Wireless charging

Hey all, so firstly for those who do not know....the Galaxy Note 2 has 4 extra pins visible to you if you take the back cover off. You wil see that two of these pins make contact with the back cover (this is for NFC) and for the other two near the battery...these are available for wireless induction charging.

The question I have is... does anyone know when the special back covers with the induction coils built in are going to be released? along with the mat needed? I quiet fancy charging my Note 2 wirelessly instead of having to plug it in, especially if it is true that it can charge over a distance of a few feet.

The Note 2 charges so slowly on the USB 3.0 port of my PC (about 1% in 20 minutes) that USB charging is no longer really possible. I can't see how wireless charging will work either?

I think Samsung are being as clear as mud about the whole wireless chargin thing. It was meant to be released in Sept. Something tells me that there has been a f**k up at Samsung HQ!

These induction chargers can't be, unless something has changed, used to charge devices at distance. They need to be in contact with a mat or whatever charging device there is. And based off other induction chargers I've used, they will almost always charge slower then charging through a wall outlet, possibly even slower then charging through your USB port.

That said, if an OEM wireless/induction charger becomes available, I'll probably get one just out of convenience. Otherwise, I'll probably just stick to plugging it in to charge it up.

As for back cases with these contacts built in, assuming the wireless charging thing actually in functional, it probably won't be too long before we start seeing back cases being sold either on eBay or any of the numerous chinese accessories websites there are.

Check YouTube - there are videos of the note 1 with wireless charging. And I believe they recently released these kits for the SIII.

Ive got the AT&T Note2

And all the Palm Pre Touchstone Wireless bits for the mod.

But may not be able to find time to do the mod for a few more days.
Good news, The AT&T Note2 does have the Wireless Charge pins (just like international version)
But there is a rumor the AT&T firmware may have blocked the Wireless Charge function.

I would only get it if it was a wireless car dock. I used to run my palm pre on the charging base in my car and that was super convenient. The question is can/will the induction charging keep up with the note 2 discharge rate while on nav for example.

Depending on the models, some of Galaxy Note II (GT-N7100) have the two optional charging pins on the back side of device, just right of the battery holder, that can be used for wireless charging with the modified back cover. Galaxy Note II displays the notification message built in the firmware when it is charged wirelessly. SCH-L900 doesn't have the pins. SGH-T889 has the pins, but it can't be charged with these optional charging pins.[26][27]

Never fear - I installed a touchstone mod Thursday when my Note 2 arrived on the doorstep. It worked first try and has worked without any trouble since. When on the touchstone base it even pops up a dialog saying that it is wirelessly charging. Works great in the car too. Could always be faster but that's been the case with touchstone charging on all phones - it's just exaggerated by the size of this battery.

USB charges at 500mAh. That's super slow. Modern phones charge at 2.1amps now. Always charge from an AC outlet.

(For reference the ORIGINAL Droid charged at 500maH lol.)

I've charged from the USB with previous phones including the GS2 and GS3 without issue but the GN2 is the first phone where this isn't possible. I'm sure a lot of uninformed punters will RMA the phone or post here thinking there is something wrong with it.

It's possible...you're just going to have the phone drain faster than it charges.

The bigger screen, bigger battery and higher processors draw more current.

I think he's saying that the power just to have the phone on and idle is greater than other phones, and perhaps greater than the positive charge that is provided via USB.

Your phone has a certain charging rate, (it can charge 500 via USB, that's a limitation of the charging cable, you can confirm this by going to the settings, and then battery. If it says USB you'll know.)

So 500mAh...that's roughly 3x slower a charge than on 2.1 from an AC outlet. Some phones, unless you use their specific charger can sometimes not be recognized by the phone and charge slower even on AC. (You can get around this buy purchasing cables that have the data leads on them shorted out, so it's ALWAYS recognized as an AC source, the only downside is you couldn't use that cable for USB connection to the computer.)

Anyways, the long and short of it really is that as phones have larger capacities, larger screens and consume more power, the older lower amperage charging rates may not be enough to charge the phone WHILE using. (Usually if you had things like tethering, bluetooth, wifi hotspot, video streaming or GPS on)

Charging rates between USB are the same. From what I understand only data rates changed from USB 2.0 to the 3.0 spec.

Yes, USB 3.0 is rated at 900mA as opposed to USB 2.0 at 500mA .

Ah so a very modest bump,. In a world of 2amp devices now that's still not much, we can assume AC will charge twice as fast then. (With the Note 2 that could be a difference of 2-3 hours)
