About 2,000 Chinese employees of an iPhone assembly company fought a pitched battle into the early hours of Monday, forcing the huge electronics plant where they work to be shut down.

Authorities in the northern city of Taiyuan sent 5,000 police to restore order after what the plant's Taiwanese owners Foxconn Technology Group said was a personal dispute in a dormitory that erupted into a mass brawl.

However, some employees and people posting messages online accused factory guards of provoking the trouble by beating up workers at the factory, which employs about 79,000 people and is owned by the world's largest contract maker of electronic goods.

"The plant is closed today for investigation," Foxconn spokesman Louis Woo told Reuters. It was not clear how long the plant would be shut while police and company officials investigate the violence, but an employee contacted by telephone said the closure could last two or three days...."

Its all very sad what truly goes on there. Word is national vacation week in china is coming up and supposedly the workers are being forced to work during the period. Of course only for a minimal overtime rate of a mere 4$ too. I think both apple, and china are both to blame.

This has been in the press for over a year.
I can state with certainty based on previous reports that they also make HP products and some Sony mobile products. I had a short list in the iPhone 5 thread where this issue appeared previously.

Just the press likes to insert the iPhone into everything, that's what happened here to some extent.

Foreign workers vs foreign iPhone makers is a different level of selling and the press rarely seems to resist sensationalism.

I'm sure that's exactly what happened here.

And products/parts for many others, too. Apparently, they will build Dell and HP stuff and Apple is building a plant in Brazil.

Most of our LCD/Digitizers were from Foxx.

I think both apple, and china are both to blame.

It is rather complicated I should think.

China does not want Apple to leave and Apple needs the low cost labor because Apple does not want profits to leave. Apple can threaten to leave and China can cut them a deal. Or something like that. Not sure what that deal might be, but I am betting there is some deals, somewhere.

Apple (apparently) cannot build a plant here. Or so they say. China wants Apple and Apple needs China because consumers want cheap stuff.

Not sure if it is just Apple. Lots of manufacturers build in China for any number ($$$) of legitimate ($$$) reasons having nothing ($$$) to do with ($$$) or so they tell us.

We had work done in Ireland because of some tax reasons and for a short while, Palm Pilots were built in China.

In the final wash, it all comes down to $$$. We could do it well in this country if we were given a chance. But I'll need help. Can any of you solder fine pitch SMT?

How can anybody celebrate over a story like this? These people work under horrible conditions. Can you imagine going to your job and being beaten by guards? It's hard to fathom the size of these factories. The workers live there in dorms, rarely leaving. They are like indoor cities. They had to put up barriers to keep people from jumping off the roofs. This makes the Apple vs Android argument seem beyond unimportant.

I think Bill is also evil man/ Some say he works under direct government order. I don't think those vaccination is necessary or any other kind of vaccination is necessary. Some idiots go to Walgreens to get a flu shot.. i dont take flu shots and don't feel like because i can't remember when i had a flu last time.

Fair enough, I grew up thinking m$ was the evil empire, like in star wars but since then my opinion has changed. If apple are doing good in the world then they must be quite modest about it.

I myself have thus far evaded the compulsory flu stabbings, it was a close call but with great strength broke free of the restraints & am now on the run, dodging the darts, so to speak .

I thought we were bad when the newly hired line supervisors and a manager removed an actual bomb from one of the employee lockers. No FD or cops were called. I still think we should have taken things more seriously.

I feel for the workers. I recall how it once was (I was not there; I am not that old) before labor laws arrived.
