Help Fat fingered texting?

Lately I've been feeling like a real klutz when I text. Lots of words wrong, and I constantly have to backspace or go back and correct my mistakes. I've tried Swiftkey 3 and the default keyboard that comes with the RAZR and I get the same results.

So I'm wondering could my digitizer be out of sync? Are there screen calibration apps that would help me find out and get me back on track?

Or is it just me???

I don't think its you. It happens to me all the time on my Maxx. It's probably one of the very few user experiences that's actually worse than the Galaxy Nexus it replaced. I didn't have the same fat-fingering problem on the Nexus.

Come to think of it, I don't remember having this problem on my Droid X or my Bionic. I tell you it's driving me up the wall. My texting has slowed way down, and anything I have to type is frustrating...

Very funny. If my texting is slow now, it will slow to a crawl if I'm forced into stylus land...

I don't know if I have fat fingers or I'm just not careful, but, on a regular basis when typing I would hit the letter next to the letter I actually wanted, very annoying. I started using Swype, and after a little learning curve, I find Swype to work very well. It predicts the right word the more I used it even if I Swype over the wrong letter. If it puts in the wrong word all I do is touch the word and a list of alternative words is listed and usually the word I meant to type is there, touch it and the wrong word is replaced. Works well for me, maybe it will solve your problem.

That's why I switched to Swype, saves a lot of cursing. Lol

It takes getting use to. It took me a week or so, it also gets better at predicting text the more you use it. Hope it works for you.

My solution to my fatfinger typing was the Jbak keyboard available on Google Play Store and editing the "Custom Keyboard" configuration files available on the developer's website -Root is not needed-

My fatfinger problem was often hitting the key to the right of the key I wanted. So starting with Jbak's "Wide Key" keyboard I simply edited the configuration text file so that whatever key you press it types the key to the left.
-If you press "S" it types "A",
-If you press the Period it types a Comma,
-Etc.

The result is that instead of covering and hiding the key you want with your finger, you *point at the key you want*, end up touching the key to its right, and you get the letter you want.

Works great for me - it's accurate and fast.

In editing the config file, in the config for each key I added:
android:codes="xxx"
where xxx is the ASCII code for the letter to the left.

(I had to change the key width and add an extra row of keys on the right-which are also simple edits)

You can make lots of other changes too -
- Put any letter or character on any key
- Change the number of rows of keys
- Change the number of keys on each row
- Change the width of any key
- Make your own skin or color theme
- - - Much more

-Root is not needed-

My first smart phone...at 53...texting didn't (and still doesn't) come easy. No one told me that, depending on which hand I was using, I needed to actually go past the intended key a little. Once I figured that out, my accuracy is pretty good BUT STILL SLOW! So, I don't type. I speak my text and save myself a LOT of anxiety

i paid for swype but never used it lol...
i will be texting a friend and would run out of patience to teach swype and will switch to stock thinking next time should be a lil more patient

Swiftkey 3 comes in free and paid versions. I'm not sure what the difference is between the two (I glanced through the description for each and couldn't see the difference).

There's also a free and paid version for tablets...

And, when international "talk like a pirate" day comes around, they occaisionaly slip in a version that will help you type in pirate... ;-)
