Root Error code 67 after handset update?

Over a year ago (Aug 2011) , I was using a Motorola W385 Flip Phone (is that my donor?) on the Boostmobile Network. A colleague told me I should get a rooted Sprint HTC Evo 4g phone, so I did. I purchased it from a shop and it worked fine for almost a year, when one night my phone rang and a Boost Rep said my phone was flagged for errors or something like that and at that point I couldn't make calls. After talking with him, he did something, and the phone worked again. But now, about 4 months since, Nov 13, 2012, I was taking a train into NYC, and when I got off the train I couldn't make calls or texts, and some voice recording said some error. I thought it had something to do with my reception around the buildings or something, but later when I was out of the city it was still the same. When I googled the error (from my EVO), I read several searches that said to go online to my boost acct and choose 'update handset', enter my original (again, is this the donor) purchased W385 ESN/MEID. At this point all things were working except text and talk.

So I went to my acct, and saw that my current phone was listed as SCP6760A BC, and the ESN/MEID was some number that was long but was not anywhere matching the one on my phone sticker by the battery in the EVO. What is the deal with that?

Then I looked at the sticker behind my battery on the W385 and entered MEID#, but that wouldn't let me move to next step because number wasn't long enough. I looked at the current phone activated and noticed the DEC# on the W385 was same length and similar, so I plugged that in, and then continued to activate my W385 with the DEC#.

So the W385 worked fine, EVO was deactivated, and I waited about an hour, then reversed the process, and plugged in the same MEID that was there when my EVO was working, and activated it. I got a text and email from Boost saying activation added the phone back, though they called it, again, the same BOOST SCP6760 CLAMSHELL w/serial number.

I turned on the phone, everything seemed back to normal, calls, texts, all functions, etc... except, now I can't connect to the internet unless I'm on a wifi network. And, when I turn wifi off, I get bombarded with the "Error Code 67. Unable to establish wireless data connection."

Now, I am not familiar with all this stuff, I work better by watching than I do reading up on things. Is there an easy fix? I live in California, and the place I got the phone is in Atlanta, GA, so I can't take it there.

I would really love to learn how to do this, but when I start reading up on it, there is a lot of stuff that I have no clue what anyone is talking about, and to make matters worse, I've got A.D.D., so taking the time to learn this is exactly why I'm here now. I see people being sent to All things Root, or something like that... but like I said, I just can't seem to grasp it at this point.

Again, I'm looking for either a step-by-step that is more specific to my phone; OR, should I just go to another shop and ask someone else to do it for me.

I love this whole idea of flashing and rooting, and if I could do it, I would love to give this gift to the world. I just hope that someone here can help me out and tell me what the problem is. I tried the dialpad ##MSL# thing, but nothing happened at all. I used the MSL that was listed as the current phone MSL that was my EVO 4g, and I tried a MSL program that gave me a different, all zero's, but again the dial pad just did nothing, I couldn't use it or type, except use the back/return button and then it would go back to the regular. I tried it a few times, and it just seemed like it was doing nothing, the keypad did not respond or anything (except back button), and even let it sit for about 15 min, thinking maybe it was working, but nothing.

Sorry to be so long, but I figured I'd give as much info, and really appreciate anyone taking the time to help me.

Well, the donor phone appears to be a Sanyo incognito, which is commonly used as a donor phone.
When you bought this phone, was it already flashed to Boost? And did you also get the donor phone? I am assuming not, since you did not mention it.
Now, I know very little about flashed phones and am just telling you some stuff I know.

My guess it that your Motorola Flip phone is not the donor phone, the Sanyo is.

I would also assume your Evo is rootedd if you used the MSL reader app to obtain your MSL.
And as far as the keyboard not working to use the MSL code, I would surmise, if you are rooted, that the rom you are on does not support the ability to access other areas of the phone by entering the MSL code.

Do you know what rom (name of operating system) you are on?
You can try sometimes by going to menu/settings/about phone and see what is listed there.

So do understand that, as of now, all works except your internet and data? (3g,4g)?

Thank you Mikestony! Ahh-haa, so this doesn't sound good for me then.

No, they did not give me the Sanyo phone. I also wonder why they needed my original phone then, the w385? When I came to pick up the phone he said he needed my phone, then took in the back, and came back about 20 minutes later with the w385 and the new EVO 4G.

As for the keyboard, it does work, but right after I push the # sign after the last code number, say, ##123456#, the phone just sits there, and if I touch a key it does not respond, only hitting the back button then it goes to my regular dial pad with last calls listed.

The phone is definitely rooted, I have all kinds of root software and can do things like get rid of stock apps, etc..

This is exactly what is on that page, I have no idea if what you ask is there. Is there an app I can use to get this info otherwise?

And, yes, all works perfectly except I no longer have 3G (never had 4g) internet/data.

So, what do I do now?

Should I just pay someone to redo this phone, if so can they use my w385 as the doner? I would love to do this myself, so I can do it for my friends and other folks. I am really good at PC service and repair, the phones are just a lot more software-ish, I keep hearing it's easy to learn, but I can't seem to get going on it. Do you know a "baby steps" program/way to learn it :smokingsomb:?

No worries, I just dont know alot about flashed phones, but there are at least 3 members I know of that can help you out. kolossus, new optimus and Chckycrk. Perhaps shoot one of them a p.m. to check out your thread here.

