Why is it so hard for Android and iPhone fans to have a respectful discussion?

There are lots of articles these days talking about the iPhone 5, and comparing it to the Samsung Galaxy S3. Many of these articles allow posts/discussion by tech fans.

Inevitably, the discussion degenerates into an elementary school fight (my apologies to elementary schools). Some examples from an Engadget article today re: 2 million iPhone 5 sales in 24 hours:

iPhone 5 pre-orders crack 2 million in first 24 hours -- Engadget

From Android fans:

More proof that you can put the apple logo on any Piece'o shit and people will buy it.

They could just keep selling the 4s if they run out of stock, no one will notice the difference.

These are probably the same people that elected bush twice into office...

Wait until 2013... The Iphone 5S will include NFC... Then the Isheep will "baaa" about how revolutionary it is...

The iPhone may be made of Aluminum, Glass and the tears of the Chinese workers that died making it but even the SGS3 with its POLYCARBONATE (not plastic) construction can take more than the iPhone. The iPhone will shatter into a million pieces with a small drop while the SGS3 will just have a small scuff mark

From iPhone fans:

iPhone > Nokia > Land phone > Typewriter > 2 cans and a string > Message in a bottle > Pigeon with a note > Android..

Breaking FanDroid News: Samesong has just announced it will reveal the S4 in February, promises to copy as much of the iPhone 5 as it can before release!

Some people feel the need to justify their purchase of a product by putting every other device on the market down. We have it with Android vs Android where people will tell you that your phone in inferior to their phone because of XYZ. It happens with iPhone users when they talk about how much better this year is vs last year. You even see it with carrier discussions where company A is horrible and evil so you should use company B.

With some, they believe that using a device makes them a spokesperson for the company that makes it.

Some people are just doing some goodhearted ribbing or joking around. We do it here a lot when we joke about Apple suing someone for something silly. Most of the time this is meant to get a laugh, but it only takes one person that is too serious reading it for the joke to sour quickly.

With some, it is just gang mentality that one side is red and the other blue. Since they bought something from the red company they must now hate the blue company.

The truth is that people do it for their own reasons and most of them don't make a lot of sense. There are those that can argue the merits of any device and those that have solid reasons for disliking one brand or another. As others have said in other threads, this happens with everything from cars to brands of coffee. Once some make a decision on which is best for them there is no changing their mind or attitude about it.

Because the few of us that are objective about technology and would like to discuss pro's and con's are drowned out by fanboys and fangirls from both sides.

True enough.

Mention anything on any forum and it will either rule, suck, be out dated, on the leading edge of the tech curve, to bright, not bright enough, require jailbreaking or rooting, (or perfect as it) be over priced, or free; not understanding that all free phones cost you 500.00 or more by the time you are done.

And on and on.

Best ball teams, best golfers, the weather, God, politics, any product spelled with two consecutive consonants, religion in general and Scientologists. Did I mention Obama, Regan, Limbaugh, Bush, Carter and the War of 1812 and who started it? For the record, it must have been Regan's great grandfather.

Apple sucks, Apple rules. Microsoft sucks or Microsoft rules. Linux is too hard to learn or it is easy peasy and anyone who says different is aan abject moron. Everyone is right and everyone is wrong and a few do not care, but we do not listen to them.

Mention the new Regan Technologies 4G Tablet and someone will pick out the word "Regan" and the tablet talk disappears when someone discusses politics. If Apple develops a folding tablet with a high def screen, five hundred gigs of memory and it farts lilac scented farts in stereo with a 5D display that lets you view future events, it will suck or Apple stole the idea from Android or the Android version set to arrive in 2032 will automatically be better.

I see the same discussion/arguments on motorcycle forums, pen forums, camera forums, banjo forums and plastics forums for God's sake. Then there are the real writers vs self-publishers arguments. On guitar forums, the discussions often turn to which type of guitar is best and often no resolution in sight and fights break out.

For the record, I say al Les Paul Custom, a Gibson ES-335 Fat Neck, Guild, Hofner Verithin, a Gibson Birdland or a Broadcaster feeding one of Marshall's JVM Series Amps or some nice vintage Marshall Stack.

Not to mention, which Star Wars movie was/is the best and who the greatest crooner was. For the record, it was Frank, but Michael Buble comes up a close second. Some hate Frank and others argue he was neck deep in the mob. Some think Buble is useless no-talent and I absolutely disagree. Then someone says something OT and the topis goes sour.

I wont even mention Rap.

We will never win, so the best strategy is to avoid playing the game altogether.

I even followed a discussion about if Stewie can really talk or if only Brian can hear him. Just today, I tried in vain to convince someone that that Vespas are the best scooters going and anything made by Indian is cooler than any Japanese bike, but that might just be me.

And on and on.

It will never end until you leave the net alone. Eventually, all discussions left unmoderated will end with someone invoking Hitler or Martha Stewart.

People "prove" their point with copy from some web site they agree with and they post it not understanding what they posted. They will defend their POV until hell is frozen over.

I say life is too short.

Yeah, and where is Morse code, smoke signals, and sign language?! Only an Apple fan would put forward such an incomplete list, kind of like the incomplete features of the iPhone (cough cough NFC). ;)

My friend signs. Say, you forgot semiphore flags and that big round blinky light thing you see on ships at sea. I still have some Teletype stuff that works.

Morse Code is very much alive and well. Lots of proud hams sending messages at amazing rates. Tens of thousands of hams still use it and having a "solid fist" is a serious pursuit and an accomplishment.

You try using a Vibroplex bug without stumbling.:D

Sure, you can send a text message, but try a QSO with someone on some far off island at 30 WPM.

BTW: if you think iPhones are costly for communicating, try an Icom IC-R9500. :D Best of all, Apple has not sued Icom. Yet. Although the corners are rounded.

This part was kinda funny though.

You forgot pneumatic tube networks that were once widely used. The old tubes still exist on some older building in SLC. My mother use to send Dictaphone belts in those tubes. Not sure where that system fits in however.

I see it now . . . all of you firing up Wikepedia to see WTH I am talking about.
