I have had my Galaxy Note 10.1 for about 4 weeks now and really enjoying it. I ordered a USB Adaptor with the intention of using my 64GB USB Stick with it.
I used to use this with a cheap Chinese android tablet(Zenithink) and had no problems with it. When I put it into the Note it was not recognised, I placed the stick into my PC only to find that it is formatted to NTFS (apparently not compatible with the note)

Now here is my situation, I formatted the stick to exFAT using W7 on a laptop, all my videos are on a XP PC, now the PC says the stick needs formatting so cannot copy and paste them to the stick.
I am now assuming that I will have to first copy the videos to the laptop then to the USB stick, and hopefully the Note will find and play them.
Or do any of you guys out there know of an easier solution.
Sorry it's long winded but wanted you to know the full situation.
Cheers peoples

When you connect it, do you press the USB icon thinking it will access the stick? Don't do that as that action unmounts the stick. Just plug the stick in and go directly to the media app or file manager. Only press the USB icon when you are finished and want to safely disconnect the drive.

I've made that mistake when I used my 500GB external drive. I thought pressing the icon brings up the file manager. Quickly learned it doesn't and acts as the eject button for the drive.

Hi mate
When I plug in the use adaptor I get the message"use connector connected" I then plug the st7ck into it, something flashes up very quickly then the message " usb storage safely removed"
I don't get the option to press use icon as you suggested or go to file explorer. If I go to settings> storage and scroll down to the bottom it says" usb otg safely removed"
I am not understanding this at all

That's odd. I have no issues with exFAT. I have used a 1GB USB stick, 16GB microSD and 500GB external HDD. All work fine (okay the external HDD needs an external power source connected to have it work). I'm also using Samsung's USB connection kit.

Have you tried FAT32? Check and see if that format is recognized by the Note 10.1? If it is, then it maybe a firmware issue. If it's not recognized, there could be a problem with the USB OTG cable you are using.

Sorry I can't be of further help.

I have a 64GB microSDXC card formatted exFAT and it works flawlessly in the Note and Win7. Is yours SDXC? What brand is it?

You can copy, over the network, from your XP machine directly to the SD card using your Win7 machine.

Be sure to plug the SD card into the adapter first, then plug the adapter into the PC.

Windows will not format FAT32 > 32GB; you'll need a third-party utility to accomplish that.

He is using a USB stick; not SDXC and having issues with the Note 10.1 not recognizing exFAT on the USB stick. He mentions FAT32 working, but not exFAT. That can only mean that the firmware on his Note 10.1 may be dated and does not have the driver needed to read the exFAT format.

This is spot on as my Note 10.1 with the latest firmware works fine with exFAT USB sticks.

Any reason plugging the Note into a PC and copying the files that way won't work?
I transfer files frequently between things. And they can be huge file transfers. I use my 500GB external HDD for this since it can sustain around 20+MB/s consistent transfer speeds. I can't get that consistent speed with data cable or USB key. And the HDD is a 2.5" in an enclosure. It's roughly the size of the Note 5.3 (but thicker); so pretty portable.

I see.

Plug the stick into the adapter before plugging the adapter into the Note.

I would also try formatting it FAT32 to see if it works; if it does, you can eliminate a hardware issue.

It is not possible to format a 64gb usb stick to any other than NTFS on an XP pc
Options on a win7 pc are NTFS or exFAT
And for some unknown reason my note does not recognise exfat, so it would be pointless putting files on via the pc as the the note would not accept it.
So still trying to find a solution.
Thanks to all that have taken time to help/reply

I have ordered a 32gb stick from eBay just waiting for it to arrive . So giving up on 64gb stick, will use for other things. But would just like to say a big thanks for all contributions.

Sorry it didn't work out for you. I initially had the 500GB HDD formatted to FAT32 using Minitool Partition Wizard. Since it was mainly stored with movies, I had no problems wiping it out to reformat to exFAT when I got the Note 10.1. The unfortunate thing is that not all devices recognize exFAT. My Note 5.3 will not see the drive now. It's a firmware issue as it can recognize my 500GB HDD when it was FAT32.

Did you check software update in the Note 10.1 to see if there is an update available?

Yes mate went to about device clicked software update , and it said none available.
I have yet to try the two portable hdd I have a 60gb and 500gb they don't have external power supplies and I would want them to be able to use without the need to find a plug socket.

Not sure if it'll work or not. I'm currently using a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB HDD in an eSATA/USB2.0 enclosure. It's a 2.5" 7200rpm drive and it requires external power to be recognized with the Note 10.1. I also plugged an old IDE 30GB HDD in an enclosure and that isn't recognized either. It gives a high powered device warning in both cases.

- I used Paragon Partition Manager to format 64GB SD card FAT32; it works perfectly (TWRP doesn't recognise exFAT, so I had to change it to FAT32)

- I doubt the Note will power your HDD (and if it did, it would kill your Note's battery)

- My class 10/uhs1 SD card benches at 20MB/s through two USB hubs (it should be 30MB/s...extra hubs may have slowed it down); unless you have a slow flash drive, I can't see why a mechanical drive would outperform a flash drive on the same interface

I'm not sure I understand the actual requirements correctly: how much data are you needing to store and transfer between the note and PC(s)?