Anyhoo, it appears you are rooted but just on a stock rom. (which is fine)
As far as the entering of the msl code, it will ask you for your msl code after enter a ## code, such as ##775#. Are you trying to enter your MSL number as a ## code?
i.e..lets say your msl is 123456
it won't work when you type ##123456#

I typed this out before... it was more indepth but I lost it. Stupid computer. I'm going to give you the short and dirty version this time. Read through the whole thing once to get an idea about what you're about to do. Do not skip steps.

Find a wifi connection. Download MSL reader. Write your MSL down. Reboot into recovery and make a nandroid backup of your current setup.

Find a stock rom. Nothing fancy. Latest GB rom for the Evo. No root. Dial ##msl# on your phone. Did you get to the MDN/MSID screen? If yes go on to the next step. If no find a different rom to flash.

Edit the MDN/MSID to be 0000001234. Make them both the same. Doesn't matter what they were before. Commit modifications or something like that. Done maybe?

The phone will reboot by itself. If it didn't then you didn't do it right. Try again. When the phone comes back up it'll go into OTA activation. Let it. Do not inturrupt. If an error message comes up do not do anything. Do not hit ok. It'll go away by itself.

OTA will take about 2 minutes. After it is activated hit OK. It'll go to the next step. PRL. PRL takes longer. Like 5 minutes. Do not be impatient. If you come through the PRL update without any problems you're home free. Click OK an go on. Next it'll try to check for firmware update. Cancel that and reboot the phone.

You should now have voice, text and net access. Check. Reboot the phone and restore your nandroid backup.

Obviously you should only do this after you put the Evo back on your account. Do not use the numbers from under the battery. Use the numbers you find in Settings> About Phone.

If you have so many errors that the phone cannot OTA then my friend you're out of luck. You'll have to find someone to flash it for you. Either physically or remotely.

The ##775# was just an example of a code...it is a prl code...
I saw that I was incorrect that you could not enter your msl code as a ## code at indicated by kolosus, so I edited my last post.

Just follow the instructions provided there by kolosus and you should be good.

How do I do a backup so I get all this stuff back, and also, if I do restore, will it screw up all the stuff I am about to do? I have something called Titanium Backup Pro, and APN Backup & Restore? I also have Avast Antivirus installed, will this cause any problems in doing this process?

Okay, got the MSL Reader, and it says my MSL is 000000, is that right?

Now, where do I get this, rom, is it only one rom, what is GB rom, I'm a little, actually a lot, lost here, could you break this down for me? Also, assuming I do this right, when get to the next step to dial, is this the command keyed like this then, using my MSL:

Okay, so when I dial this, nothing happens. It's like the dialer just freezes or pauses, I can't touch any key on the dialer that will do anything. So, I let it sit, the phone screen will eventually time out, I can get it back up to dialer, but no keys respond. Then, I just hit my back button and I'm back to normal. Again, nothing on the touchpad screen responds, I just clear out of it by use of back button, then all is normal, and I go back to starting dialpad.

BTW, error code 67 can hit you on any update. I just call Sprint when it happens, tell them that I just did a factory data reset because I needed to change what I installed and they clear it for me.

Of course, many, many thanks; I really appreciate all the input/help, and your time. A few questions, again I am adventurous enough to take some risks, but I like to have some idea of what I'm doing here.

So, before I saw your response, I trying to learn more about all this and came across all these ROM choices, ex. Digital Karma ROM for HTC Evo 4G! | HTC Evo 4G Hacks! and this one sounded good to me. Here, are you specifically saying I can only do a 'stock' rom, which I assume the link I've put here is not, maybe? I also want to lean towards the tried and true more than a beta type that might be problematic.

Second, flashing, is that a software thing or does that require special hardware or cables and/or software?

And if you can, or anyone else, please understand I'm not up on the vernacular/lingo in this new adventure, so specifics might help keep me from asking more and more questions. For example, if I do need hardware or software recommendations would be awesome. I am really excited about learning this stuff, I pick things up and learn quickly, I just don't want to destroy my phone in the process

It's just the way system app are arranged, for lack of a better term.
One way you can theme the app easier than the other way.

Yeah, Boost should help you with that.

Boost uses Sprint's network. Code 67 means that the re-registration/activation failed or their random security checker stopped you (that has zero to do with root, don't even bring it up when you call). It really is no big deal.

Root is the same exact thing as getting admin access on a pc.

Recovery is your number one admin tool.

When we install something using recovery, we use the slang term, flash. Here's a flash image, I flashed it, etc etc - substitute install for flash, that's the whole deal.

o.k...lets see if you have a recovery.
Go into your bootloader like this.....pull your battery.
Wait about a minute then reinsert your battery.
While holding the volume down button, press/hold the power button.
The screen that comes up is your bootloader screen.
(while your at it, post here what is says too)
From that screen, select the recovery option and press power to select it.
Tell us what comes up

In Titanium Backup, did you back up what you wanted? User apps, texts, etc? That info will be saved to your sd card which will not be affected by rooting.

And just be sure to transfer the rom to your sd card also.

Hi, so I just got off phone with Boost tech, they told me that they would have to reset the phone, and since the phone isn't on their network as one of their phones, it will likely wipe everything and not even work. They said that the phone I have shows it's a Sanyo (like others told me) which is faking the system. Does this make sense?
