Galaxy player 4.0 gps

I purchased and use CoPilot Live Premium USA on my SGP5. I've been happy with it. CoPilot installs the maps on my device so I can navigate without being connected to WiFi. It does a good job getting me places. I used to have a TomTom (crapped out after a couple years of use), and it occasionally struggled in the area I live and travel. CoPilot isn't perfect either, but it gets me from point A to point B efficiently 98% of the time. Once in the while it takes me out of the way but so did my TomTom.

I've read there are other apps that are free or work with google maps (CoPilot ran around $18 I think). You might do a search in the "Application Forum" here to get some additional opinions. But I'm satisfied with CoPilot.

"Navfree" seems alright and it's free. There are mixed reviews for it but is free so there is no harm in trying it. If you're in America then there is a separate version (called "Navfree USA" :D ) I've only used it briefly because I was looking for a Cycle Computer app that would record my routes, import previous routes to follow and show speed, distance and time etc but Navfree is just map and navigation. I found Orux Maps was more suitable for my needs but I doubt the navigation aspect will be what you are after.

A lot of map apps (especially the free ones) rely on caching the relevant map tiles while you are online before you can use them offline, Something that Google Maps itself is in the process of implementing more usefully. In some cases you could lose the maps if you exit the app or turn the power off. Navfree and some others will let you download whole countries (depending on their size, this might be broken down into regions) so they are always accessible.

The other thing to watch out for is how the navigation works as some require an internet connection to calculate their route. Not too bad on a phone because you'll have the connection and it won't take much but obviously no good for us SGP owners

Hi smsungal. Just so you know, the GPS in the SGP4/5 is independent from wifi. Just turn the GPS on by itself...no wifi is needed at all. Now, some apps can use the GPS OR WiFi (Google Maps can use either). WiFi isn't anywhere near as accurate as GPS though.

As explained above, all you need is an app that downloads the maps you need into you SGP...like Copilot, NavFree, etc.

It will work like one of those GPS devices you buy for your car...Garmin, TomTom, and the like.

Hi there. I tried using my GPS on my SGP, it didn't work at all. It gave me a message.

I can't remember the message, but...last night, I downloaded the GPS app NavFree USA. Tried it without connection, and it worked. I wonder if that's what I was missing? Unless there's already a built in GPS that comes with SGP 4.0. I went to the maps while off the WiFi, but had no luck in navigating, as I couldn't even change to satellite view...

I will look into GPS Essentials, thanks.

Your SGP4 does have a GPS chip, but you do have to turn it on. I don't use NavFree so I won't comment on its use, except to say it might have a setting that tells it to use GPS only.

On my SGP5, from the home screen I can pull down the Notification screen and there is a button to turn it on and off. I think your SGP4 has that screen. You could also go into Settings..."Location and Security" and turn on the "Use GPS Satellites" setting.
