Will the Nexus 7 last long enough?

Hey guys! I'm getting an iPhone 5 soon (Don't hate please - I just like the thought of my phone being simple, a little easier to use everyday), but I love Android so much that I really want a tablet for it!

I'm thinking that Android is actually a way better OS for tablets, because of its advancedness is widgets, and such. And basically, I'm set on a "pure" Google device for android.

What I want to know is, how "future proof" is the Nexus 7? How fast is it? My mom has a Nook Tablet, and it's fairly slow... I plan on getting it for Christmas and would like to know if there is a new one in the works soon. By soon I mean within 4 to 5 months. I hear its a great tablet though, so im just curious.

Also, how is the screen? It's PPI isn't exactly up there like it is with some phones out there, but its an IPS screen right? I'm not nuts over PPI, and I feel like that the bigger the screen, the less necessary it is for the PPI to be way up around 300. I think the 7 is 240 PPI...

I am absolutely satisfied with it so far. The size is perfect (my girlfriend has an iPad '3' and after playing with it for while determined that it's a too big for easy use as a convenient info-gizmo).

I'm a die-hard iOS junkie that went through 3 android phones in two weeks that seemed slow and not easy to hold.

The Nexus 7 is a perfect size for reading, typing, and light web-surfing. The quad-core makes it plenty zippy with no perceptible lag, and the screen resolution is better that my eyes can see. There's talk of an upcoming 32gig model that I would prefer but so far I have 2 HD movies, 350+ tunes, and about 40 or so apps on board and still have a little over 10 gigs left to play with.

I honestly can't imagine a few small, incremental, changes making any real appreciable difference to its performance or utility.

There's already talk of nexus 7s with larger storage options, and there's supposed to be at least 1 manufacturer working on a new nexus tablet running 4.2 according to android police.

So under your circumstances, I'd wait for all the goodies that are coming soon.

Yep we may (probably?) see larger storage options, but its not a new device is it ? same item.

The problem with tech is if you wait there is always something better on the horizon. If you wait now there will be new stuff out for christmas, then there will be new stuff out in early 2013, then more stuff will come out at the end of Q2 etc..

A 10" tablet being added to the lineup makes sense, but I don't think you will see a new 7" tablet this side of next summer.

As for speed and performance, this tablet pretty much holds the top of the line. I've seen people give it a few software tweaks and beat the iPhone 5 in benchmarks. So as much as you can call anything future proof these days, this is probably it.
Ota updates of new android builds also add a nice bonus to that.

Either way, i still suggest holding off and seeing what new options we have in a month or so.

With nexus devices, in the past there haven't been any options in the same time frame. We may see that for the first time here and I'd rather have someone wait a few weeks and have more options than jump in and regret it.

I sold my iPad 2 to get a nexus 7, and I couldn't be happier with the change. I love this tablet, and believe its one of the best choices I've made.

Also 7" is far better to handle and type with than a 10" tablet is.

I would have perhaps liked a larger memory capacity on it, but that can be rectified with an OTG wire and a memory pen.

I think you have to look at what you need now. If you can hold off and wait, then by all means do so. But if you need to fill a void and the N7 meets your needs, then jump on it. There will always be something better on the horizon, and if you wait for it, you'll always be waiting...

Yeah okay I'll wait a little bit. A 32GB version may be worth it, considering I'd probably want to store more on a tablet than a phone.

Yeah, I am kind of surprised how quickly 16GB disappears. I only have 5GB left, and I NEVER have run out of space on any of my devices. Of course, Asphalt 7 is over 1GB by itself...

I have all of my music and quite a few 1gb plus games on the device. It can disappear fast of you aren't conscious. Granted, I could easily uninstall some of those games if the need arose.

Well, from my standpoint the N7 lasts little more than a month till it breaks.

I also have a Nook Tablet and there's no comparison. The N7 is much quicker and is overall a much better experience than the NT. The N7 build quality aside, it's got a lot of life left in it performance wise.

I would wait for the next generation hoping it's coming for the holidays.

I'm using an iPhone 5 and a Nexus 7 tablet.. Perfect combo imo.

In my opinion, even if you are set on the 7" form factor, wait until Monday to see the Nexus announcements. If you don't fall for the alleged Nexus 10, then you will still likely be able to get a 32GB Nexus for the same price as the 16GB version today. Maybe not, but it's certainly worth a few day's wait.

I love my N7, but am kicking myself for buying one less than a month ago just to find out now that I could get more for my money. Definitely the tablet you want though, don't bother with the iPad Mini, it's overpriced and has a sub-par display, which would certainly bother you if you're used to the iPhone 5's display.

Take reasonably good care of your tablet and the Nexus 7 will last you just fine until next year. (That is, put it in a case; don't drop it on concrete; stay away from large bodies of water; etc. All my gadgets have survived well beyond their expiration dates by following those tips. The one that failed I stupidly carried around without a case and dropped it on concrete.)

Spec for spec comparison the Nexus 7 is currently the top 7" tablet on the market. Fastest processor, most RAM, best resolution, routinely updated OS. Next Monday we should see several more options for Nexus tablet owners (more storage, bigger screen sizes, cellular radios).

Once you get a decent tablet, you won't find you need to upgrade it that often. I held onto my iPad2 for 2 years because it did all I asked of it. I tired of it only because I tired of its extra size and weight. 7" tablets are just a better fit for me.
