fyi, i found two ways to protect the headphone jack opening from getting dust in it... i use my zune for music and am not really into internet radio. first way, i found those little 'little tabs' they keep around offices have just a little adhesive...so putting a small piece under a silicone phone cover keeps it in place and won't leave a scotch tape mess on your phone. the next thing is what i just ordered online...called a headphone jack plug. its a little rubber plug you put int headphone jack...and i believe it was made for the iphone/ipod, but i will see if it works with the hero in a few days. it was only 5 bucks, so no biggie.

I keep mine plugged to. I think that is why I have had the success of being dirt free.

I bought mine Dec. 30th. Finally noticed some dust coming in from that bottom left corner. I took it to my Sprint store a few days ago. All they could offer to do is clean it. I left it and came back in an hour and it was really clean. I was happy. I didn't want a new phone because mine works fine. And with all the dust issues I figure that the next one will do it too. There was no cahrge to me and I can keep taking it back for a free cleaning. It is what it is and I'll only have it about another nine months. TC

just bought a used hero to tinker with and it was full of dust. This was a early release unit dated 9/29/09. I used the tutorial on this site and took the phone apart and got all the dust out of the phone. This phone is extremely easy to take apart. I am confident if anything where to ever to break that I could fix it easily.

I got the phone for 120.00 which is awesome because they are going for 250+ on ebay and even more at the store.

can simply wearing a protective cover on the phone protect it from the dust? I am considering getting the HTC Hero soon and this dust problem seems to be a re-occurring thing that im quite worried about.

I don't know if it will prevent it indefinitely...but it sure does make a big difference. Not really sure why either because the only opening it covers is the battery cover.

I only have dust in the lower left corner still. Purchased 12/09 from Best Buy (with google) I continue to carry my phone in my pocket and the dust has not accumulated. I only notice it when the screen is off. I do not have a case other then the zagg shield

I also believe that most of the dust is from carrying the phone in my pocket. Mine isn't bad at all and doesn't affect my enjoyment of the phone so I wouldn't worry about it. I will say that I am looking forward to purchasing the EVO when it comes out. Depends on cost tho.

2nd Hero. Dust. I love this phone but this issue is beginning to be quite foolish. First off, I hate going around between Best Buy, HTC, and Sprint trying to get my dust issue fixed lol I'm out of my 30 days so I am stuck with this dusty hero :( Unless I want to take a chance and pay to ship it out to HTC. But from what I heard that could make matters worse.

I went into Best Buy the other night and decided to purchase the Black Tie protection. I need something like this as my phone is VERY prone to accidental damage. (I am a clutz sometimes)

I asked the rep about the dust issue and he said that the the BTP plan with Best buy covers it and they will send the phone off to be repaired at HTC and the turn around time was 3 - 5 days. He also stated that they will give you a loaner Hero to use during that time and will set it up exactly the way the original one is.

What I am wondering is if you have a rooted Hero could you enable the security lock (pattern) and then send it in? I did not think it would be necessary that they would have to power it on. I do not feel like having to change mine back to factory default and root it all over again. Thoughts anyone?

I guess that would depend on how brave you are about keeping your warranty. I'm not sure if rooting makes a difference with voiding BTP or not. If rooting doesn't void BTP, then it doesn't matter. If it does void it (like it voids the manufacturer's warranty), then you can take the chance, but is it worth the risk?

due to confidentiality reasons if my phone is locked they can't alter it. I checked. hehehehehe.

Did not have dust before. I have my hero since day one. I got a little dust now. Should I have it exchanged????

you can since your within your 30 days. i would get the black tie protection too. your running from the inevitable though seeing as it is an issue with all of em. Best Buy told me that lint accumulates in it more when you have it in your pocket. I have had mine for over 30 days and have not had any issues, of course I carry mine in my hand everywhere I go.

I bought my w/google hero on 10/20. No dust then. No dust now. Not a single spec. And also want to add I only have one tiny 1/32" long nick on the glass. I carry my phone in my pocket all day every day without any screen protector or case and I'm not too overly protective of it. Knocking on wood as we speak to keep it that way :)

I had my Hero naked for the first month and it built up a good deal of dust in that time. Then I got the Otterbox commuter case and the dust seems to have subsided. It looks like it has the same amnount as when I put the case on it over a month ago. Now I just gotta get the courage to clean it, or find a store that will do it for me.
