Android Market vs Verizon Market

Currently yes. Under one of the settings there is is an option to install apps from unknown sources, meaning that all you need is the apk file and you can install anything.

That isn't to say that option couldn't be removed at some point. Personally, I doubt that they would.

I was startled to see that option in the menu, thinking that it could be a doorway to borking your phone by installing barely compatible or even rogue software.

I am not much of an app freak, using only the "delete old messages" and a few games now and then, but I do wonder how many folks posting slow downs, freezes and other bad behaviors have opted at some point to allow the "unknown sources" feature to be enabled and then started using an application that negatively influenced the system.

so if i bought an app from the verizon app store, i should be able to get it back for my eris? i had an env touch last and got the city call id app. it was better than any other city id app in the android market.

That's an interesting question. Off the cuff answer would be probably not. Apps for feature phones use a different OS. I *think* it's BREW, but maybe not. The only way you could get it back is if Verizon and/or the vendors of the app wrote it for Android. But, that may be exactly what they are doing with the app market, so I don't know. Are they porting all the apps feature phone users are used to, or are they creating new ones for Android. It will be fun to watch and see!

A while back my son upgraded from a Chocolate to a Voyager. When he did the upgrade he had a couple of paid games he wanted back so I called VZW. They told me he has to buy them again since he changed phones voluntarily. If his Chocolate had crashed and they replaced it, the apps would have been free, but not on an upgrade.
