Making playlists for music

From what I can tell, the apps (WMP/iTunes/etc) just treat the phone as an SD card (obviously), so they don't sync over their playlists as well. It's a bummer, too.

I was hoping a more robust MP3 player (iPhone like, with large cover-art/etc) would have been out by now with maybe a better playlist manager.

You might consider trying my app BlueMuze (link in sig), the free version has all the playlist management stuff fully functional.

I got an email from a guy saying how that's what he used it for and he used PowerAmp for his main player heh :), and I just added support for backup and restore of playlists (beta).

Just note: this is not a sync app or a music player but people have told me it works well for playlist managment, so I thought I would mention it. Feel free to use it or not as you wish. And of course feel free to email me any feature requests/issues

Edit: oh wow this is an old thread heh. Sorry I guess this suggestion is a bit out of place.

What I did was make a folder on my sd card named music. I pasted ALL songs in 7 playlists from iTunes into the music folder. Not in any particular order. I then went back to iTunes and right clicked on one of the 7 playlists, clicked on export and saved it as a .m3u into the same music folder. I did this for all seven playlists.
So, in my music folder, I have all this single songs PLUS I have the 7 .m3u playlists.

But probably a better way to do it is.....
In iTunes, I have my playlists titled... REMIX 1, REMIX 2, REMIX 3, etc. In the GENRE, I put REMIX 1 for remix 1 playlist, etc. So that when I use my music player on my phone. (I'm using PowerAmp but most players will work) I just list my songs by genre and each playlist shows up. Hope that makes sense.

Move all music to SD card with computer link
Open Music app
Select Songs (or Artists etc)
touch and hold (like delete) a song
Menu comes up - select add to Playlist
Then new
Enter name of playlist

Select another song (artist is a quick way)
select by holding and then add to existing playlist or make another

Is it not possible simply to have all your songs in one master folder, and then place a series of .m3u playlist files in that folder too, which tells the Droid which songs are on which playlist?

Otherwise how do you do playlists where a song is in multiple playlists? Say I have a Classical playlist which plays only music from my classical collection, but also a General playlist where it will play from any of the songs on the Droid, including the Classical stuff. This would normally mean that I have to have the classical stuff present in both General and Classical folders, which takes up twice as much space on the SD card.

Therefore, does an .m3u playlist file have to exist only in the sole folder where the songs reside, then, and conversely can a folder have only one .m3u file in there?

Yes, you can export an m3u playlist with iTunes and then copy it anywhere onto your phone and most music players should recognize it. You will need to copy all of the music from those playlists separately though. But...I had a 228 song playlist that I tried to load onto my phone this way, but one of my music players said the playlist only had 188 songs. I've also noticed that they tend to disappear if I put them in the Playlist folder.

You can also copy playlists into most android phones using mediamonkey or Winamp. I've had some problems with this too though. I tried the same 228 song playlist and after I got it onto my phone it said it had 203 songs. A little bit better, but I still can't figure out why they're not all being copied over. As far as I can tell, they're all mp3s with no protection. Maybe some of them are a weird format that android won't recognize.

This way also occasionally creates duplicate albums if I already have the album on my phone and then add a playlist with songs from that album. If I delete them and try to re-add them they will not show up in the playlist, it's like they are gone forever.

There also seems to be a problem with tags. Occasionally when I add music this way my phone will not recognize the tags, it will show unknown artist and unknown album even though I know all of my music is tagged properly. At first I thought it was an issue with the id3 tag versions, but it didn't seem to do anything. Even if I changed nothing and tried to re-add them sometimes it would work.

And just this morning I tried to play one of my playlists and now there are only 3 songs in it. Yesterday there was 56, I have no clue what I did, the songs still appear to be on my phone just not in the playlist.

I was hoping to ditch my iPod for my GS3 but I'm about on my last nerve. And don't even get me started on Google Music.

Ok, encouraged by the answers above, I've reorganised my music collection by setting up the playlists on the android from just the one folder. Previously I'd been using Martin Schinner's excellent free app 'My Playlist Maker'; this works very well as far as it goes but like I said it needed the songs for each playlist to be in their own folder, thus causing considerable duplication as in my initial post.

I used the excellent free 'Playlist Creator 3.6.2' from oddgravity - where time becomes a loop to make my playlists, and the incomparable 'mp3Tag' from

Mp3tag - Download

to tag my mp3 files.

I can heartily recommend these programs and I can vouch that I have edited both tags and playlists directly on my Android while it is plugged in to my Windows 7 laptop.

Thanks to all posters here for your help and suggestions; I hope that my success and recommendations here are also helpful to someone too :)

iSyncr is what you're looking for. Install it on your phone and computer. when you plug it in, a list of albums, songs, and yes PLAYLISTS from your iTunes pop up and you can select which to sync. Every music player app I've use dafter this syncing method has recognized my saved playlists synced from iTunes

Fair enough but some of us are Apple Philistines - my own personal view is that I would not touch an Apple product with an orbital tether, never mind a barge pole. But, each to his own of course :)

Can't blame you. I don't really like iTunes much either but still use an iPod and haven't found anything better. And for the record, I recommended that for the op before I noticed this thread was for years old. :)
