or simalar performance to the iPad (much faster than anything in any Android device) and everyone seems to agree that it's using an Cortex A15 Dual Core CPU(Simalar or better performance to the S4)(unconfirmed!!).

Add to that it's thinner and lighter, what your left with is a very good phone, that runs iOS.

So they are far from screwed. :(

If I were an Apple fan the biggest disappointment for me would be that the display is not 720p!!! That is just poor.

I imagine this iPhone release is a big relief for Android fans who have had to put up with iPhone users in the past upstaging them with the previously superior specs

This time Apple didn't even catch up, let alone overtake.

Why does is matter if it's HD or not? the dpi is still higher than Android phones because it's a 4" screen and not a 4.5" or 4.8" screen. It will still look just as good.

But the specs are better than most Android phones, GPU that's twice as fast as anything on Android and they are first with the new Cortex A15 while most Android phones are using Quad Core Cortex A9.

The only CPU we have simalar is Qualcomms Snapdragon S4., however Adreno 225 is very poor compared to the latest from PowerVR.

As long as my S3 is running smooth with no hitches then what does it matter if the iPhone 5 has a "better" GPU. I don't need my S3 to be "twice as fast" as it's fast enough already. I love the HD screen on the S3, the i5 doesn't have a HD screen and it won't look "just as good". Some things like photos may look better on the i5 but things like HD videos will definitely be better to view on the S3.

what we also have to realise that some people compare the i5 to american s3's which are dualcore snapdraggons with quadcore gpu

this in no way is the same comparision to the internationals quadcore samsung exynos cpu and quadcore mali gpu @ 1.4-6 ghz
the a6 is based on samsungs old quad technology lol
all the features of i5 are in the s3

Unless "screwed" is the new meaning for breaking sales records, it would seem to consumers the OP will be very wrong.

I have the GS3 and appreciate the perspective, but Apple's release of the 5 will if anything, screw some of the competition.

Correct - Expect record sales and leaving all other phones in the dust! The Apple juggernaut is far from over!!

There’s some truth to this but I don't think it's fair to generalise all Apple users like this. If the iPhone 5 was underspeced you can guarantee sites would be slamming it by now and more iPhone users would be jumping ship but that's not going to happen because unfortunately it's quite good.

Truth is regardless of whether you are an Apple fan or not this is a very good phone

it is a very good phone, for appleheads. for droidheads, been there done that.

8 megapixel cameras - had that
4 inch screens - had that
panoramic view - had that
turn by turn navigation - had that
8 hours talk time on LTE - had that

build quality is totally subjective. some need a phone to be metal and some dont care. cosmetic preference. those aluminum backplates for iphones get scratched all to hell. you drop either of these phones and they're gonna break easily as they're both pretty thin.

the iphone will have a better camera as always and the screen quality will even out due to screen size. bottomline android has nothing to worry about here other than the fact that the majority of iphone users are going to stay loyal to the brand.

also, to those who comment on how android releases 100s of phones while apple puts out 1.

android is an OS, not a phone manufacturer. iOS could be put on any phone, they just choose to remain in house. apple puts out one high end device and thats it while other companies make high end, mid-grade, and entry level devices. its always been about choice.

remember, the galaxy s2 was top seller in 2011 and named best smartphone of that year and the S3 is currently the top seller this year. the i5 will probably top it but we'll see.

I watched CNET's and Engadgets live blogs yesterday and I've since, seen some video from the event and to be quite frank - I'm not trying to rag on Apple or anything - it was very ho-hum. I was expecting to see something new in terms of the iPhone but I didn't really get that "holy crap, Apple's done it again" feeling at anytime over the course of the conference. I actually believe that the audience thought the same thing to, although you'll be hard pressed to find any respectable tech journalist say so.

I think the biggest mistake that Apple made was in releasing the iPhone so far from it comparable Android competitors, I'm not talking about only the S3 but other phones coming out: like the new Droid Razr, Atrix, Optimus, the SG Note 2, Xeperia, etc. With so many choices out there for the consumer, Apple has to always be ahead of the curve ball - so to speak - in terms of new features for their already existing products; which is another thing that Apple has yet to do.

Granted, they make great products but, you can only update/upgrade/redesign an already existing product so much before it becomes unrecognizable - as the new nano and iPod demonstrate (which btw, i did like). This is the antithesis of the Android OS, the same OS on different platforms, the same OS with different phones and different manufacture's skins (like HTC and Sammy), the same OS in a variety of different flavors. Let's see what Apple has in store for the iPad.

.

