DROID Update "broke" my phone!

So last night at 12:30am I got a message on my phone that an update was available.

Since I knew some updates were rolling out, I went ahead and accepted and agreed to the "you can't make call during... etc..." warnings and let the phone do it thing.

Once it downloaded, it started to unpack/install the update, so I went to bed.... I woke up this morning and my phone just keeps cycling between the "DROID" screen and the Red Eye... no buttons will work, and it won't continue to the desktop! WTF?!!!!!!

I know how to factory reset the phone... but I don't want to lose all my contacts! Thanks a lot Verizon!!!!

I guess I'll go to the Verizon store after work today and see if they can fix it.... unless anyone on here knows how..?

This gets me into the recovery menu:
1. remove battery
2. put battery back
3. hold x and power button
4. hold volume up and tap camera button (a couple times)

One of the options in this menu is 'apply sdcard::update.zip', but when I select it, I get the 'No such file or directory' message.

Seems like my sdcard got hosed mid-install.
Wonder if there's a way to get the update.zip file back onto my sdcard.

EDIT: after factory wipe on my phone all my data is still here except apps. everything backed up in my back up assistant i believe. not as mad now XD
That's good to know. But there's a Verizon Wireless store not to far from where I am that will be opening in the next ten minutes. I might as well take it in there and see if they can fix the problem without deleting all my apps.

Ok, yeah. I'd rather not deal with Verizon support either.

Factory booted the phone and all my pictures and stuff are still here. A few apps survived. Astro File Manager and a Bender sound board and a few games. Strange. So far everything else works fine.

What about contacts? I've got a ton of work contacts, friends, etc... that aren't backed up through the verizon website, or are not listed with my google account.... will I lose them?

I'd love to skip a trip to store once I get out of work... I can always re-download apps.... I just care about my contacts.

Anyone know for sure before I factory reset?

Quoting myself to ask again? I'm out of work at 2... but with my wife and son in tow this afternoon... I want to avoid a 2year olds meltdown as I drag him into the store! lol

My contacts are backed up on Google. You have contacts that aren't? I had my phone set to sync my settings to google -- My bookmarks are still in the browser and Aldiko ebook reader not only remembers my books, but what page I was on -- so if you have a local contact list, I don't know what'll happen to them.

Gotcha.... I do have it "synced" to google... but not all of my contacts are under that account... some were under my work email.. is that what controls it?

Does it store contacts to your SD card? What if I pull that out, then reset? hmmmmmmm.....
