ICS and battery drain

So I updated my Atrix 2 with ICS about 10 days ago.

Generally it's been working well. But on two separate occasions it seems the phone entered battery drain mode.

Each time, the battery was at around two-thirds to three-quarters charge. Then in few hours of no use at all, it drained down to zero.

The first time this happened it was during the night and the phone was sitting on the nightstand. The second time was this afternoon, while the phone was sitting unused in my pocket.

Any thoughts on how to approach diagnosing the problem?

1st of all you need to go by the actual battery percentage not the battery graph. Have you never noticed this behavior on Gingerbread?

Hi,
My Atrix 2 is running official ICS and is rooted. Today i decided i wanted to try to flash a better battery icon, so i found the zip file online and downloaded to my sd card. I rebooted and attempted to go into recovery and found the phone wouldn't let me. So i booted back up, tried installing Atrix 2 bootstrapper, which worked for me before i flashed back to stock gingerbread and updated to ICS. When i selected to reboot into recovery, the phone rebooted, and had a different boot animation, and got stuck there. The phone will not pass that. So I'm wondering what it is I'm needing to do. I can flash it when i get home tomorrow if necessary, but i was hoping i wouldn't have to do all that again. Any ideas?

I didn't know in advance that I'd need to know the exact charge state of the battery so I did not implement scientific data recording procedures ;-)

Still, it was more than half charged and less than fully charged.

And, no, I have never experienced this rapid discharge on an idle phone with Gingerbread.

i ask because the stupid bar could be showing halfway full but your phone could be at 60% or 40%.

I think at the time it was soft bricked, then as soon as I used RSD Lite to FXZ back to stock gingerbread, the bootloader files finished it out to a hard brick. Using the bootstrapper APK, which apparently i found out later has been addressed in ICS, will brick your Atrix 2, maybe other models. It worked back in gingerbread perfectly, but not ICS. A quick run to AT&T, one warranty claim later, and a "Oh, I see you are a valued customer, I'll expedite your shipping for free," and I've got a brand new phone on the way. I just hope they won't find anything on the brick cuz they'll bill me the price of the new phone. At least i can re-root and get my boot animation back when i get the new one. I might just leave the bootloading alone though.

Nope. The phone would do nothing. I mean nothing. Not even plugged into a charger would it even light up. RSD actually got stuck when flashing the FXZ once it hit the bootloader files. I've got my new phone now and the old one is boxed up to be mailed back, but after reading some more, I think I had more I options before trying to flash it. I was able to get into recovery when turning the phone on before flashing, but it acted like nothing would work, and when it showed the Android with the triangle over it I thought that meant I couldn't get in. Didn't think to try the volume up/down buttons again.

Noticed when looking at the battery usage the Android OS is now taking up 40-50% of the battery when it was around 20% with Gingerbread. Not too happy about the upgrade.

Because I installed it. That was prior to the ICS upgrade.

It seemed to be a bit of a battery drain on Gingerbread but it was acceptable. Under ICS it's a lot worse.

I'm going to investigate further if and when time permits and maybe get in touch with the developer. I do have a couple of theories:

1. It turns on the GPS quite frequently and that maybe a factor. Especially if the GPS remains on until it gets a decent fix which might take a while if the phone is indoors.

2. It's also possible that the instances on a total battery drain were associated with rebooting my WiFi access point. Maybe it kept polling a WiFi connection that was broken by the reboot?
