No Copy Protected Apps

Well, I upgraded from a Hero to the Desire yesterday. It's all great apart from a few niggles, but one big one in particular.....I've lost half of my paid for apps :(

I signed it to my Google account upon setting up the phone as normal. Everything seemed to work: Contacts and Calendar synchronised just fine, not so the Apps.

The market seemed to recognise half of my paid apps, allowing me to download them for free again, but not the other half. I even did an App resore from my Hero using 'Mybackup' all to no avail. I'm still missing paid apps. They aren't even showing up in the Market any more, and if I download the free version and then try to upgrade it says there's no such App.

Current paid for Apps that I'm missing and can't get back are:

Weatherbug Elite
MyBackup Pro
Documents to go Full version

Now I'm aware that there are some Market mismatches between Android 1.5 and 2.1 but I was under the impression that it was the 1.5 version that was missing out on Apps, not the other way round :(

I'm posting this in both the Desire and Hero forums just to give people a potential 'heads up' in case they're in the same situation as me, or maybe someone will be able to tell me why half my paid for apps have gone after upgrading to 2.1

I've e-mailed the developers, so will wait to hear back.

Ok, I came here just now specifially about this. It isn't paid apps, it is copy protected apps we cannot see (please change your title).

Now once again this is typical behaviour when a new phone/ROM comes out for an android device, and its [insert expletive] annoying. The only thing we can do is wait until google authorise our devices to pick up paid apps.

Well not the only thing, we can also hit htc and our providers with calls and emails constantly until they fix it.

In the meantime contact the app creator directly, showing some sort of proof you have a paid for an app and they may send you the apk.

Hang on a minute, I've just read this bit again. I do get half of my paid Apps, just not the other half.

Are you saying that some paid Apps are copy protected and some aren't?

Sorry, just want to get this straight in my head as to what's exactly going on.

Lol, unfortunately its not really mybackups fault, no non-rooted app can backup copy protected apps, thats basically why they are copy protected.

Yeah, sounds about right. So what MyBackup effectively does is backup stuff that you can redownload and/or resync again for free anyway......The word pointless is somehow stuck in my head :)

Yeah thats right, the ability to copy protect apps is at teh developers discretion. You will also find some free apps that are copy protected i think.

Well its good if you have lots of apps, much easier to re-apply a backup than searching/downloading apps individually.

Might be a silly question, but if a paid for application (specifically in my case Ringo Pro) is no longer visible in Market, but still on your previous phone, does that mean it will not appear in your downloads, even when your new phone model is eventually 'recognised'?

It will appear once we can see them yeah, regardless if its on your other phone, as long as your using the same gmail account.

Thanks! I am using the same gmail account. So, even if I can no longer find Ringo Pro in the market (including searching Market with my HTC Hero, where the software was originally purchased / downloaded), it should still appear for download on my X10?

Thanks again!

Depends on the reason why you can't see it on your Hero. If it is because they upgraded it to only work with a later version of android yes, but not if they took it off the market.

OK; thanks! I'm guessing that they just took it off the market then! Shame, as the Pro version was excellent (Lite version still available but with reduced functionality).

Wow, I got a sticky thread :)

I would advise anyone having this issue to contact the maker of the App. If you still have the receipt e-mail from Google checkout then there's a link to contact the developer.

I've already managed to get one of my paid apps back by being sent a download link from the developer, and I'm still awaiting reply from a couple of others.

Are you sure? I'm bascially 99.9% certain its only copy protected apps.

I'm sure thats not the issue, because google wants to get android on as many phones as possible. They created the N1 as a tool, to show what can be done with android. They aren't in the mobile phone business, they are in the advertising business, the more android phones the better as far as they are concerned.

I take your point re google.

One that does appear in market is 'google search by voice' on magic v 1.6

i had this backed up as it wasn't copy righted and i downloaded it to desire. it wont work though anyway! so maybe that has been removed from desire market for other reasons. i have got around that issue though.

on another forum the speculation is that google has to 'authorise' apps in some way before they can show for new phones, not sure on that theory tho.

Yeah, I have that backed up too, but it does work on my Desire! Try downloading my version, maybe they are different Add Voice Search To HTC Phones Nimbu.

That doesn't show up on the Hero market either, I assumed it it was completely removed from the market. Check my first post in this thread. Google need to authorise the Desire to be able to see copy protected apps, and until they do this we won't have access. I'm hoping it will be done sometime this week, but I'm not betting my house on it :(
