So overall I've been very happy with my launch day Gnex. No real issues to speak of. Verizon 4G has been good to me.

But this afternoon, I made a call (checking voicemail), no problem. This evening, I went to make another call and I can't. It states dialing, but never connects. After maybe 30 sec, it states call ended. I tried calling my number, but it doesn't ring either. Now a Moto Droid 4 on Verizon in my other hand works fine, so it's not the network.

I have full 4G access, and can connect with no problems to data. But I can't make or receive phone calls.

So I'm not a noob at this, and did the normal Airplane mode toggle, then power off, then removed battery. Nothing. Forced 3G only, set roaming to home only, etc. Still nothing.

40 min with Verizon tech support got me nothing as well. Only options left were to factory reset and/or replace SIM card at store tomorrow.

Anyone else have any gems of info on what to do here?

Did you try pulling the SIM card for a min, then putting it back in (re-seating it) and rebooting the phone? May be a bad connection on the card. If that doesn't work. I would try to swap the SIM with that Droid 4 (or any other phone that uses a micro-SIM) and see if it works then. Also, put the SIM from your Gnex into a known-working phone to see if it has the same issue dialing out. If that's the case, then it is your SIM card that's the issue that needs to be replaced.

I tried reseating the SIM a few times but didn't swap it. I'll give that a shot tomorrow.

This morning, the phone portion worked fine. Like nothing every happened.

After a bazzillion resets and Verizon Tech services didn't do anything, letting it sit overnight did. Still, I'm not enthused with the situation. I want to know what to do if this happens again. If it was an emergency, I would have been stuck.

Hi

I have this problem too. It seems related to different issues.
In my one old phone used by mom - the solution was to reinsert the sim card because it had moved around quite a bit...her phone's sim card slot is not very secure...

On the newer phones I think its a problem with bottlenecking...the phone boots up and in the process it checks the sms's / messaging and then goes to updates and then whatsapp and loads the contacts/dialer and I think a bottleneck occurs here. I solved it by going into the Settings...Applications...Manage Applications and select DIALER and FORCE STOP. This stops the dialer and the system reloads it.

Then you see RESTRICTED ACCESS changed...
and you can dial out.

Hope this helps

This happens to me almost everyday... I'm not exaggerating.. Sometimes I will receive a call and answer it and nothing there. Then immediately I will notice gray bars of no network then a couple seconds later I get the blue bars then I can make or receive a call. I have called Verizon, they are sending me a replacement under manufacters warranty but don't have much faith that the "new" phone will be better. I love the phone, but sometimes I actually do need to use it for a real phone.

The SIM card had nothing to do with your issue at it is only used for data on CDMA carriers. I would say the problem was likely with Verizon, even though your other phone worked.

The SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card holds all of your account information... including your phone number (which is why you can swap sim cards with another phone and keep the number without having to port it over). So essentially yes, if there's an issue with the sim then that could theoretically cause the issues that the OP is describing.

I thought CDMA carriers like Verizon and Metro PCS use UICC cards which enables the LTE. I know this is how it is with Metro. With Metro it's not a SIM card. It's a UICC card that MUST stay with the phone. It's locked to the phone and it can't me moved around. Replacements can only be got through Metro IF at all and they are very costly. I thought Verizon did the same thing being its CDMA LTE.

Considering the phone worked fine after sitting overnight......then I have to agree with you. It was some network config issue, and not related to my phone.

I'm guessing that my call to voice mail earlier in the day was in another cell area, and somehow it didn't "release" my phone's ID from the tower. When trying to call from home, the network saw my phone attached to another tower and tried to connect there with no luck. After so many hours, the system refreshed and all was fine.

That's all a guess on my part of course, but makes sense for what I know with the system.

As for the SIM card not having anything to do, I suggest you remove the SIM card from your phone and try to make a call. Even though the SIM doesn't directly have anything to do with CDMA, without the card, the phone won't work.
