Root Problem getting device indentifier token

So while going through the steps on "Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo V 4G ROMs/Kernels using fastboot" I get stuck on step 4. When I put fastboot oem get_identifier_token into the command window and press enter, it says waiting for device, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Do you have usb debugging enabled on your phone?

Yea, it's enabled

Have you also unchecked the fastboot option in settings>power

Is your phone booted up when you are doing this or is it in fastboot mode?

Like if you were booted up normally and plugged in your phone you would type:
adb reboot bootloader

Then you should see on the screen "fastboot usb" in red letters. From there you would type your:
fastboot oem get_identifier_token

I realize you are likely following the correct steps, but just want to make sure nothing was overlooked. The only time I have seen it say <waiting for device> is when fastboot commands are used while the phone isn't in fastboot.

That is definitely the problem! Are all the drivers set up and working properly? Even if I get into the fastboot menu with volume down+power and then choose fastboot the phone will just say fastboot. Then if I plug it in, it will switch to fastboot usb. Not sure exactly why it's not reading the usb but that is definitely the problem, it isn't seeing your device. By chance are you on usb 3.0 or 2.0?

I'm pretty sure I have the right drivers. I have no problems with htc sync recognizing my phone or whatever. And when the fastboot is up, when I press the volume down button, the highlighted fastboot changes to fastboot usb but still says waiting on device in command prompt. I've been using 2.0

this is one reason i always have folks enter fastboot devices prior to running any other commands,as it will tell you if your device is present or not . sounds like you have some sort of driver or interfearance issue from another program.

for starters,i recomend these drivers from revolutionary: http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe

simply download and run the .exe file

them make 100% sure that you have every program capable of comunications with the phone temprarily disabled/uninstalled. this incudes htc sync,pda net,easy tether,even itunes has been known to cause prollems.

ive learned the hard wayeek that not all usb cables are created equal,so try different cables,different ports,and make sure youre not using usb 3.0 on the pc or for accessories.

if youre still having trouble after that,you can plug in the phone in fastboot,open device manager and find the phone. right click on it,then manually update the drivers,pointing the wizrd to the extracted driver file that you downloaded above. if the wizard indicates your drivers are up to date,then you may try with a different PCor laptop. unfortunately,some folks do not seem to be able to track down the program/s that are causing the prollem with connectivity,and find the only way they can get adb/fastboot to work is to switch to an entirely different machine,preferably one that has not had ANY phone related things on it

Thank you! I actually just did it on a different computer..but now I'm stuck with the recovery.img thing. When I download recovery-twrp-shooter-1.1.1.img it says it's not a valid archive and says to download it again, which I have. And even trying to put it in the correct folder and typing fastboot flash recovery recovery.img into the cmd prompt it says that it cannot load it. Any suggestions?
