Root if I buy a magic, and upgrade to hero rom, is it pretty much a hero?

I compared the hardware from the hero to the magic and they are almost exactly the same besides camera, 3.5 audio jack, battery (maybe one or two more things)

so if I upgrade to the ROM for hero to the magic, will it pretty much be a hero?

The reason I don't buy a hero is that I am on att and I don't see leaving them since all my family friends have them and mobile to mobile is great. And I won't be able to unlock the sprint hero or the uk hero and get 3g. And I REALLY want an android phone on par with my iphone. I do no necessarily want to downgrade. I am tired of the same old boring iphone, no multi-tasking. This is what caught my eye on the android and being able to customize it and have multi-tasking.

So please help me decide. I love android and I don't even have it. I just need to find a good piece of hardware to run it on well.

Thanks!

yes, it is pretty much a hero besides the main differences you listed. the problem is that right now none of the hero roms for the magic are 100% functional. this means that bluetooth does not work and there seems to be a timestamp issue with sms and some roms dont have the leds flashing correctly. other than that, the roms work really well and are very stable and pretty fast, too. i keep flashing my magic with roms from xda-developers.com but i keep flashing back as i need to use a bluetooth headset while driving as i spend a lot of time behind the wheel and i am on the phone for work all day, plus i get many sms messages each day and i need them to be in the correct order (using chompsms is a workaround). if it were not for these issues i would be using a hero rom right now. htc is supposed to be releasing the hero rom officially for some of the magics in october, so if that happens i will be a very happy camper

Hello: This is my first post, so please excuse the basicness.
I have a Rogers HTC Magic, and I am interested in turning it into the Hero.
I am somewhat cofused by all the ROM's out there. Can you reccommend one that has the most functionality?
Do all the basics (WiFi, Bluetooth, SMS...) work?

hi,

none of them are currently fully functional. most of them work really well, are stable and fast, but they all have issues with bluetooth, the flashing leds dont work 100% and sms messages seem to have an issue showing the correct time (messages i receive show 4hrs back so threaded sms are not in order). if you dont use bluetooth then you can download an app called chompsms (free) from the market as it will show you your sms in the proper order. i NEED bluetooth and i get and give quotes to customers via sms so that has to be in order too, otherwise i would be using a hero rom too.

the first hero rom i used was this one, [Update 6-07]HTC Hero ROM for Magic by Fatal1ty - xda-developers , and it worked great. it hasnt been updated in a while, but it worked really well for me.

i have read that this one, [ROM][32A][Sep16] MyHero 1.1.1, HTC kernel 2.6.27 and kernel 2.6.29 with BFS - xda-developers , works well and i have tried this one for a day and it seemed good.

i had no issues flashing to either of these roms. you should do a nandroid backup first, then wipe your device, then flash to a new rom. if you dont like it or have issues you can use your nandroid backup to go back to normal.

htc has said that they will release hero for existing magics in october, so you can get the real thing in the next month or so if all goes well.

good luck
