Root Phone took a bath...

A little over 24 hours ago my Evo fell into the bathtub. I quickly retrieved it, shook off what water I could, opened it to dry what I could reach and let it sit, with battery and SD card removed, to air dry. Last night I bought rice, put the phone, battery and SD card into a bowl and covered them with it.

I turned it on, and it went into a loop wherein the "HTC Evo 4G" screen appears, then the screen goes black, then it reboots and repeats.

My phone is rooted, with Capt. Throwback's stock ROM. Using Power+vol up, I got to the recovery menu and selected "Simlock" and got a message like, "SD fail init."

I installed a 32G SD card recently, so I thought the card itself might have been ruined, so I reinstalled the original one. The looping behavior continued.

Any suggestions? Should I simply leave the phone in rice for another day or two?

i think you mean that you were in the bootloader and not recovery. not sure why you wanted to choose sim lock. you need to be in recovery to fix your phone. as long as you have recovery then you should be fine.

also an sd card will not have anything to do with bootloops. you can even take the card out and the phone will still run.

if you can report back if you can get to recovery or not. hopefully then we can get your phone working again.

You're right, I meant bootloader. I tried simlock simply as part of a process of going through the bootloader menu to see if any of the options would yield useful information.

After reading more on the forums about wet phones, I've decided to give the rice at least another day to do its work before I try anything further. I'll report back in tomorrow or Tuesday.

I've always had good luck with putting the phone on the charger. I think the heat caused from charging it probably helps.

Anyway, I've saved multiple of my old blackberries this way after sitting in a bag of rice overnight didnt help. Threw it on the charger for most of the day and came back and the phone was working.

Just make sure its not covered in water still when you plug it in. Electricity + water obviously dont mix

Here's the promised update...

I just retrieved my phone from its extended rice bath. It is still doing as before - going to the "HTC Evo 4G" screen, then going black, and looping.

I can get to the bootloader, but when I select "recovery" from the bootloader menu, the phone just resumes the looping behavior.

Suggestions?

I would try to load a recovery.
What does your bootloader say...i.e...can you post back here what your bootloader screen says?

As far as unlocked, s-on...or unlocked s-off, etc, etc...

When I do Power+VolUp, I get:

-Revolutionary-
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.16.1002
MICROP-041F
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16AB
RADIO-2.15.00.0008

FASTBOOT

<VOL UP> to previous item
<VOL DOWN> to next item
<POWER> to select item

BOOTLOADER
REBOOT
REBOOT BOOTLOADER
POWER DOWN

When I select BOOTLOADER, the top two portions remain the same, except that "FASTBOOT" is replaced by "HBOOT"

The bottom portion reads:

FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
HBOOT USB

If the phone needs to be booted in order for adb to work, I guess I'm screwed. My Evo served me well since Aug. 2010. Time to search the forums for threads about buying used phones and transferring existing Sprint accounts onto them....
Well, just recently ran across this member who was going to sell his phone if you would like to p.m. him about it?

I am posting this just to close out this thread. I accepted the conclusion that my Evo was kaput and began researching for a replacement, and yesterday I bought a Samsung Galaxy S3. So I'll be hanging out in the Samsung forums. I have had some great help from fellow Evo-ites over the past couple of years, and look forward to further Android adventures over in Galaxyland. I can hardly wait to see what ROMs will emerge...

Cheers!
