Root Root and Unroot for Stock 2.3.6(for devs and power users)

...This ^^^ Sprint unroot zip is untested...

...It will unroot 2.3.6 and upon reboot, stock recovery will be back...

Still doing some testing, but here's my findings so far...
1. After flashing tu_sprint_unroot, I restarted my phone, and went into recovery. I guess CWM was still on there, because it went into that. EDIT: does it make a difference that I made a backup prior to installing tu_root?

2. The unroot did something though, because apps requiring root access refused to work (correctly). However, Superuser was still on the phone, and opened without issue (I'm guessing uninstalling SU isn't part of the unroot's routine, so i'm not worried there).

3. I re-flashed the unroot and let my phone restart all the way because I turned it off right as soon as I got through the lock screen the first time, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference.

So that's my findings so far. If it'd help, I was planning to factory reset my phone and then create a backup; I could upload it here. As I've stated in previous posts, I was one of the lucky few who was able to OTA without problems, so the backup may help others that are/were having wifi issues.

Uh-oh, I think I bricked my phone. It gets to where it shows the model number, hangs there for about 2 minutes, then bootloops. I was trying to restore to the backup I made just before running tu_root, and it froze in the process of checking the md5, then restarted itself.

EDIT: WHEW!!!!! Just (re-)learned the hard way that there's truth to the old saying "Patience is a virtue". Note to others: DO NOT PRESS BUTTONS WHILE THE PHONE IS RESTORING. IT WILL CAUSE THE PHONE TO BOOTLOOP OR WORSE!!!!

Anyway, restored the backup I made, and let the phone do its thing this time, and all is well. I even still have CWM, believe it or not :D

Today I installed the update by using unroot for boost to restore the stock recovery, the I flashed the update, let it reboot and odined cwm back on and reflashed the root tu file.. this is confirmed working to restore root and allow custom recovery to stay on after an ota update.

Which update? FC29 or FF27?

I think with at least the sprint version of unroot in the OP it is not removing cwm after a reboot because the file in the zip under etc is named install_recovery.sh instead of install-recovery.sh.

There is more than one way to skin a cat though.
-I got notice of the sprint update today for FD11 to FG11 so I ended up moving the update from /cache to the sdcard and named it update.zip.
-Did a backup in TB & cwm
-Used dd to write the stock recovery image to mmcblk0p13.
-Booted in the stock recovery to flash the new update.zip.
-Used Odin to flash cwm recovery to the phone.
- In cwm installed the root zip, then while still in cwm, mounted system and with adb deleted the 2 files that reinstall the stock recovery, rebooted out of cwm. everything seems hunky-dory. Except that new lock screen seems way too easy to unlock.
-Did on more backup in cwm.

EDIT: OK I give up, what's the trick to put it into silent mode from the lockscreen?

when i flash the tu-boost-unroot will i get back stock recovery?

Not right away; the stock recovery only re-installs itself when the phone boots up fully after using Odin to push the image to the phone. So if you're wanting the stock recovery, just let the phone boot up to the lockscreen. If you're NOT wanting stock recovery, before pushing this over, you'll want to grab the tu_root_.zip available above in the first post, or this CWMKeeper.zip, and move them to the root of the SD card (from the phone, this will be "/mnt/sdcard" or /sdcard", from the computer, this will be the window that shows up when you choose the option to view files), then follow the steps below (press the "Show" button). The CWMKeeper file does the same as the tu_root, but without adding root access.

1. Use Odin to flash the tu-boost-unroot to your phone. Follow the directions in the first post, except while the phone is connected to the computer in download mode, and before flashing any files, pull out the battery. This is to help keep the phone from booting up all the way later; as long as the phone is in download mode and connected via USB, it will not turn off, even with the battery removed.
2. After flashing the files, the phone will reboot. Immediately unplug the USB cable from the phone as soon as the phone turns on.
3. Re-install the battery and the back cover, making sure the phone doesn't turn on in the process (it usually won't, but if it does, another alternative is to hold the volume down button while installing the battery, forcing the phone into recovery mode, but only do this if it insists on turning on when putting the battery back in).
4. (If you're not there already) While the phone is off, boot into recovery mode by holding the volume down button, and pressing the power button. Remember to keep holding the volume down button until the phone shows the recovery menu.
5. Using the volume buttons to navigate, and the power button to select, from the main menu, choose "install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > (whatever).zip > Yes - Install (whatever).zip", where (whatever) matches the zip file you downloaded. If when you boot into recovery, it doesn't say anything about being a CWM-based recovery, doesn't have "install zip from sdcard" as an option, and only has four options to choose from, then the stock recovery has snuck its way onto the phone, and you'll want to follow the instructions at this thread to get CWM back on your phone, then start back here at step #5.
6. After the zip file is done installing, it will take you to the main menu. Select "reboot system now" to reboot your phone, and enjoy. :)

Thanks for the zips! I used tu_root_ on my Transform Ultra running 2.3.6, which I bought from a Sprint MNVO called Ting. It's great having a rooted phone, although I am having a few issues...mainly apps hanging sometimes. Not sure if that is because it's rooted, or just general Android weirdness.

Another issue is that when I use the back camera, flickering green lines appear on the image both during preview and after capture. Just wanted to report this in case anyone else has experienced it.

All rooting does is allow access to system files. It does not change anything by way of programming.
The camera flicker has to that particular phone or just as you stated, android weirdness.

I have the tu_root file if anyone needs it:

tu_root_.zip

Otherwise, you're out of luck, I'm afraid. :( Even when they were available, the Sprint unroot files didn't work (or not for me, anyway - they kept crashing Odin when I would try to use them), but I can't say for sure on the Boost. If you can, try to track down Chev's or Loota's unroot files and follow their directions. As far as I know, those ones are still available.

That would be koo if you did or at least the file(s) name cuz I do have tons of backups and I have so many downloads of different files, ROMs that no long have active links not knowing what versions, carrier, or install procedure from CWM or Odin, I don't want to unzip something and have it fail. What I have done at this point is restored a backup from may of 2012. My phone was seriously lagging and slowing down so much that was going to smash it but I needed the screen to swap with one I bought on ebay. every time I changed ROMs there were things like setting, wallpapers, boot animation with last ROM sound effect that carried over and I have been wanting to start all over again also since data plan now includes hotspot and it worked back then and with Bob's kernel the drag and drop was fixed besides I'm not a gamer so wasn't an issue. Plus I've noticed by going back in time that all the apps that were not compatible with my phone are now compatible. I was really surprised when I noticed the sprint app call Smart Device Manger that was pushed to our phones and by what issues people have had written in the reviews, but I glad I'm rooted and had titanium uninstall it. I really just went back to OG phone from eBay and this old board is screaming fast like it was new again running 3D launcher, switches 3G to WiFi and nothing lags but since it is a backup with a lot of stuff I don't use it would be nice to have fresh install. If anyone is looking for some of these Roms or files I have I would be more than happy to upload to a cloud or send direct, just hmu.
