Help Random Resets and SHut Downs w/ Jelly Bean

I've seen other threads on the topic, but the root cause isn't the case for me. I had never had any resets or shut downs with either version of ICS(phone has been totally stock since purchase btw). But since day one of the Jelly Bean update, I've been having at least one shut down a day, and also a few random resets that I wouldn't even have notice happened if it weren't for me being OCD and checking my phone every few minutes and noticing the load screen is up.

My shut downs have nothing to do with a lose battery, it's happened with both my extended battery and the stock battery, both with applicable battery doors, and I tried using some shims to make sure both were quite secure. It's still happening, and it's pissing me off.

I've also tried a factory reset, no dice.

Any Ideas? Has Google or Verizon address this at all?

Yeah, it's 9:30 and it's already reset twice, its driving me nuts. Funny thing is I figured everyone was crazy talking about instability in ICS, as far as I know I didn't have one single restart or shut down with ICS. Not I have Jelly Bean, my browser is ridiculously slow, the keyboard seems noticeably laggy, and now it won;t stop restarting. Good times, I want ICS back.

I just wanted to confirm that I'm having the exact same issues since the update a week or so ago. I've had the phone since the 1st morning it was released and have never had these issues.

The other problem besides random restarts is that it will also just go completely unresponsive and I have to take the battery out to restart it and then the restarts are taking FOREVER (sometimes 5 minutes or longer). So I will be doing a factory reset soon and hope that helps.

I don't understand why people who are having repeated problems with their phones choose not to call/go to Verizon (or whoever) and get it replaced. These devices are still under mfg warranty. Your carrier (assuming that's where you got it) will make you try a factory reset, but if you've already done that and still have problems, you need a new phone. This is NOT a Jelly Bean problem.

This issue does relate to Jelly Bean. My phone has this issue but not nearly as often as when it first upgraded to JB.

However, call Verizon people.

So I did a reset the other day and have not had a single issue since then. It hasn't turned off or restarted and when it does start up it's super fast.

Two of the apps that I did not reinstall are Avast Antivirus and the Weather Channel app. Maybe we can figure out the culprit if it is indeed a buggy app. My guess is Avast. Anyone else with the problems using that app?

I never had issues with it, but antivirus can get finicky. If all else fails and anyone else has this problem and you want to fix it manually, you can always flash the JRO03O factory image from Google manually, which requires a bit of bootloader unlock, firmware flashing through fastboot, then bootloader relock, but could help a lot. Google has been working out these issues, I've heard of a lot of radio issues for the i515. I guess I'm lucky with the i9250 over here.

I had occasional random reboots under ICS, assuming it was due to stuff I had on my phone (Galaxy Nexus) as opposed to a problem with the phone.

Since going to Jelly Bean (actually CM10) I still get occasional crashes. I figure that is the price to pay of all the programs I have running (unless I can narrow it down to a specific one).

The difference is that previously under ICS the phone would reboot, and would then be back up and running with minimal risk of missed calls. Since changing to Jelly Bean, instead of rebooting I occasionally find the phone is off (with battery having a charge).

Obviously I would prefer to have no issues with resets or shut downs, but if these are going to happen I would much prefer that the phone resets rather than being off and totally missing all calls. Any way to make it reboot like it used to as opposed to shutting down?

Man, starting this morning I can't even make or receive a call. 4 rings into a placed call and the phone resets. Incoming calls cause a lockup.

Not rooted...plain old stock JB on VZW.

I've removed recently updated apps with no success, so a factory reset is in my future.

What's the easiest way to back up settings and stuff? I'll offload my photos to my PC, but I hate having to set up everything else.

What build # are you running? The latest factory image available is version JRO03O. Installing from a Google Factory Image isn't rooting, it's a full reflash after which you can relock the bootloader again. If a factory reset doesn't fix the problem, you should load a Factory Image onto the phone (ready downloadable from Google). If it comes to that, feel free to PM me.

because you end up with a refurb device

I always think this is a funny reason.... as if a working refurb is somehow worse than a non-working original?

Or the "refurb isn't new, my phone was new".... as if your phone a year later is somehow still new? Refurbs are almost always physically better than what you have.

I get it, I had horrible luck with refurbs on my motorola droid..... took me 5 replacements to get a good one....which I dropped in less than a week and scratched up. Nevertheless, I ended up with a like-new phone that actually worked, as opposed to my used original droid which didn't work.

Working Refurb > broken original
