New welding helmet

When it comes to PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), never go cheap.

Just a couple of weeks ago I returned to the welding industry after being away for just over 3 years. Yesterday I picked up a top-end Lincoln 3350 Viking helmet that was on sale. The artwork and helmet choice is a lot better now than it use to be, why settle for a plain black helmet? ;-) Maybe EyeBeam should look into this!

For those in the know, the specs are;

4 arc sensors
auto darkening screen; 3.74 x 3.34
shades #6 to #13
1/25,000 second light to dark speed

Ever arc weld with your fly open? I'll assume you know the eventual outcome, even though the non-welders among us might wonder.

Hi Bob, I haven't done Thermite at all. The place I just started at does GMAW and GTAW. It's a lot of small pieces that can be moved around by hand, no cranes or heavy work. Ventilation hoods at every station, its by far the cleanest shop I've worked at.

Zipper is always shut (at work) however, I have had a large piece of slag go down my back ...made a new type of jig dance that day ;-)

Very sweet! I haven't done much welding since I was in high school, and would love to have a place where I could work on my cars and fabricate some parts using a welder and plasma cutter. As someone who learned to weld long before self-darkening glass, I'd love to be able to see how well this works.

All I know is it would be very hard to go back to a standard welding helmet.

Initially when you are fitting and tacking the job up an AD helmet is excellent; no flipping the helmet up and down to re-position yourself. Same with finishing the job when you have multiple stitches, short runs etc. Another thing is different plate thicknesses on the same piece; maybe you need a 1/4" bead in one area and a heavier bead somewhere else, with AD you flip shades on the fly, normal helmets you'd have to stop, switch out the lens from say, a #9 and put in a #11 and slow down the production. I suppose you could have 2, maybe 3 standard helmets, plus a cutting/grinding shield but that would be a pain! ;-)

Nice looking helmet. I love welding myself. And hot metal in general. I've been learning to forge a bit. Hoping to get a blacksmith apprenticeship.
