Is Jelly Bean 4.1 out for the Galaxy Nexus?

Hi,

I have a new Galaxy Nexus (the yakjuxw variant on 4.0.4), I've gone to system updates a dozen times and it always says the system is up to date.

I was under the impression 4.1 was released a few of months ago, even for the Samsung controlled models.

Is 4.1 not out for all nexus devices? or is it just my phone misbehaving?

Thanks,

David

it all depends on where you bought the phone. Only the Yakju and Takju variants are actually updated by Google. Most of the others are dependent on the carrier to update. Even if you bought it wholesale, if its not yakju it won't update unless your carrier pushes the update.

The solution is to flash the Yakju firmware. There are a number of instructions here on how to do it. A search should turn them up easily, including file downloads. Once you've flashed to yakju, you will get updates directly from Google. Nothing else will change. If I had a GSM Nexus, I'd flash.... but I'm stuck with the Verizon version so I rooted instead and load leaked ROMs.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the reply.

I realize i can try and flash the phone, before I do that though i just wanted to clarify that the 4.1 update is unavailable.

The sprint Nexus update (to 4.1.1) was released on 9/6/2012, i'm just having trouble understanding why I can't update. I have an unlocked GSM Nexus, surely the update to 4.1 is available for me by now when sprint released 4.1.1 on 9/6/2012.

Can anyone confirm that they can update an unlocked Samsung controlled varient to 4.1?

Thanks Again,

David

As was explained, the yakjuxw variant is not directly updated by Google but instead is updated by your carrier/Samsung. For some reason, several carriers have not yet updated their Galaxy Nexus phones to Jellybean.

You can update to the yakju variant easily, though it likely will reset your phone to factory specs (you will lose your apps/data if you don't backup and then restore). You can find the instructions to update to yakju here, and it really is simple to do. After completing those instructions, you will have the yakju variant of Android 4.1.1 on your phone. Also, Google is in the process of updating the yakju/takju phones to 4.1.2, and you will likely get that update OTA relatively soon after updating to 4.1.1. Also, once you have switched to yakju, you should then receive all future Android updates as Google releases them.
