My wife was complaining about the slow Eris

On 1.5, it was slow as molasses. I updated her to the latest 2.1 leak, and it got better, but still really slow compared to her iPhone she was accustomed to. Finally, I turned off Sense and gave her the vanilla Android experience...and she is much happier. I wish there was a way to overclock the Eris like there is the Droid. It's really not making a good first impression on her as an iPhone replacement :(

So, when you turned off the Sense UI, I'm just curious if in the 2.1 leak are there 5 homescreens panels or just 3?

transitions between home screens, dialing on the phone app was obnoxiously slow. The eris seems to be good at most things, but definitely not at being a phone.
Transitions between home screens is not phone usage. But I'd be willing to wager that if you removed all the apps you have downloaded and really just wanted to use it as a phone, you'd be happy. But then again, why get an Android device if you only wanted a phone. Get an LG something or other for free and then you have only a phone. Just curious, why did she replace the iPhone?

Sorry, I didn't state that very well. Those were two separate statements. Transitions between screens AND using the phone app itself were very laggy. Saying that I should get her a "feature phone" if she wants to use it as a phone is ridiculous. The Eris is a smartPHONE...it should do voice calls well. On the stock 1.5 image, unfortunately, that is probably what it's worst at. With 2.1 installed, it got better. With Sense disabled, it's MUCH better. Also, I should point out that 1.5 was God-awful slow before we even installed any apps other than what came on the stock image.

We got rid of our iPhones because AT&T's network was garbage, and I disliked the closed nature of the iPhone platform.

She's fairly happy with the Eris now that I've stripped out all the eye candy. It runs much smoother. That said, I think it's pretty lame for VZW to put out a "smartphone" that hardly works as a phone. I know that complaint is not isolated to us; I see people all over the place complaining of the same. I'm hoping a better option without a slide out keyboard comes before the 8th, which is when our 30 day buyer's remorse period expires.

Excellent reason to ditch ATT. I had it way back when and it stunk. Glad it's running smoother for her too. But I do take exception with the statement that it hardly works as a phone. That is simply not true. Nor do I see people complaining "all over the place" about that either. But if she's not happy with it then you probably should switch it out, IMO.

Clear the cache in apps

First check how much free memory there is

Settings > SD card & phone storage
Look at the very bottom and see how much Available space there is in Internal phone storage

Then do this to clear cache

Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Menu > Sort by Size

Click on the apps and clear the cache.

Hope this helps.
