Help with WiFi & Bluetooth

I live in the US and have a Vodafone Magic with my T-Mobile sim card. I cant get wifi or bluetooth to turn on. I got this phone from a friend of a friend yesterday. This phone has 1.6 software on it, could that be the problem? what is the current software for the 3G mytouch?

The current firmware for the stock Mytouch 3G is 1.6, so I don't think that is your problem. That is extremely odd because you'd expect those frequencies to the same everywhere you go. It may just be something wrong with the phone itself. Power down the phone, and press and hold Home and Power together, see what comes up, and copy it down and post it here, also power off, then Power back on while holding Back and Power and copy down what appears and post it here. I don't know what I can do to help, but I will try my best.

The only thing I can think of is that something in the radio is causing issues, since Vodafone is a non-U.S. carrier.

Is the phone rooted? You can flash the current T-Mobile radio, but you'd have to have root access.

Also as Insta said, I think there is something wrong with the radio, and maybe this friend of a friend did root the phone and did change the radio and messed it up somehow. I think rooting would be the best way to get that corrected, rooting it and then simply flashing a rom that has bluetooth and wifi working, so like any rom out there, everything should work. By the way, can you get 3G and Edge?

Yeah, they'll be here any minute, but to bring it back to topic, I bet there will be an iPhone/Android episode any day now, something with suing companies, whatever it is it'll be good!

I was just told that the phone has been unlocked. Is that the same as rooting? Is there a way to get it back to its original state? and will I be able to use the Vodafone Magic with my T-Mobile sim Card?

Having root access is not the same as it being unlocked. Unlocked just means you can use it for other GSM carriers, it weren't unlocked you wouldn't be able to use your T-Mobile sim. To have root access is to be able to make changes to the OS, which you'd be unable to do otherwise.

ETA: deleting some bad info. Researching for the right info...

Found it (hey, I'm old and forgetful, so sue me): The easiest way to tell if you've got root access is to power off, then power back on while holding down the Home button. If you get an exclamation mark inside of a triangle, you're not rooted. If you are, you'll get a recovery image with a few options (depending on whose recovery image it is).