I hear this all the time from iphone owners, and I argue what's the point? It really doesn't matter that Apple made the phone durable when you can't even replace the battery in the thing on your own.

I think if anything the iphone has an inefficient design in that, from a hardware perspective, it's made to last many years, but ultimately users are still limited by the battery. And the battery, factoring in heat, humidity and usage will only give you realistically 1-3 years of full performance use. So when I hear Apple touting how green the iphone is, I have to laugh, because realistically, if they want to head down THAT road, the phone COULD use much less material and still serve it's purpose.

I'm reading the live blog for the iPhone 5 announcement right now and can't believe how spot-on predictable and non-innovative this phone is turning out to be.

I have a feeling this thing is going to turn away a lot of iPhone users... Samsung better plan on ramping up production. :D

You are funny... I want a phone that works all the time. I don't want to try and fix the small glitches all the time. I've had both platforms and for me iOS is better. Just look at GS3 forum. You can't even copy'n'paste without the GS3 crashing. Now that is lame. I like this from the article,"The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a ton of really neat, innovative new features, but it also has far more trip-ups, which make for a less smooth experience overall." For each his own, but I don't like to live in denial.

Based on what?

The iPhone 5 should perform well, but there's nothing that says anything about performance like that of an iPad. The iPhone is adding in so many other power-intensive features like LTE, they are far more focused on making sure the iPhone can last the whole day than making performance the top priority. The iPad doesn't have that problem - it has a large battery and the iPad had different priorities than the iPhone.

As far as I saw, Apple made no mention of the power increase of the A6, and when has Apple ever not trumpeted features of their products? They always hype performance using vague information (rarely do the actual state chip speed, memory, etc) to enhance the image of their products. They didn’t do that with the A6.

edit: just ran across an article that follows that same line of thinking, but far more convincing than anything I could say: http://www.extremetech.com/mobile/136085-whats-inside-the-iphone-5s-a6-soc

I think you're correct... to a degree. At some point though, even loyal iPhone owners are going to want something fresh. I mean, the iphone originally attracted boat loads of people BECAUSE it was fresh and new. Those same people now, call them the 'independent voters' of the phone world, are more than likely a little bored, and looking for a substantial update to justify the cost of upgrading.

I mean really, the iPhone pretty much looks and "feels" the same way it did in 2007.

Android, although sucky in 2008, adapted to what customers wanted, and is now something that is genuinely desirable. This is really the difference between iPhone and Android. With Android, customer wants drive design. With iPhone, you are told whats cool and necessary.

It amazes me that they can say things like, we have this adapter for $39 or $29, either way a rip off, and the crowd cheers. They are selling people product. What are they cheering about? If I go to my corner store and they say, Alex, check it out, we now carry Coca Cola!!! I wouldn't stand up and clap. If they said, just look at this beautiful soda can. We engineered it to... Stop. I don't care.

I don't even want to count how many times they say "Amazing".

"Apple loves creating music products." - Oh no, you love selling music products because it's so profitable!

Seriously, who here likes iTunes? Anyone? It is the worst music app in the world.

First of all, if you're going to start an arguement, don't use unsubstantiated 'blanket' statements to defend your point.

You're implying that all GS3's have this copy and paste problem, where I have never even heard of or experienced it myself.

You can read articles all you want to justify your love for iOS, but in the end, people have spoken, and the GS3 is a widely popular phone for good reason - It's arguably the best thing avalable on the market right now.

And if you want to go down the road of phone quirkiness, how about all of the pictures I tried sending from my iPhone 4s (when I had it) to the computer becoming corrupted. This is a known, and in my opinion, huge bug with the "rock solid" iOS... it corrupts camera images when sending them to PC, virtually rendering the camera on the phones useless (unless of course you wanted to email all of them to yourself...).

Or how about about all of the, anti-competitive DRM protected content on the itunes store? Try switching devices later to something non-Apple and you will find yourself at an dead end. All of that media you paid good money for rendered useless.

You can't fool me on iOS... I owned iPhones since they initially launched in 2007. I just recently switched sides and have nothing but positive feelings for Android. It's simply a better OS all around. Apple is the king of hype.. they are masters at marketing and convincing people that their products are superior. It's not until you see the other side that you realize it's all just corporate propoganda.

First, screen resolution is ppi, not dpi. Second, the iPhone 5 has a slightly higher resolution. The iPhone 5 is at 326 ppi and the S3 is 306 ppi. You probably can't tell the difference between the two when it comes to resolution, but the S3 screen is MUCH bigger.
