"NO ROOTING NEEDED"
Anyone wanting to know how to use your wifi hot spot on a virgin mobile kyocera rise there is a way to do that and also learn how to download apps virgin mobile doesn't want you to have so here goes <STEP 1> go to SETTINGS on your rise and select SECURITY , scroll down to UNKNOWN SOURCES Make Sure This Box Is Checked then go back to your HOME SCREEN <STEP 2> go to your BROWSER go to this web page and download and open http://download.pandaapp.com/android-app/foxfi-1.52-id6626.html remember if any app says unavailable on carrier google search and download for any source other than google play and it will work this app works great for me hope this helps please leave a feed if it does ALSO IMPORTANT you must set your phone not to sleep the hot spot turns off

Is it really worth the effort considering how slow Sprints/Virgin's 3G speeds are, and the throughput only gets worse by tethering or using it as a hotspot.

he's right. sprint towers are terrible especially if you're on virgin and your data has been throttled. tethering the wifi the legit way is still a waste of time (root style) even with a good DNS you're better off just driving your laptop to the nearest wifi spot and getting a twenty MB download speed or better.i mean if you have a technique that gives similar DL/UL speeds please say so.

Depends on how you intend to use it.
As a primary connection for other devices it is not worth it.
But as an emergency connection when power goes out locally, it is very handy.
Also great for use with a tablet on a road trip.
Actually I rooted the RISE as soon as I got it just for that reason.
It was very handy on the Optimus V I had since day one, used it many times.
