Hi

Had my hero now for about 3 months and really it but just a couple of problems! firstly sometimes when i go to call someone i hit the call button and it goes to the call screen but it doesnt connect the call doesnt even ring and just does nothing so i have to end the call and turn my phone off and back on for it to work??

Secondly i seem to be receiving text messages really late sometimes hours later and its really frustrating if anyone could suggest anything i would be really grateful, cause at the end of the day the hero is a phone and if that doent work properly i cant really keep it!!

Hi it could be down to a number of things.
First of all it would be really helpful if you could fill in the following information for us.

-Your Carrier (E.g. T-Mobile/Orange)
-Your Firmware version
-Your baseband version
-Are you using a Custom ROM or standard ROM?
-Have you rooted your phone?

Firmware / Baseband information can be found by going to settings > About phone

thanks.

Hi there,

The latest build for the stock Orange ROM is 2.73.61.66.

I'd suggest updating to the latest ROM before troubleshooting any further.

HTC Hero - ROM upgrade for HTC Hero (Orange)

This has also happened to me 2-3 times since having my phone in November last year. It hasn't been a massive problem, but as others are complaining of it, I just thought I'd chip in :).
As others have said, the phone appears to begin making a call, the contact's picture appears and the call timer starts. Then, silence.
When this happened to me last week, I got my partner to try calling me and she was sent straight to voicemail.
Full signal strength was shown on all occasions that this has happened and it was in places that my partner, who is on the same network, was able to make/receive calls with no problem on a different manufacturer's handset.
I have tried enabling then disabling airplane mode, but the only thing that sorts it is a restart of the phone.
T-Mobile UK
Build 2.73.110.26
Not rooted, so stock radio.

I'm doing a test on this and so far in one week I've had no problems. After one month, I'll consider it solved.
The problem is that the phone will not work properly on a 3G signal, so if you try to send or receive a call or sms whilst the signal is stuck on 3G, theres a chance that the call/sms wont be sent/received.
I dont hold with this theory that you should downgrade your settings to 2G only, as if I'd wanted a 2G phone, I would have gone with an Alcatel.
What I'm testing is keeping WiFi turned on, and so far this seems to be working, but as I said, I'm only a quarter of the way through my test period.

I have also seen this and it is annoying.
Some of the time though it is down to another 'feature'. If you call a number that is engaged the Hero / Orange automatically ends the call after a couple of seconds. Often it is so fast to do it that you don't even hear the engaged tone so it appears like a dropped call. It took me months to catch onto this.

I'm also having problems like this. I've been getting it since Jan.

Orange have replaced the handset once and just last week all of a sudden they have decided its all due to 3g mast problems in the area. I have been getting the problem in leicester and where i live in nottingham.

Other people in my hoiwe or area arent having any issues, the last person I spoke to at orange has passed it on to a higher team then the normal tech support and basically said what you going to do about it.

I have similar problems...

Calls... making a call sometimes wont connect, just says dialing then a beep when call ends. Orange cra called me back last week and had to try twice cus first time the call dies he heard a Sharp beep then the call cut.

Callers when it does ring don't have the option to leave voice mail, it just cuts out. Vm is on and orange cant figure this out. I didn't get missed call

Last week I didn't get a missed call but my gf called me and got a fax/modem noise

Internet.
When using gprs internet I loose connection. I have to make a phone call to force the connection, but usually have to try 2/3 times. I dial 150 as its free and automated. Once I tet te connection back I can use it for anywhere vetween 2-5mins before ihave to do it all over again. When making the phone call doesnt work I have to pull the battery.

It's getting to be a major pain in the... and free all these calls to orange and a replaced handset they have sad its a mast problem.

Oh also have the same problem on 2g. But when I tested my sim in my old phone it was fine. I thinkits orange and their crappy branding.

I am also experiencing these exact symptoms. My phone is a simfree Hero running with an Orange sim. Using the latest HTC stock ROM
Firmware 1.5
Build 2.73.405.5
I wonder if anyone else in the UK, on a different network is experiencing this?

As I said above my gf on orange in the same location as me has no problem at all with her phone. And people I know on orange wit un branded hero in notts have no issue at all

It's not just a case of poor signal in your area, is it?

I've had cases with my old iPhone, on a different carrier, where texts don't get to me for a few hours, even though it shows having a signal.

They always seemed to arrive when I went home though, where I had a stronger signal.

It's as if you need a certain strength of signal for some things (particularly MMS) to get through.

I'm on Tmob and experience all of the same issues!

My mate is on an unbranded Vodafone and he has the same problems too.

I think it's a Hero problem...

Switching to 2g only does seem to have cured the problem though.

Hopefully the 2.1 update will completely fix it!

I would probably have to agree, I have been with orange for 5 yeasrs now and had samsungs and nokias all the time, and never experienced this problem before, only since I moved to the HTC phone, I haven't done the update yet, but I am not thinking this will fix it, I will probablt move to O2 later in the year and this will then stop this from happening, as the OH is on O2 and never has this proble(not a HTC).

this is different, to what we are all mentioning,

when we get a call problem, the call will stay on the screen until you click the end call button - but no call has been made and no noise on the line, your are describing the engaged display/feature which yes is annoying as it is lightning quick but is a different issue, all i do with that is re-dial and look at the screen and it flashes up in the top right "engaged".

I had this problem where sometimes when trying to call doesn't work and also some of the widgets seem to play up and also the internet not connecting. So have to reset the phone for me to call or connect to the internet.
I have never reset the phone to get calls back, I just wait, within a few tries again it makes the call successfully.

Only reason I do it this way is so I dont have to wait for the phone to turn on as it seems quicker my way.

I try to wait a while but still seems to freeze the widgets and dont connect any call I make so I just give up and turn off the phone. So I will try for a little bit longer next time. thanks

Just hope the 2.1 fixes all this problem.
