...then root it and flash a custom rom.

Seriously, I've just done it and i'm rocking jellybean on this thing. It's not my main phone, I just had it laying around and felt like doing it for the hell of it so i could say i've done it.

It's given it a whole new lease of life. If you're able to download files from the net, drag and drop a couple things to an sdcard, and follow a few simple steps on your computer and phone, then you can root. I'm no computer expert at all, and i've done it. Plus the members here are really helpful.

It actually runs faster and smoother than my galaxy note.

I'm shocked.Launchers like apex and Go run a tiny bit slow when scrolling through the homescreens on my note, but on the dhd, smooth as, no lag whatsoever. Tempted to go root the note lol

I was going to root mine but Windows 8 Preview release wouldn't let me. Sold it now anyway, good phone but I felt I shouldn't have had to root it to run JB.

I have a DHD for a couple of months now, and im thinking about changing rom. I have some problem with my phone (random crashes) so I have to wipe it anyway. What I want to ask is: why change rom? What does JB have more than Gingerbread that is worth the risk of totally ruining the phone?

There's really not much risk if you follow all the instructions to a t.

JB is a lot more smoother, has some ICD/JB only apps.
Better multitasking switcher.
Notification bar changes

The UI in ICS/JB (broadly similar from a user interface point of view) is streets ahead of gingerbread, like using an entirely different phone. I'd say definitely worth it, and the risk of ruining your phone is minimal with all the guides out there on how to do it..

When you say that is smoother, you are talking about a rom with sense? I don't know if I want to take the sense if I'll change rom, anyway.

With ICS, you can swipe aways notifications. With Jelly Bean, the notifications display a few more lines of text so for shorter messages you won't have to open the app. Overall the user interface is more polished.

For apps, you get to run the newer version of Gmail, Google Calendar, Chrome Browser and other Google apps. If you don't go with Sense, you get to use the Apex and Nova launchers which are compatible only with ICS or JB.

Yeah, I remember now, first ROM I rooted was CM7 and I was surprised to see that I could swipe the notifications as I was used to doing on my Nexus 7. Didn't happen on my official GB release (although thinking about it, I never tries it because I wasn't even aware of it as a concept!).
