Help No internet while making phone calls?

So I'm at work (I'm in the Army), and someone who recently got a Droid was asking about not being able to browse the web while in the middle of a phone call. Someone else who had an iPhone said they could do this. But the person with the Droid tested it, made a phone call and was not able to bring the browser up. What gives?

Droid = cdma
Iphone = gsm

cdma does not support the technology to do voice and data like gsm does. hence the iphone being able to talk and surf. it is on a gsm network whether it be native at&t or unlocked for other gsm carriers.

Coincidentally I was looking for stuff online explaining this today when I realized I couldn't do anything internet related while I was on a call. (It also made me remember those at&t commercials talking about they let users internet +call and other carriers don't).

Sucks if you ask me. Other people don't think its a big deal but id like to check on stuff/email while I'm on the phone. (I was able to with my crappy at&t xenon back then).

Anybody that's knowledgeable about the difference between the networks know if sprint could possibly have a network or upgrade their network(?) to allow call + internet?

Yea, I read somewhere that the evo may be able to do this with 4G, but maybe not? Either way I've got wifi at school and work and I just set up my linksys again at home so my internet while on a call needs will be fine till something, if anything happens in the future with sprints network.

Here's the thing. 99% of people don't even use this, have you really had a need for this?

It used to be even worse that this. When using 1xRTT instead of EV-DO, you won't even have your phone ring when you were using data. This still exists in rural areas with no 3G service on CDMA systems. This was quite a big problem with even the older Blackberry devices. It's not even that long ago - maybe 5 years.

As unpractical as it sounds. I do use this feature a lot on my phone *via wifi* of course. For example my friend and I are planning on being roomates a few months from now while in school and he called me to get the link to "specific" things, but they were booked marked in my phone so I copy pasted the links and text them to him so he can pull them up on his end.

True not MANY people use this feature but it does prove handy when need be. $.02's

I agree that this is a mandatory service...

I mean how else can I be driving down the road using my GPS while on the phone talking to someone getting the movie times and locations of the theaters while using Nuance to translate my text messages and emails...

My gosh people, first we bash them for having a crappy network, then when something like AT&T is crippled by devices that do exactly what you say, we get pissed for not having that capability? Can't win, can they...

I like paying attention to the people I'm talking to on the phone. I have no need for data access while on the phone. If I do, I have a laptop, desktop, and am usually near a PC in some capacity. The joys of being a tech.

I would have to say that I would probably use it frequently, I guess it's probably based on my lifestyle. I've had my Moment just a few weeks so still learning what it can and can't do. There are several hours a week that I'm outside, not driving, not near a PC or wifi. For example today I was outside with my dogs and my wife called to get directions to a room at out local university. I knew that they have maps posted on their website but I was about 5 minutes from my house so I sat down, put her on speaker and attempted to load my browser but no go. I'm involved in a lot of outdoor activities and people will call to see if we're aware of the storm that's coming later in the day or my wife is heading to a meeting and heard there was an article or comment in the paper that she wants me to check before she gets to the meeting so she's prepared. It would be nice to have the capability to do both web and phone, a nice feature for someday.

I'm so mad i cant talk on the phone, browse the internet, text people, check gps nav, and drive my car at the same time oh god why do these phones suck so bad and why must i focus my attention on the person with whom i'm having a conversation

^No one was implying anyone needed to do ALL those things if even half at the same time. For one thing you can talk and text at the same time, I'm pretty sure lots of people reply to a quick text during conversations. I can see the usefulness of needing to look up something quick while in a phone call. Not everyone might be in near or out near a computer. So just take it down a notch.

Here are a few valid examples for all the smartasses:

On hold with anyone and need to kill time or lookup information.
Check your gmail calendar to see if you are free on a day.
Settle a bet with Google while talking on the phone.

Speakerphone or headset solves the problem of not paying attention to the person while using the phone. And if an iPhone can do it, we must need it right?
