Help Galaxy S3 crashing when copying text to clipboard

Hi All-

I jumped over here from XDA, when I noted the following post"

"The guys over at phandroid found a solution that doesn't require factory reset

http://androidforums.com/samsung-gal...clipboard.html"

However, it appears that the only solution that I've seen here that doesn't require a factory reset is only for rooted phones. Am I correct?

I've had my S3 (SGH-I747) since July & had to go through one factory reset already. While I use a couple of backup apps (best is MyBackup Pro) that did a pretty nice job of restoring everything, it still is a bit of a pain.

Thanks!

Yes, your phone must be rooted, and although I was anxious about rooting my phone (I've never done it before), the process is EXTREMELY simple if you follow the guide on the site galaxys3root (I'm a new user and can't post links yet, otherwise I'd be able to give you exact links to the places I'm talking about). There's a page there with a video that is a fail-proof/noob-proof way to root your phone. After that, it's a simple thing to be able to fix the copy/paste issue. There are also instructions on that site for how to unroot your phone if you want to do so (but idk why you would unless returning it for warranty reasons). It's better than doing a factory reset and then probably having to do it again a little while later if the same issue happens. MAKE SURE TO NOT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL VERSION IF YOU HAVE A U.S. VERSION AND VICE VERSA.

Thanks for the feedback but I simply don't want to root my phone.

Go to /data/clipboard and delete everything in the clipboard directory as mentioned above.

Then, go to Settings/Application Management/All, scroll down until you find TestService and clear its data.

Reboot. If you do not reboot copy/paste will not function. I do not think you need to fix permissions, and I was able to apply the fix without that step (which is the one that really needs CWM).

Thanks a lot, this worked for me. The TestService cache was already empty so all I had to do was delete /data/clipboard/* and reboot.

Am I correct in presuming that your phone is rooted?

Regardless, I followed the same steps on my non-rooted phone & found no data in \data\clipboard, & further, TestServices contained no data at all!

Suggestions, comments, ideas, etc.?

Thanks.

Although there is a "data" folder in your file explorer program, it is not the same "data" folder he's referring to. The "data" folder he's referring to is located in the root folder, which you do not have access to if you're not rooted.

Understood. I figured that out while perusing the other posts here.

PS: As an FYI to the Admin, there is a totally different thread here discussing the same topic, "Serious fault with S3- Copy and Paste function - (No non root fix)" Maybe they could be consolidated into one?

Please, would every single person that has this issue please report it to Samsung? They will do nothing about it unless each and every one of you reports it, insisting that a factory reset is not an option. I have called and gone through the issue patiently and politely with 3 techs during the call until the last one said he was filing a report for the engineers.
