Just did the X10 software update and was hoping for a few improvements...

Firstly, it tells you to back-up the phones content before updating or you will lose them. Well, when you go to the Sony website and search for "backup user data", it helpfully returns a statement that "The X10 does no thave this feature"!!!! Well thanks a bunch!

Anyway, I did the update in the hope that they'd resolved the very lo volume during phone calls and notifications. Nope.

Truly think this phone is a crock of crap. I've always loved Sony products, but I'm sorry; this phone is too poor in too many key areas.

Anyway, any help in soothing my nerves appreciated! ;)

Out of curiosity while I wait for delivery of mine. What other areas do you think the phone is poor?

Hi! Don't want to put you off and hope that the X10 problems / gripes I have are not important to you. However, now you ask..........

In order of priority;

1) Just not loud enough! Missed another text message when I was out earlier. Notifications are not loud enough and neither is the sound when in a voice call. When you start from "silent" and start upping the notification volume with the rocker switch on the side, even in a quiet room, I'd say the first 50% of volume range is pointless! Even at max volume; if there's even a little background noise around you; forget it! Interestingly, I think the volume when playing media is a bit better.

2) Keyboard sucks. It's soooooooo slooooooooooow at responding to touches; major lag! Also, it doesn't have the "long press" option to bring up symbols (such as numbers etc.). However, installing a 3rd party keyboard improves things, but really shouldn't have to!

3) Missing the track ball / track pad as an alternative to prodding the screen. Despite it being 4" in size, it's still a bit hit and miss. I#'ll accept that this is personal preference though, as millions of iPhone users can't be wrong! lol

4) Camera has a photo light, not a flash. So, when you go to take a photo, you have to press the menu button, then the "advanced settings" button, then "photo light", then "on", then "back key"....... Come on! What I was going to take a photo off will have withered and died by then!

5) Screen get's incredibly smeared very quickly. Worse than my old HTC Hero.

That'll do for now.............

I don't want to put people off. I was aware of some of the issues of course before I went ahead and bought the phone (i.e. no multi-touch etc.). However, some points I have since discovered are just inexcusable. Especially the poor spaeker / volume output. For me, just on that point alone, this phone is not "fit for purpose". :(

My experience with backup capabilities on any OS (be it desktop or mobile) is that those built into the OS suck, if they exist at all.

Not sure about Android, but on WinMo I found Sprite Backup to be a great backup solution that includes an "upgrade" mode that restores your settings and personal files after firmware updates. I know they have an Android version, so it may be worth looking at for the future.

As for your issues with the X10, I'm sorry to hear that it's not meeting your expectations. As kersey asked, and other specifics about your issues with the phone?

Cheers for the tip. I did have a "back-up" third party piece of software on the Hero, so may try that again (actually; too late as I've done the firmware update already, so will just reload everything!).

Regarding the keyboard, I've just tried to search for something on Market, and here's a specific beef I have: I'm typing in "world cup" then press on the "search" button next to the text field to start the search. However, this does nothing. Reason is that you have to press the "return" key on the keyboard to 'complete' the input. Why? Never had to on the Hero! Silly.........

i just isntalled the htc keyboard and its pretty good. you can type a lot faster and the auto correction works really well. it seems like the stock keyboard doesn't replace the works as well and it seems a LOT slower.

also i noticed that in landscape the keyboard doesn't fill the screen fully from left to right. do you get that same problem dem?

Sorry but this is mostly idiotic, childish bitching. about non-issues + few billion flies cannot be wrong so you must be eating shit on daily basis...

Ha ha! That is so funny! Well done. Everyone on here can now see how mature you are and really respect your input. You must be very pleased with stringing together half a sentence.

Hi, strange problem you found. Just checked and stock keyboard fills screen in portrait and landscape on mine. "Better keyboard" I installed from market also fine.

Thanks Dem for the heads up on the issues you have...I think the ring tone volume will be a biggie for me too, plus the poor sound from the speaker that people have mentioned.
It seems that the HTC Desire is suffering from low volume too as there are a number of people on XDA forum complaining so it seems that handset isn't perfect either.

Hopefully there will be a hack to increase the ring tone volume soon but I think I will stick with my pre-order of the X10 as there's still something about it that puts it ahead of my desire for the Desire :p

Pleasure! I'm in the same boat as you; no matter what my head was saying abot the X10, I just wanted one! Didn't like my Hero at first, but eventually warmed to it, but the poor camera performance and lack of flash finished it off for me.

I really hope there is a firmware fix on the X10 at least for the volume, but worst case, it is a hardware problem that we can't do anything about. Fingers crossed! :)

Didn't know the Desire had similar issues too! :(

Sorry to hear that all of you guys are having problems/not enjoying your X10. I'm glad to hear feedback on it though, as this was the phone I had my mind set on- Guess I'm moving away from wanting this phone (If it ever gets released in the U.S.) and will start looking at the HTC Evo4G. Thanks for your honest feedback on the phone.

Hi,

Would love an HTC Evo, but I'm in the UK and no idea if it will be sold here.

Don't forget that the problems I have with the phone might not be a problem for everyone.

The phone does have it's issues. I've had one since Thursday and the issues are noticeable and annoying. Of the 5 points raised by Dem I've experienced 4 of them (1,2,4 and 5). The other issue I've experienced is neither of my banks internet banking sites work with the stock browser though they do work with opera mini 5 so I can work round that

That's not to say the issues won't get ironed out by software updates in the future. SE are clearly aware of the keyboard issue (which is the biggest issue for me) as they had commented on it on some video review sites I looked at before deciding to purchase the phone

Despite the issues, I do like the handset and it's a refreshing change after having had an iPhone 3G/3GS for best part of two years

Hi all, this is my first post so go easy on me :)
I picked up my new X10 (UK) this weekend and have had a few days to play with it so thought I'd share my first impressions.
This is my 1st Android (or any) smartphone. Previous phone was K850 > W800, so Ive always been an SE fan.
Overall I've been impressed with stability as its not crashed once since I got it. The build quality seems nice and is very responsive.
Only big issue I've had is getting my old contacts copied from the SIM to the X10 and getting them in order. I ended up having to upload and sync all contacts with GMail, sort/merge/update there then activate the GMail sync. It all worked fine but was very time consuming.
The picture quality looks a bit 'bleeched' bit like the K850 with an overexposed hue to everything, but its still apperently miles better than the HTC pic quality.
The size is nice too. I managed to get a comaprison to the HTC Legend in the shop and for getting a much bigger (better?) screen there is only a few mm size difference. Ive installed a few new apps from the Market and the installation was very intuative and fault free.
The call volume is a bit low and ive not used it outside yet so cant comment.
So far im pleased that everything just seems to work and its just a matter of familiarising myself with it.
Hope this is useful.

lots of people are reporting the SE keyboard keeps missing touches/hanging.

apparently if you change the input method it solves the problem. i have a question for the guys who installed the HTC input method, does it work well? is it "fully compatible" or does it behave funny in any way because its not designed for a non HTC handset?

thanks in advance- i'm getting my X10 on weds :)

Welcome!

You are right about the phone quality and stability; can't fault it!
