Root Someone hold my hand?! : )

Hello! So, I have a DHD which has generally been good for me. Except the battery life, which is getting worse....different topic! (and hopefully improved with a new ROM!)

Anyway, its time to catch up I think. I believe that I am running GB that I received OTA when it was released. (Android Version 2.3.5, Software Number 3.12.405.1)

I don't think i've ever rooted this phone, but not 100% sure. Im not a techie, but im pretty good with PCs, and following instructions! Im just a little bit scared of bricking my phone etc. So, just wanted to check the process with someone before I jump off the ledge! SO...

I have downloaded the AAHK, and ready to roll with that. I have backed up my SMS's. I want to do a complete system wipe, as over the 2 years I have a few issues with some of the calendar and contact entries on there...I want a fresh start from scratch. It sync's with my outlook, so it will all just re-sync from that. Is there a way to just get a list of the various app's I have installed so I can select which I want to re install?

Once the AAHK is completed, I just follow the following instructions I presume?
a) Place the downloaded zip file in the root of your SDcard. Do not put it in a folder or anything.
b) Check the file md5sum
c) Go into recovery.
d) Factory reset/wipe date
e) Wipe cache
f) Wipe dalvik
g) Install from zip
h) Reboot

I have downloaded IceColdSandwich-8.7.2 from here Index of /download/icecoldsandwich/Releases/ and this is the file that I will put onto the root of my SD Card, correct?

Basically, are there any steps I have missed? Should I go for it?!Seeking a little guidance, support...and maybe holding my hand?! :dancing:

Take a look at this thread first. I think it may answer a lot of your questions. After that please post any questions on any matters you want clarification on.

Also maybe best we do this step by step.

For AAHK please note (from the manual):

Windows - a good, clean environment is critical - BEFORE plugging in your phone, do all of the following:
Disable all malware detection, including Windows Defender
Uninstall Droid Explorer
Stop ALL Apple services
Uninstall ALL other phone pda or tablet software
Uninstall HTC Sync AND drivers
Install HTC USB Drivers for Android from the Hack Kit (tools/windrivers)
IMPORTANT: Disable all unnecessary tasks and services. Google how to do this as ADMIN.
The hack kit runs flawlessly in under 6 minutes on a clean PC env with drivers properly installed, but THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANING UP ALL UNNECESSARY PROCESSES CANNOT BE OVERSTRESSED.

I would really recommend trying this (also from the manual):

Ubuntu 32bit liveCD has the best chance of success.

This method runs an entire clean OS run off of a cd. Ubuntu LiveCD always starts clean. No drivers to worry about and eliminates almost all connection issues and PC problems.

Instructions for making a livecd: How to make an Ubuntu LiveCD
Choose 10.04 LTS 32-bit or click here to start download.
Make a CD, NOT a USB flash drive. A CD will avoid USB contention issues
Once booting, select 'try ubuntu'. No need to install.
Open Terminal via Applications>Accessories>Terminal
The following command will download, unpack and run the hack kit from terminal in Linux:
wget http:///tau.shadowchild.nl/files/aahk-12062012.zip && unzip aahk-12062012.zip && sudo ./hack-ace.sh
Don't forget to update the above command line (2 places) to reflect the filename of the current version hack kit

Lets get the phone rooted first, lets talk about installing Ice Cold Sandwich (a excellent choice) later.

Go for it, seems like you're well prepped for it. Just make sure you instal the htc drivers before you use aahk

But read the manual well, I did it once. Did not take down notes, and was so nervous I don't remember what I did. scotty85 and D-U-R-X rooted pre-AAHK (the hard way).

Thanks for the tips guys. So, I ran AAHK and it all seemed to work OK< until i got this:

You can see the steps i made. When you phone rebooted, it saying something like "File not found" to the 2 zip files, and then I think "Older version not found". Does that makes sense to anyone? Advice? tips?! Thanks!!

If you want to back up your apps, Titanium back is the app you'll need, but you need root access for it to work. It's a great app, and you'll find yourself using it a lot while you flash loads of Rom's. There is a free version, but recommend paying for the pro version, it allows you to "batch backup and restore" instead of each app 1 by 1. The trouble you have I believe, is that in order to gain root access, you need to downgrade your firmware, which will wipe your data, so i don't know what to recommend to you, other than a pen and paper, to write down all your apps. :stupido: Unless someone else knows of something that i don't.
But on the plus side, when I rooted mine, I used it as a time to have a "clear out" of all the apps i didn't want/use anymore.

Sounds to me like the zip files didn't make it to your SD card, or they weren't visible. Is your SD card formatted to FAT32.
I am not sure whether this has anything to do with it at all, but it may be something to check while D-U-R-X, @Scotty85 and Ral get here.

The apps should reappear and start downloading when you log back in with your Google account. My advice to OP would be to use wifi for this as to not waste 3G data.

In regards to the rooting process, as ral suggested, if you can burn a Ubuntu cd and run it it would make it a lot easier as it's literally one command to download and run the script and then it's done but I appreciate it's not the most convenient way. It will work with windows (and the lovely folks here will help and make certain of that I'm sure) but it may give you some headaches getting it to work first time

Could be like someone already said, your sd card is not fat32 format. If it is, and it's still not working, try a different sdcard. I was having the same problem at the step you are. I tried out a different sdcard and I had no problems. Worth a try if you have another card laying about.

I tried a new card, and even re formated it to fat32. I also tried the Ubuntu cd method, but i couldnt get any of my 3 PC's to boot from the DVD drive, so im stuck! URGH! Any more thoughts? By the way, this is what appears on my phone when the AAHK has run and done its stuff (as per the screen shot above).

cannot stat "tools/bin/zergRush': No such file or directory

By any chance do you have a virus scanner running in the background? It might have deleted tools/bin/zergRush.

Option 1:

Try deleting AAHK, uninstalling any anti-virus/malware programs you have and download AAHK again (after deleting the anti-virus program).

AV's mistake zergRush for an exploit.

Option 2: (Highly recommended)

Make a Ubuntu 32 (not 64-bit) live CD, download AAHK and do it from there.

the update failed becasue the main version was not changed,becasue zergrush did not work,prolly becasue it was not there,prolly becasue of your firewall or antivirus. unless its buried in a zip in a zip,most programs will remove zergrush from the download. it looks like some sort of threart.

the status bar does idicate proper sd card format and that the file made it to the card,however

Thank you so much guys! I hadent stopped the AV before extracting the zip file! DOH! I have to run the tool a couple of times, but eventually worked. I now ive ICS running really well, all my apps are up and running, and my exchange server is playing nicely with Android for the first time. Love it! Thanks
