Root Global firmware rom question

Hey all, I'm thinking I want to try installing newts xXX rom that just updated on 10/21. However it says it's for global. I think I'm on the latest stock firmware but haven't done an ruu for global firmware. I never leave the country or use my phone when I do, so I don't think I need the global firmware. Do I have to install it to get the rom to work? What does this do different from the stock? Where can I get the newest global ruu?

Finally, if I install the global, and newts rom, then decide to go back to nils business sense, do I have to ruu back to stock firmware to restore a nandroid of it?

You do need the global firmware, it's just a name for the most recent low level system software for the rezound. If a rom is based off it (newts 5.08 actually adds the global phone capability) then you need to run the ruu. Check out Scotts global phone thread where I have posted step by step instructions.

Once you have run the ruu for global firmware, you can't go back if you're s-on like me. But the good news is that global firmware is backwards compatible. You can have global fw and run an older rom like cleanrom or neomax 2 on top of it with no problems. You won't be able to use your phone as a true global phone on those roms, but since you don't travel its not an issue.

i thot you had run the global ruu allready. check your hboot... if its 2.27 then youre on the global firmware allready

for what its worth,you can run global roms on any ICS firmware,they just will not have global capability without the global firmware.

Huh, so apparently I am already on 2.27. Thanks! I guess I will just flash away!

*EDIT* I find it funny Scotty that you know more about my phone than I do....I've asked so many questions and followed so many of your tips!

Check out this thread Scotty started after global ruu came out. It has a lot of useful info. My step by step is in post 16, but I am linking you to scotty's post that provides some clarifications, as my steps were based on a specific goal (getting the global firmware but keeping the ROM I was using instead of going back to stock.)

Instead of running the full RUU like I did to jump from GB to the official ICS release, I just used the stock hboot/recovery to update just my firmware.

Hi scotty & obscuro & anyone else Haven't been back in a while but now that newt's ROM has been updated, I wanna give it another try. Just a few questions before I do it though:

I'm still on the global update 4.03.605.1 (the FIRST one). I see that newt's has to be on on the update 4.03.605.2. So for me to upgrade to that, I was thinking of doing it like this (I'm currently on viperRez 1.0.3 ROM, S-on):

-Restore Nandroid backup of the 4.03.605.1
-From there, install the RUU of 4.03.605.2 via the instructions fr. Android Police
-Install Newt's ROM

When do I have to relock? I know that this must be all done on a stock & locked system.

This would work, rite? Just wanna make sure.

if youre on the 4.03.605.1 firmware(hboot 2.27) then you dont need to do anything. just flash newts rom. the changes from .1 to .2 were minor software changes,the firmware remained the same.

Do you have a Windows comp. & if so are you planning on upgrading to Windows 8? All my comps will eventually be upgraded; I just hope the HTC drivers are compatible. If not I mite as well keep a desktop on Win7 Maybe a Mac is better, huh? ;p

well,i dunno about that mac business

i do use windows,but im not sure there are enuff benefits to windows 8 to warrant the change... hafta look into it. got things set up and workin pretty good how they are
