Help HTC Desire issues list?

Hi,

I am interested in getting a Desire, but have been reading a number of reviews form so called 'experts' on this phone and the Nexus One and have generated the following list of faults/bugs/problems/issues with the phones that I'm concerned about.

1. Diagonally drawn lines displaying as steps. (when compared to an iPhone)

2. Multi-touch inverting 'touch points' (Can't find Desire video now; here's a nexus one version showing same symptoms: Google’s Nexus One touchscreen tested Akihabara News)
3. Poor screen in direct sun light

I am unsure if these are phone faults by HTC or Android bugs and cannot seem to find anywhere with a definitive answer or similar list of these issues.

Sorry if i have posted this in the wrong section... but choosing a new phone is a big decision for me so need to be well informed on what I'm buying.

Had my desire for a few days now. Can't say I've noticed the diagonal problem. No problem with multitouch either. As for the sunlight, yes in direct sunlight its hard to see but thats also the case with iPhone. I'm sure there is a screen protector out there to reduce this.

Number 1 is a non issue. I don't rate that test whatsoever. Th touch screen is extremely responsive and accurate. You will have no issues at all with it.

2: There haven't been any reports of issues like that on the desire, I certainly haven't come across it and I've been using my phone extensively (to say the least) since I got it.

3: Apparently AMOLED screens have poor quality in daylight, if they do I don't get it. I wonder if the Desire has had something special done to it, as it was sunny yesterday and the screen was clear as anything. Maybe my eyesight is too good, would be interesting to hear from others about this though.

Thank you for your replies... so if you have the phone and you do the multi touch rotation test shown in that video, yours draws a complete circle? (touch the screen in two places, then rotate the phone more than 90degrees about the centre axis)

I too have had my Desire a few days, and I also have no issues at all with the touchscreen on it. The screen is responsive and accurate. I highly recommend the Desire, it is a fantastic phone.

Seems to be the same as what happens in the video. However I really can't see when this would cause a problem.. I'd guess it will probably be fixed too.

It effects the Desire & N1... so... is it an HTC software issue?, an Android issue?, a screen issue? or the application issue?

Why can't I find an official word on this? Damn my googling skills! lol

To me, it seems fairly important; if they're going to advertise multi-touch, for it actually do multi-touch... if it's a software issue or Android issue, fair enough, one day there'll be a fix; but if it's a hardware problem shouldn't they recall the devices?

True, but I can't see where you would even notice it in normal use. Perhaps with gaming, but there are no games to my knowledge that would be affected by that. It certainly doesn't affect pinch zoom or anything like that.

I'd be interested to know if it is a software/hardware problem though. First glance it seems like software to me which leads to the hope they will fix it OTA. Might be a good idea to let HTC know about it in any case.

3 is more of a AMOLED issue than a desire issue. In turn for vibrant colours and lower battery consumption you have to live with the lesser visibility in the sun. (wich is a pretty good deal to be fair)

Now that being said, it's not like other phones are very readable in the sun. Unless you put the brightness way up.

Edit: The touchscreen issue is most likely a driver issue and in the worst case a hardware issue.

It would help if the phones in post 1 actually showed the same picture.

Not 1 of the tests is using the same pic, and the N1 pic looks like it's been drawn by an iphone fanboi's 3yr old.

I was in outside the other day and in strong sunlight I found it extremely hard to see the screen....i'm comparing this to the BlackBerry Curve 8900 which was my last phone.

The stepping artefacts is an issue of the phone it seems... it's a shame for sure as i want this phone... it's just i also want it to work properly

After watching the CNC video, like the guy says; it's about tuning the phone to the hardware... so maybe a software fix will sort it eventually.

If this is really a problem in "real life" situation or "daily usage", we should see lots of complaints from N1, HTC Desire, Droid users.

(2) Again, don't worry too much. In what daily usage circumstances you will need that? As other previous poster explain, you wont face this on real life daily usage.

(3) This is your valid concern. AMOLED is not that good outdoor. So, if you are spending a lot of time outdoor, then AMOLED screen might not be for you. This is not a defect, but just the way AMOLED is.

I know, you want a "perfect" device ... but, there is no such thing like that

Exactly, its such a non-issue with actually using the phone, unless you are using it to create a work of art or something.


JustBiteMe2k I appreciate you want a phone that works, but this 'issue' doesn't stop the phone from working at all. Might be good for you if you can, to go into a store and try the out yourself? At least then you have the first hand experience. And its in pretty much every shop now!

Ok, here I am a newbie to this forum and a newbie to android as well.

I purchased a t-mobile HTC Desire phone and for some strange reason, t-mobile sent me 2 phones today. I opened one of them and faced an issue with Speaker phone calls. 2 things to note here -
1. Speaker phone voice sounded cracked and low (compared to symbian phones which I have used till date)
2. If the person whom you were dialing was in the same room and on speaker phone (irrespective of model/make since I tried with nokia/sony ericsson/samsung) and you too were on the speaker phone, then there is a shrill and continuous echo which you can hear but the same fades out once you/other person moves out of the room.

I called up tmobile and informed them about this and they in turn told me to try and use the other new HTC Desire phone. To my surprise, the above 2 issues were also seen on the 2nd piece.

Too much of an co-incidence????

Did anybody else face a similar problem? Any insights would be appreciated, please.

Feedback. The solution is as follows: Don't talk to a person in the same room on speakerphone.

It's when the microphone picks up the sound from a speaker, and creates an endless loop.

Im new here so please excuse the possibility that ive overlooked something... however, Ive had a blackberry 8900 for almost 2 years and not only is the viewing angle on the screen TERRIBLE but its extremely difficult to see in sunlight, in fact it's hard enough to see some of the images indoors let alone outdoors. Ive tried the HTC Desire and to be honest the screen seems so much better, I dont even think theres any comparison! Just my opinion...

Check: Settings -> Call settings ... -> Keep screen awake [ ]

The screen turning off is built into android.

This app will allow you to avoid it when removing the phone from the ear:
Screebl Lite - Save Power! - Cyrket

Edit: Or do as Gogol says, had no idea that could be done by regular settings.

I would still suggest checking out the app, it is very useful.

You can change sms notification sound by going:
Settings - Sound & display - Notification sound.

When on a call, put your hand over the earpiece. It is this that makes teh screen go off when you hold it to your ear.

I don't have a "Keep screen awake" setting ?

I do have a screen timeout under Settings > Sound & display.
